well I've traying to have the opportunity to start in this bussiness I have 17 years experience on transportation all my family are truckers I took a course and I have read books about this job but I think the best way to learn and do the job well is starting with someone that already have enough experience.

Before you jump in make sure you know what your getting into. alot of these companies will teach you everything you need to know for a price.And usually you will be in the same boat you were before you started. there are other avenues. I learned a lot in this business, and contracted quite a few local business for the company to push shipper's products. But the company is small and not making enough money to pay for fuel and would like to be a agent for someone else on the side. And there is still a lot of companies that call me to help them push their product but I can not because I am not a broker. I am willing to work with a good broker that will give me free will to book a load and have a truck company haul it. I do not need to make that much money, even though I know the profit is good. This may seem like a silly question but here it goes, Is it better to get shippers lined up before I'm actually ready to do business? I won't be up and running until the end of June,and I'm not sure how I should handle this, since alot of reading stated that getting shippers is lot of work. Also, this would answer my question, Will shippers put a broker on there list of brokers,they will work with before they can use you.

No I would never think that there is only one broker in Orlando. I just haven't seen either of you and was wondering. I was trying to see if you were looking for agents or information or selling something. I live in a very small town (not many left they all became citys lol) and in this small town I can count 30 brokers or agents. I do know they won't share. So just checking to see if you have anything to share.

Basically there isn't much to share about how to do this business. Is just having the patience to make numerous calls to try to get some shipper to give you a chance. The only thing I haven't figure out is how much $$ brokers are making? I don't mind having you as an agent. I do know the basics and hoping to do our best in this business. Please reply.

I have to differ with you there is plenty to share and more to the business that making calls and getting shippers. Its a business that builds and builds as it goes. The brokers that have been in business for a long time have a lot of knowledge that a school or class will not teach. If you want to know how much money brokers make it all depends on how much knowledge they have and how long they have been doing it and how they treat their shippers and carriers. Agents get anywhere from 50-70% of the loads they bring with them. maybe 33% if they are just moving the loads that the broker gave them. Its really hard to tell as those are figures I was offered. But if you go as an agent for a new broker you may not make much as its harder for your carriers to trust you and you probably will have to pay carriers on deliverly of load. Also what do you have to offer a new agent do you provide the loading boards, training, support, how about software to manage their loads. Do you pay the agent before the shipper pays you? So that is why I frequent this forum to share information, some are selling information and some are hiring new agents. But trust me when I say there is a lot to learn and some will share. I have been getting some great tips and from great people I took a corse or two and still I learn. While I'm at it thanks Pam for all the help you have given me I learned more from you than from all my training. Well back to finding carriers. I hope you the best in the business and I hope you share. It will come back to you 10 fold.

Persistence is the key. Always try to get that opening that allows you to send out a shipper packet. That gives you a chance to call on that particular shipper again. It sounds hokey and redundant but it really does help.
