I am currently licensed in California for 4 years now. I have taken many classes at Vidal Sassoon, Bumble & Bumble etc. I managed and taught classes, and also did hair on cruise ships around the world. I am looking into getting my Instructors license to teach. However I don't know where to start. Someone told me that I have to have a minimum of 5 years experience. Does anyone know or have any advice?? thanks :)

California doesn't license Instructors of Cosmetology anymore. California "certifies" the instructors now.
Go select a School you are interested in and apply there. If the school wants you, they will help you get certified. Often times they will pay for it as well.

hi lauren,

Im not sure on how you become an instructor but wonder if you have any contacts to hourly wage salons that might be hiring and also if i can get contact info for you and maybe pay for some instruction by you myself here and there. i just graduated and still need to develop and refine my skills. I would also be more than happy to call one of my instructors that i still have contact with and see if she knows what the current requirements/procedures are in becoming an instructor.

I you just look under any of the major Job boards and look up cosmetology instructor employment and focus in on California. The requirements should be listed in what's required of the job. Alot of times your years experience should be enough, they usually require 2 to 3 years traceable experience (tax forms, W-2's) in the field, or you need to get additional training at a cosmetology school because you don't have enough years, you'll have to make up the difference in additional training. My suggestion is to just stay in the field, rather than waste money on education, you'll better off obtain in the field. If you have the years, contact your local State Board and request info/application for a Cosmetology instructor license, you'll have to take a Theory test, state law exam, and in some states a practical exam as well. Hope this helps.

In Kentucky, you have to go back to beauty school for 1300 hours and take another board for your instructors lisence. The board is written and you have a mock class. The written is multiple choice but not sure how many, maybe 300 or so. Also, most schools pay hourly and some benefits. I'm thinking about instructing as well and maybe a product profresional ( Matrix specialist or other brand.) You can make great money as a specialist for a product, because big franchises, such as JcPenney, will pay for your travel and time to teach their stylist. Only if you like travel though!!

28 years experience! thats awsome!! You have knowledge of hair and buisness that could help out A LOT of fresh stylists! You need to find the right beauty school for you and go back for your instuctors lisence! In KY, it's 1300 hours and you have to take a written and "mock Class" state board. The written is multiple choice which probably has a lot questions. I'm thinking about it to. We're moving again and trying to gain a new client seems daunting!! Teaching will help me still be in hair, but more stable! Good luck!!

Not familiar with Cali's cos laws but in Ohio it's your managers lic (check out out on line) and then you get your instructors lic by just simply filling out the application and paying the fee...good luck girl I am looking to become an educator too. I have found out that most Colleges are looking for Instructors with 4 or more years of exp in a salon. I have 22 years exp...and want to move towards educating.

If you live in the midwest or are just looking for a good deal on a bunch of cosmetology teaching books and tools, I have an entire 2010 Mario Tricoci University Cosmetology Teacher Program Kit at almost 40% less than what the school charges. The next semester begins in September. If you'd like more info, I currently have the item listed on eBay and Craigslist Chicago. Just search "Mario Tricoci" because I'm not allowed to post the links here. Thanks.

Go on behindthechair.com, chi is always hiring. You have to pay and attend there class is the first step. Also, attend a hair show and go up to the companies that interest. More than likely the will tell you to submit a resume.

As far a an instructor lic in CA, in Los Angeles a few of the community college have instructor courses. It a 2 semester course, the cost is $25 a credit hour. They past a law a few years ago where you only have to have there years salon experience to be an instructor. But only private schools except that, state institute require you have you instructor lic.

Hello all cosmetologist,
I am currently a 19 years salon owner and a 24 years licensed cosmetologist. And now im teaching coemetology at a private school. Im currently holding a fulltime teaching credential in cosmetology wich allows me to teach cosmetology only to adult students at a junior college or adult school or private school. It is true that you get paid more teaching at a jc (which mean junior college) If you hava an AA, AS OR BA OR MS YOU WILL MAKE MORE MONEY STARTING AT 43.00 TO 80.00 PER HOUR. WITH THAT BEING SAID MY NEXT GOAL IS TO TEACH AT A JC. SO IM ATTENDING LA TRADE TECH IN DOWNTOWN LA TO FINISH MY DEGREE FROM 20 SUMTHIN YEARS AGO. SO THAT I MAY RECIEVE HIGHER PAY. IF YOU DONT HAVE ONE THEN YES YOU MAY TEACH ONLY AT PRIVATE SCHOOLS. COLLEGES WILL NOT HIRE WITHOUT IT UNLESS U HAVE THAT OR A TEACHING CREDENTIAL AND MORE THAN FIVE YEARS EXPERIENCE. SO I HOPE THIS ANSWERED EVERYONES QUESTIONS. BECAUSE SOME OF THE INFO WAS INCOMPLETE. GOOD LUCK. OH PS IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE YOUR CAREER GOALS YOU MAY ALSO TEACH AT STATE PRISONS. NOW THE TEACHING JOBS ARE VERY SCARCE IN CALIFORNIA AND YOU MAKE MORE AT PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN OTHER STATES NOT CALI THEY START YOU WITH 12-17 DOLLARS ONLY. GOOD LUCK

How did you start a career doing hair on cruise ships? I have been a hair stylist for the past 10 years and recently thinking of completing course work to obtain a cosmetology instructor position, however for some reason i feel as though it is a backwards move at this point. I have been the owner of my salon as well as moved to a bigger city to work with other salons and the reasons in my leaving seem to be the same there as well. Not being able to build a big enough clientelle anymore. Im sure it is the current economy but at one time i made close to 1500 a week now i am having a good week if i make close to 500. What gives. So how lucrative is styling hair on cruise ships ... any better, worst, or about the same?
Have you ever known someone or worked as a educator for a product company? How is the pay and work demands there?

Thanks

You do not have to have so many years of teaching experience to get a license. Sometimes depending on the state, you may be able to take a shorter course if you have had your license for a certain number of years. However, you do have to already have your Cosmetology license first. All you need to do is find a Cosmetology school that has an Instructor course.

The state of California Certifies through BPPE (Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education) You receive this certification thorough a Board Approved Cosmetology School, the requirement is 5 years experience behind the chair before requesting the certification, which has to be filled out by a Cosmetology school.
Each Cosmetology school has their own standards some are very minimal, others require credentials in education. The Board of Cosmetology has discontinued the Cosmetology Instructor's test (about 7 years now) there is often discussion about reinstating it, but nothing so far.
You can also email the Board and ask your questions there.

Hi,I am taking classes at cosmetology school in Fremont,CA and my teacher does not speak good english(mostly speak spanish because 90% of the students are latinos) . I barly understand her and I can not complain to the supervisor or owner because they will suspend me. The teacher discriminate most of us and does not teach good.
If she likes someone ,she will be nice and give that person clients etc.Once she does not like you she will be rude and never help or give a client.
I was wondering what can we do in this situation and if she needs some license to teach. As far as I know she was a student in that school and after her graduation she started to work there which means she does not have experience at all.
I would simply just leave that school and go to another one ,but I already paid.

Hello I'm sorry to hear that the beginning of your experience as Hairstylist is not going so well. But you have ever reason to be concerned about what you are understanding as well as retaining because you not only need those things to pass board but on into your career. If you can not complain to the head of the school then I would try calling The Cosmetology Board. You should be able to express your concerns to someone there and with retaliation with tells that they know theres a problem.
Also yes you must have a license to teach at a school even nce you have finished Cosmetology then you need Instructors license. So I really don't think they want you to report them. It's up to you to make sure that you ask for what you paid for and need to succeed in this Industry and it's their job to make sure they provide as much as possible. Hope this helps and good luck.

I've been a Cosmetology Instructor for over 5 years. I think it's a great opportunity to expand your career. One sudjestion I think every instructor should do is continue their education by going back to college and getting their Bachelor degree getting certified in the state for a teaching degree. It's so much rewarding. I think you need more then an Instructor's license, I've been there. Look into it, find a school that will hire you and get the experience for classroom management, at the same time work on your degree, get your AA or BA, don't stop at Instructor's license. You'll income will increase by 50%, and the knowledge you expand is so amazing. Good Luck! and be blessed....

That used to be the policy. However, I am a licensed Cosmetologist of 30 plus years. Am a Color Specialist, Redken Educator, former salon owner recently applied to local beauty schools with the info you gave...not so. Because State Boards are beginning to crack down, "accredited" schools are now requiring their teachers/instructors to have "single subject" teaching credentials as well as the Board Certification.
