Here is the least expensive way to learn this business. Offered solely in partnership with major colleges and universities, the Freight Broker Training Course teaches the practical applications of building up a freight brokerage or agency, from licensing and operations to sales and marketing. Upon successfully finishing the course, students receive a certificate of completion and are ready to join the $400 billion-plus shipping industry. Freight Brokering is currently one of the top home-based businesses as well as the largest growing sector of the transportation industry, according to Entrepreneur magazine and The Wall Street Journal. It is an ideal business for truck drivers who want to advance in the industry, entrepreneurs in search of a profitable home business and immobile and qualified military veterans, who are provided government subsidies to take the training. Brooke in Keller, Texas said: Here is the least expensive way to learn this business. Isn't it true thou that 90+% of freight brokerages that offer an agent program (unless they charge a fee to start) want people that have 1) a customer base (so that the potential agent can pay their bills and get by while they build their business) and 2) REAL EXPERIENCE. Anyone in transportation knows that the industry has enough issue, tricks of the trade, problems,... that you have to do them to know enough to handle them on your own as an agent. Not saying those schools are not a good source of information but I am amazed at the number of request I get each month asking to be an agent from a customer service, cook, truck mechanic... that just got out of one of those training seminars. to anyone who wants to be SUCESSFUL long term in the industry find a company that will train you OR work inside sales or dispatch for a truck co. or brokerage for a year gain as many carrier and shipper contacts as you can (not saying pick pocket your companies customers just keep your ear to the ground you will see a lot of people that dont move loads with them and you can build a carrier base)then if you have the capital and resources open a brokerage if not find a brokerage that has an agent program that doesnt tie you down with non-competes and has a 50%+ split and has all the software, quick pays, support... that you need to be a successful broker. |

I love all the comments and advice and talk on this site about freight brokering. I am a complete newbie and was wondering if any of you knows how I should go about registering as a broker. My brother is an auto carrier and he has a DOT; MC and TX ID. Can I use this since the agency will be his or do I need to register different to also be a broker under the same name? |

I really would like to be in a class setting instead of buying info online. There is a great school I attended prior to starting my brokerage Savon Freight (we also train people hands on when they sign up as an agent) The schools address is www.loadtraining.com. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience if you have any further questions we are always looking for good people to join. |

I have been to that site but I don't have the kind of money needed for that training. Do you think buying the CD/DVD would help than attending an actual class? |

Yes, but hands on is always better. Often times we train people who want to become an Agent for our brokerage after they attend a course or purchase a home study course. |

Hi Brett, I have a clue in freight shipping as I am currently doing dispatch for my brother. If I purchase a home study course which from the loadtraining.com site is going for $99.00 will this help me out? and then practice on the job? |

I took the hands on course prior to starting my brokerage. I don't have any real experience with the on-line versions. Give them a call directly to explore all the options or give John a call at our office and he can explain how we can train you if you choose to become an Agent. His number is 623-977-3005. |

Just to make sure we are talking the same thing - a trucking company is very different than a freight brokerage company. We train people to become agents for our freight brokerage. I would be happy to give you more information on our program if this is what you are looking for. Thanks |

Do the laws differ for brokers and agents much when operating in Canada and the US? I would like feedback on that topic. I would appreciate your expert advice. thanks |

thanks for the info. I am in the Dallas Forth Worth area. I am very familiar with international transportation into and out of Mexico; however, and only know the basic customs information as far as shipping into Canada. So can you operate as an agent or broker in the USA with

ok, ok, I bit the bullett, took an online course. Now what? I live in New York. Found that this was one of the worst locations to try and get into the business. Can't get a break fo an agent position. Money (that I really couldn't afford) waisted.

I really would like to be in a class setting instead of buying info online. I wouldn't spend money on a course. There are many brokers out there that will teach you without charge. You do need some sales experiance, energy and confidence. I spoke with a brokerage several times and then they flew me out for a interview followed by round trip tickets to a 2 week training in their office. It was pretty intense at first. Look around, make calls and sell yourself that is what they are looking for. |

Thank you for your comment. You are correct, but I believe tat the correct factoring can help. Some factoring companies will pay the truck, then remits the commission to the broker. In this way, a broker must operate on his profit, and not on the carriers money. This should help the financial stability of the broker. |

Doug in Webster, New York said: Obviously you have never been to a freight broker training school or you didn't do your research and picked a bad one. I went to one with out any prior experiance and became a freight broker. I have 20 agents and I'm extremely busy. I could not have done it if it were not for the school. There was alot of hands on training, posting to load boards, cold calling as well as theory and requirements. In fact, two other students from my class of 8 are currently freight brokers. Three out of eight, not bad. Others may have become agents. Where did you receive your training? |

I am very interested in being a freight agent. I have been looking for help on the net for training on being an agent. I would like any input that anyone has on being a freight agent. I don't have the kind of money these training classes are asking for but I can assure you if someone is willing to take a chance on me they will never regret it. Thanks again for any help that is available |

guthtrans in New Orleans, Louisiana said: Hi: You can pay $3,000 to attend a broker training school or $29.99 for a manual and still not know if you want to be a broker or broker agent. The best way to really know if this business is for you is to be honest with yourself about what talents you have and what your strenghts are. If you have good communication skills, you know basic math, and can handle a face pace environment then you can do this job. It all starts with you. No training program or manual can tell you if you are qualified. You have to make that decision. Companies invest a lot of money when they set up their training program. All of us need customers to train. I promise you will not be turned down even if you can't count to ten as long as you pay the fee and are willing to learn. This is a good business, but it also has many challenges and is not meant for everyone. The forum is not a place for advertising or finding contacts to get you started. I believe its purpose is to encourage productive and helpful communication with others who share your interest. |

My husband is a owner operator & I am a stay at home mom, who feels that I need to contribute to the family, so I am looking for something that I can do out of our home. I started to explore freight brokering on the web after seeing an ad in Land Line magazine. This is of interest, but as some of the others have stated there are a lot of training programs out there & they are quite costly. I would like to obtain a freight broker license & get something started so that when my husband retires eventually (hopefully) we can do this together. |
