I am trying to get started as a freight agent. I need some help getting some customers.

get list of business from the chambers of commerce, library for manufacturing list, manta.com or as someone mention here about going to the waste department and get a list of companies that been fined or(and)use their services and the yellow pages and call and call and call. Oh, if any sells person call you of family for any product, maybe you call them back(windows companies, home improvements etc)

Paul, as an agent isn't the company you work for helping you to build your business? If you don't succeed they won't either. That is why a good company will really be an asset to you.
