If you're considering starting a freight brokerage going to freight brokering school is not a good start. Getting an authority is the easiest part of becoming a broker it takes about 10 minutes. The hardest part is getting good financing for accounts payable it'll run you 2-5% per invoice.

You must know or have:
Must have 5+ years brokerage experience (driving isn't the same)

Must have a customer base. To make it worth while you should have at least $1 million.

You must have Good Credit. You can't get a bond without almost perfect credit.

You must know how to file a cargo claim.

You must have $20k-$50k cash for basic cost like a one time $300 authority, $1,000 annual Bond, Cargo insurance $1500 annually, general liability $850 or more, don't forget software $10,000-$100,000, phone lines $100 a month, fax line $25 monthly, and a professional website $1000-$5000. The expenses never end.

If you have any questions let me know. I know from experience.

Thanks, Mark
