Does anyone know what the steps are for hair dressers moving from US to live/work in France? I want to move to Paris, however I have no idea how to go about that? Any help would be appreciated! |

Paris is the most expensive city to live in, in the entire world. You should consider living a little outside of paris, it will lessen the cost of your salon rent and such as well. Moving away look overwhelming, but, look at the small steps. Get your pasport, Go to your bank, look for apartments in the area you would like to live in online, make yourself a budget, you should have enough money to stay in France a couple of weeks with no work while you settle everything, it will be easier once you get there, if you do. |

I'm an american hairdresser(from california) living in Paris. I would have to disagree that Paris is one of the most expensive cities in the world. I pay 530 euros per month for rent(but i live in a not so nice neighborhood of Paris-20ème). I was able to get a long stay visa since I'm a student. It took me about 2 months to complete my visa application. If you really wanted to, you can enroll in a french language school, and get your visa that way(since I'm assuming you'll need to learn french). I was going to a school called École Perl before I enrolled into my University. Once you are fluent and know vocabulary to your trade(you don't learn hairdressing vocab or in my case hairdressing and fashion vocab in school), then you'd be ready for a job. Which is the hardest part. I'm looking for a job right now too and I'm fluent in french. Most likely french people are hired over americans unless you have an exceptional quality, like being fluent in both languages and have great skills in your work. And then I think we need our french hair license. Also make sure you have enough money to live in Paris. Rent is one of my lower costs. You also have to think about the cost of school(my univ. is super expensive), groceries(between 100-200 per month), transportation(60 euros for a monthly navigo card), and if you want to have fun in Paris(going out-drinks at a bar are usually 7-12 euros, museums-5 to 20 euros... that gets really expensive), because if you aren't working, money goes fast and also when you're broke, Paris isn't as glamourous as people make it to be.

I am a fully qualified English speaking hairdresser living in Paris and I want to find a part time job in a salon to have along side a mobile buisiness. I have lived here for 2 months and my french is poor at the moment although I am looking to have lessons as soon as possible. I wonder how difficult it is to find a salon willing to take a english speaking hairdresser or even if it is possible with no French? |

Hello, thank you for getting intouch with me. Since my post last month, I have started having four hours of French lessons a week and it is slowly started to get better. Also, I am now looking for full time work in a salon. I have recieved 12 clients with my mobile buisiness so far, both French and English, but due to my current financial situation, I am looking for more full time work.
