Jerry Lassiter in Greenville, North Carolina said: Will someone please help me to get started as a freight agent. I do not have any money to go to school or classes. I live in Grimesland N.C. A while back I talked to a man here that works for Landstar and he said he would train me but everytime I tried to call him and set up a training day he just blew me off. He clames to be making lots of mad money working from home and he said it was so easy a kid could do it but will not give me the time of day now. Someone help me get started. Thanks form Grimesland N.C. Jerry, to become a broker you'll need to get an MC #, which is given by the gov't. It cost $350.00 you'll also need to get a surety bond, $10,000 is the requirement in order to get the MC#. Bonds are a little more difficult to get these days, but you may be able to get one thru your bank. You may think this is the hard part, it's the easy part. Now you must find shippers and carriers and then you have to figure out rates to move the freight. Sometimes the shippers will just tell you what they're willing to pay, which makes it so much easier to to work with then second guessing what they're willing to pay. Now you have to find the carrier and negotiate the rate. I think a person could make money from home doing a freight brokerage, but you have to find the shippers and carriers first and getting loads every week can be a trying experience. Being told "NO" fifty times out of fifty-one calls (cold-calling) can put a damper on your day. It's tough out there, but if you stick with it people will get used to you calling them, and thats what it takes, constantly calling people. Good luck to you in your venture. |

You can NOT make 3,000 to 5,000 dollars per load, even if you do know what you're doing. You're trying to take someone's money to supposedly teach them brokering. I've been in the business several years and I've never seen that type of money being made, what're you having hauled, gold? Oil? Gasoline??? |

I have thought about taking some training in becomeing a broker's agent. With the ecomony so shaky right now, would it be advisable to get into the trucking agent business? |

Sad news, but I would recommend that you do NOT go into a broker or agent field at this time. You could go ahead with the training if you wish, but do not expect to be able to use it in the next 3 to 5 months (maybe more). It is really bad in the real world, because I know first hand. Another idea would be something in the medical or construction field. Springtime in TX (I wish) |

Thank you for the advice. I was worried that things might be rough in the trucking right now. |

Is there anyone out there that is willing to allow an experienced agent to work their leads? I have no problem moving the freight when I have it, I just have had such a hard time building a customer base. I have experience in flats and steps. I work out of my home and have all needed equipment. My email address is barbeee36@yahoo.com |

I've read all your comments and found all of them to be helpful and interesting. I'm newly interested in this field and it seems that it's the best time to get involved, but ONLY for training experience. The $$$ may come in slowly and taking the time to build a great customer base will take ingenuity and a lot of creativity. I'll keep all your comments in mind. I'll test out this opportunity beginning this week. I'll remain diligent because in the long run, the monies will be lucrative and well appreciated. I'm so tired of working in the corporate world and not making a decent income. |

are you serious? Go work for a trucking company, they'll teach you everything you need to know about it. Ask to work in the dispatch department. |
