Good advice to all when joining any broker or trucker or forwarder as a agent, check their authority, if they are a broker check their bond if a carrier or forwarder check their insurance, check how quick they pay carriers, check how long they were in business, anyone can build a web site, ask them to send you their sales materials that will be going to persons that you are trying to get to be accounts, ask how long is business you can verify this by seeing how long they had their authority, you can check their dot number after you get a copy of authority by going to the dot safer sight.
If all this checks out and you can sell may be worth giving it a shot, if they are taking you on as a agent you should not have to pay for training. Good luck but make sure you check out who ever you wish to join.

Thanks,
So then if and when there is a claim, the broker uses the carriers insurance?

Yes, some brokers carry contingent insurance, this is sort of a secondary insurance that is there in the event the carrier somehow gets out of paying and is a back up for you. Sort of like an umbrella policy. However it is not required. Just make sure you check that the carriers you use has a policy that is current before you give them freight.
Good luck on your new venture.

BigMACK in Cornelius, North Carolina said: Going to a school is one way to learn, if you have the capital. However, most people looking to become agents are not able to spend the kind of money needed to go to broker school. There are several more ways to be an agent. You can find a brokerage hiring new comers to train.... you can find carriers hiring brokers for a split. I learned how to be an agent through another brokerage and it didn't cost me a dime.

I'm not knocking Training Schools...but I think most people are better off getting hands on with another broker instead of paying a few thousand dollars to get the same information you can get for free. There are plenty of agencies willing to train good people... Go to clickloads.com and take a look around at the advertising and you will see what I mean.

My suggestion to Newcomers is...
If you don't have $2000 to spend, then go the way of another broker. Seek out your training and do not be scared to call brokers to see if they will help you. If you find a good Broker, they will teach you everything you need to know to get started, and possibly give you existing customers to get freight from and also give you a list of potential customers to cold call. Do yourself a favor and take my advice on this before you decide to spend the money on a training school.

i thank you very much for the info but where do you even start even though i was a driver for some years i am not knowlegable to a lot of things when it comes to this part of the field so if you can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated thank you

What you have to ask yourself is the following, do you have sales ability? Are you able to spend two months calling people looking for accounts before you may see a dime of return on your time. Being a freight broker or agent is really a sales job that is wrapped up in all kinds of promises. If you can sell you can earn a living as a sales agent and once you have an account base then think of perhaps trying it on your own. You would be better off starting off with a broker who would do the dispatching for you rather then for one that you have to find both the accounts and the trucks that is to much to do right out of the box. So if you can sell and if you have to months to put into making calls and looking for accounts then it would pay for you to pursue this providing you can learn from a broker at no cost to yourself.
There are brokers that will do this for you and train you they have nothing to lose as they are paying you commission. Go to the profile section and perhaps send emails to persons who are listed as brokers and ask if they will train you for free in exchange for you bringing the accounts to them. I am sure many of them will even give you free training material just to help you out. You can check my profile for email address and will be glad to give you advice, and help you where I can right now am not putting on agents in CA as have a couple there but will be glad to give you advice to learn the business.

Hello,

I am interested in starting a freight brokerage business, unfortunately I dont have the knowledge of freight brokerage, only transportation itself. I've looked online at some the online courses and they are queit expensive an also far away from my home. Does anyone know of any training courses near the San Bernardino County Area or companies willing to train you to become an agent?

check under profiles of members, I am sure many of the members who are brokers will train you, you can also google for freight brokers and follow up, you should not have to pay for training as you will bring work to them. As long as you can sell you can be a broker agent. Sales ability is the key to this business, no accounts no money.
Good Luck
