He knows our graduates are a tenacious bunch, straight commission - all working with a sense of urgency. Check out our daily blog just for freight brokers on www.brooketraining.com
Please let me know what you think.

Thanks for your kind email. Very cool to hear Steve is well.
I really liked that Dude. He is all class. Yesterday I talked about making a customer not a sale and that is exactly what Steve does. If he ever gets in anywhere, he is in for life.
People love doing business with Steve. I sure did

I own a freight brokerage with the main office based in Ames, Iowa. We are willing to work with inexperienced agents around the country if they have the drive and focus that it takes to be successful. Training programs can be helpful for someone who hasn't worked in the transportation industry, but we are often willing to work with people who don't have experience. We use very intuitive web-based software to manage our business and offer the top loadboards for our agents to use. We don't charge our agents for their software access, we pay our agents twice per month and offer a competitive commission structure. Please click on my profile link and contact us through the information you find on our website if you are interested in learning more. Thank you.

Best regards,

Anyone who believes you can learn the freight brokerage business for free is fooling themselves. I'm sure there are a few fortunate ones who are learning from an existing brokerage, but these oppertunities are rare. It cost money to train someome. Nothing is free in this business. Working as a freight broker agent in todays industry is extremely challenging. For those of you with common sense you know there in no free ride no matter what career you choose. It takes hard work and money to learn a trade and have any hope for success. Most of you will not be successful in this business. The skills required and the commitment necessary to be successful will be found in only a select few. Most people who invest the time and money to learn the freight broker business will fail. This is a fact. You may not want to believe it, but accepting this fact will help you to decide if this is the right business for you. I have no personal agenda in sharing this with all of you who are considering this business other than the hope that it will help you to make the right decision before you invest your time and money. No one in this business is making easy money or getting rich without hard work and some level of experience. For those of you who are sure about learning this business then go for it and be ready to make the sacrifice and commitment. For those of you who are not convinced that this business is for you, then I would advise you to do your homework and be honest with yourself before you decide either way. Just remember this; You don't get anything for free and the majority of people who get into this business do not succeed. This is a fact.

I am not a negative person, just a realist. I don't have patience for people who try to sugarcoat the truth and live in a dream world. I am the GM for a successful trucking company. We started a brokerage division a few years ago. I have seen many people come and go in this business. They all had a positive attitude and the will to succeed, but most of them were not prepared for the challenges they would face or they were convinced they could make some easy money without hard work and sacrifice. I think the brokerage industry provides great oppertunities for some people. I'm simply reaching out to those who are considering this business for a career and being honest with them. I believe I could wright a book about my own experience in this business and help many people understand the challenges they will face before they make a decision to invest their time and/or money. No, I'm not a negative person at all. I'm just someone who has poured his heart and soul into the brokerage industry the past few years and have learned enough to share with you the difficult challenge that awaits you. I have no problem with those who are training and those who are looking for an oppertunity to learn the business. Just be honest about it. Only a select few will find true success in this business. The rest will fade away within months after trying. Comparing the brokerage business to working at Hardee's is ridiculous. This statement alone tells me that you have no idea what your talking about. It's unfortunate that you are offering advice to those who are considering this business. For all those trying to make a decision, good luck and God Bless.

J.Saint in Medina, Tennessee

If I called it wrong, I apologize. But, because I referenced Hardee's in no way dictates my knowledge of the industry. And why would I even consider comparing the industries? Nowhere in that statement did I compare the two types of positions, but employment itself. Would it help if I referenced my other positions at the USF companies, Contracts for Landstar, or others? None of those charged me. I was not bashing you, but I hate to see those companies on here asking for thousands to train these folks that just want a foot in the door. These Brokers that want to charge for the training are probably just protecting their investment of time, but I feel if you train them right, you will only profit from them. And, as for the comments on your posts, I just guessed you as a Broker trying to protect your market share and scare off want-to-be agents. If you don't mind me asking, what Trucking Company are you associated with?

I'm relieved that you were not trying to compare the two. I agree that it is unwise to invest thousands for training unless you have gained enough knowledge and experience to advance in the industry. I would suggest starting with a training program that covers the basics and charges a small fee before paying a lot of money. I would also suggest working as a broker agent for some time before you consider starting your own brokerage. Most people who are beginners in this business have no idea how difficult it is to start your own brokerage company. You need deep pockets and and solid customer base before you can hope to be successful as a brokerage company. I'm sorry if I seemed to attack you. My intention is to paint an accurate picture for those interested in the brokerage industry. Like I said in my first comment, I have no personal agenda. I don't see any advantage in naming my company at this time. But there is one more thing I would like to say. It is very common for brokers and broker agents to experience some success for a short period of time. Many of them will jump around to different brokers and eventually fade away. The reason for this is that they were able to move loads for a while but did not offer good customer service and were unable to build a long term relationship. Their business practices are unethical and not prudent. The result is a short lived career as a broker agent, but I can assure you that these are the same people who will brag about how successful they are and walk around with a chip on their shoulder as if they accomplished something to be proud of. Once again it all comes down to hard work, sacrifice, and committment. And even that isn't enough without sales skills and communication skills which can't all be taught. It requires some natural gifts that not everyone has. That's what I mean about being honest with yourself before deciding to get in this business. Failure to do this may result in wasted time and money.

Newbies please beware of the wolves in sheeps clothing. Make sure that the broker that you want to work for is right for your needs. Also, get everything in writing. It is so important to understand what is expected of you. Go for companies that pay upon invoice. You will get paid quicker. Also, check out the broker. Ask for some carrier and shipper references. You can find out alot about the integrity of who you work for. As far as training? It is what you are most comfortable with. Check that out as well. Testimonials mean nothing. It is easy to contract someone to say something nice. That is a selling technique. Most people are honest, few are not. Be careful and don't sign anything in haste. This business is not easy. It has ups and downs. Make sure you know what you are doing.

Andy in Houston, Texas said: I'm looking for help learning the broker business.

Do you need an agent in the Houston area? I'm more than willing to learn if you are willing to teach. I am a go-getter looking to get into the broker business. To get the experience that I require, I'm more than happy to work as an agent. I know broker school is an alternative, however I do not have the type of money required to get formal school training at this time.

If you need guarantees on your knowledge, I'd be more than happy to agree to commit to working for you an agreed upon amount of time. If you would feel more comfortable on a trail basis, I'll do that too. All I need is a chance and a good teacher and you'll definitely see a return in your investment of time in me.

I currently work nights at an oil and gas firm here in Houston as what can best be described as dispatch/inventory control so I'm available to work just about any business hours that you need me to be available during the day. I'm motivated, intelligent, hard working, and hungry for success. I just want to find the right opportunity, so I'm here trying to create my own.

I can provide you with resumes, references, or any other information that you need to prove that you would be making a worthwhile investment in training me. If you'd like to meet and want to have lunch in the Houston area, I'd be more than happy to sit down with you and treat you to a good meal here.
