Which one is better?
PM looks slightly edgier and more like my style yet Aveda Institutes look much more professional, which leads me to believe that it is the better of the two.

I attend a PM school and I absolutely love it!!!! Its like a family... everyone has your back and they incorporate so much more than just learning how to do hair. On top of that John Paul Dejoria is so hands on with his furture professionals he attends every new school opening and they also give you opportunites to go on and be in capers. You also get to join the PM connect website and start right away networking with other salons all around the country and world to help get your foot in the door. Each week we get guest artist that come in and teach us things a few months ago we had Robert Cromeans!!!

I would definitely go with the Aveda Institute. I have great evidence to support my choice, that being my girlfriend showing me Paul Mitchell products and me finding them very boring and annoying. I must say I was not entertained at all. If Aveda Institute even makes products, I am 100% confident that I would like them substantially more.

My girlfriend supports me completely in my claims.

I would also like to add how I find it a great marketing idea that they provide bags of nuts when you buy their products.

I am really leaning towards going to Aveda in Charlotte, NC. The only problem I am having is finding housing. I am from Greenville, SC, so I would be moving to Charlotte to attend Aveda. Are there any suggestions to where I should live (downtown Charlotte or a residential area)? The cheaper the better for me!

BTW, AVEDA IS NO DIFFERENT! THE ONLY THING IS YOU ARE LIMITING YOURSELF TO LEARING ONLY AVEDA WAYS AND PRODUCTS.
aveda has a mile per salon . meaning each salon has to be a certain mile radius away from each other away. they are really far apart.
if you want a job, the only experience you have will be aveda. and 20,000. to pay back. and no one will care becase you will only have the basics down. and you will only assist any way.
do not move. stay where you are, save your money for advanced training!

Well actually Aveda only cost $16,350 for the full course. Where as Phagans cost around $22 thousand or more, so does PM and Beau Monde. Phagans seems to be doing profiling on people which I have heard plenty of complaints! I wouldn't go there. I def recommend Aveda!

I attend a Paul Mitchell school in Tysons corner, before I started I visited every school within a 30 mile radius, and Paul Mitchell had the best staff, teaching/learning techniques, positive attitude, and kit(everything you need-books, tools, doll heads, makeup kit, etc.) The staff is from a wide variety of positions within the field, and they actually care about your education. They believe they NEED to cater to every leaning type, because everyone processes, stores, and releases information differently. The program allows you to have class and take clients, so that you are prepared mentally and physically for salon/spa life. You are taught important life skills, and encouraged to use them as much as possible in school, to develop good habits. At Paul Mitchell, you don't just "learn things," you grow into a well rounded, educated, and professional individual.

I am currently torn between paul mitchell and aveda, so I have been doing a TON of research, and actually, PM is only 17,500 for the full cosmotology course. So..not much difference in price, just a difference in which school fits you as a person.

I live in Vestavia and attend Aveda in Birmingham, Alabama and the tuition is about 20,000. So it varies on your location I guess. But I would definitely recommend Paul Mitchell. I regret coming here, it is a colt.! It's all about AVEDA, nothing else. If you don't plan on working at an Aveda salon or spa, they don't help you. Paul mitchell has guest every week. Aveda doesnt. My cousin goes to PM and she loves it.

I might have been trained only in AVEDA but color is color and cutting is cutting its all the same when you know theory! I was overly prepared when I started in the salon! I would pick Aveda personally because of all the opportunities they give you to think outside the box!!

DO NOT go to a Paul Mitchell school. All of their instructors are fresh out of the class. I had a friend that started at the school in Raleigh, NC and she said you don't learn anything you need to and it's not nearly as professional as it looks. I went in for a consultation because I've been looking at beauty schools as well and the instructors at the school do not know what they are talking about. Go with Aveda, that's where I'm going :)

that is absolutely wrong I go to aveda, and i have a milady text book, work book, exam book and i have two binders of aveda you learn both; you learn the aveda way and the state board way. AVEDA IS AN ADVANCED SCHOOL PEOPLE!!!! you have to be able to retain both information. Going to aveda changes your life, lifestyle, and mindset it will be the best experience youve ever had at an institute. Hands down.

I also attended Aveda Birmingham, and the person above is incorrect. The tuition is not that high. In my opinion, you make school what you want to make it. If you are a lazy butt, then you will get nothing out of it. Aveda is a great school, as I am sure Paul Mitchell is as well. It is a personal choice. We have personal guest Tuesday - Saturday. We also have Career Fairs and the staff does assist us with job placement and resumes regardless of where we seek work after graduation.

I am attending a Paul Mitchell school, I think you souls do o each school and have a tour before you decide, they are both amazing schools, but you must choose the one that is right for you. Attending Paul mitchell the school have been the best choice of life so far! We have so much fun and everyone is a family. They made learning incredible and fun. Paul mitchell has some amazing techniques for blow drying, coloring, texturizing, cutting, and even make up! lol Oh, and they do help you with housing as well (:

I attended the Aveda school in Charlotte and know that the products are definitely better than Paul Mitchell. They contain little to no carcinogens. To me, the healthier the product, the better the quality. And the products work so well! Also, you learn so much in their school program, when the time comes to take your state boards, you're ready to go. I passed mine with high scores and barely studied. I would recommend this school to anyone. It actually cost me about $19,000 to go there, but financial aid helps you to get scholarships and grants. You also get to work in the schools salon and make tips from your clients. Also, you have to think about your life after school. Do you want to go to some cheap school (not PM, they are pretty good) and work at great clips afterward, or do you want to go to a great school that can connect you to more high end salons?

sorry i didnt realize you posted this; lol some other schools do require a basic skills test its not only aveda ive taken a few in my search for school; no its not hard its just basic skills math reading you know? no need to practice unless youre horrible at basic math lol jk no the school isnt hard but you have to pass state board with a 75 or higher practical and exam so we practice that every 300 hours but thats why we also learn milady way aveda way is more of the technique in facials and youre not really tested on that until you start working on the clinic floor; i just got on the floor and ITS AMAZING i definently recommend this school seriously if you have any othedr questions email me instead lol peytonrogers92@gmail.com

I toured both PM Huntsville and Aveda Bham schools. Impressed with Aveda. PM disapointed me because the floors needed to be swept in reception area and other areas you'd expect to "stay" clean. The tour guide disappointed me as well because she seemed unknowledgeable - just going through a script and didn't seem to care. BUT I like the location of PM and want to know how the Huntsville instructors are - do you think they teach you well and prepare you for your career?

Aveda is ridiculously strict. I would know. I got terminated from there TWICE for some nonsense that they accused me of which wasn't even true or proven. And what's even more funny is the school terminates you AT the 3rd week of your second quarter, (that's the week where the school now gets to keep 100% of your tuition, regardless if you completed the rest of the quarter or not). STAY AWAY from Aveda. They are a serious scam and have no humanity in a single ounce in their blood.

I went to pm in slidell, louisiana. It's dirty, they don't teach you anything but hair, at all. You don't learn facials, waxing, body treatments, anything like that. I also know the teachers over at metarie and they are NOT good. The cutting specialist actually cut my hair and messed it up so bad i had to get it cut short :/ it was the worst cut i have gotten in my life. And the makeup specialist doesn't know what he is talking about either. Aveda seems like the way to go

Before I got started as a Cosmetologist,I toured both schools.I like Aveda products because its natural and paul mitchell because it sells itself. When i first toured Paul Mitchell School in charlotte NC I felt Positive Energy and knew right away that would be the right school. However i still wanted to see what Aveda had to offer, so I made an appointment with Aveda for a perm. First to begin I could not find a parking space in the garage. Second the place was messy and the student who did my perm was not given the best advice by her professor. After doing my perm, she was told to cut the hair, so she combed the hair down and cut off the perm as well as brushed down the perm. Now my hair looks like crap and to top it off the management did not care or offer any advice. Therefore what school did I pick?. "Paul Mitchell" So far Im loving it!! P.S. We also have students from Aveda who's attending Paul Mitchell.

With Aveda you do get to work on people. Some say Aveda is a cult, and it can be, but in a good way. I do feel after being trained Aveda (not at an institute) and now starting to use PM color/product, I feel like your experience after school is all about where you choose to work/who you work for.Any school is going to teach the basics, everything after that is up to you. The owner of my Aveda salon was a horrible business person and although she was loyal to Aveda, she wasn't loyal to her staff and wasn't the kind of salon owner I hoped for. Her manager just took an Aveda business class and pretty much said that the owner isn't doing anything they said she should be as far as providing education and being involved in her business. She is just in it to not work and make money at this point. It took me a long time to figure it out and up and leave.
I've only been with PM for a week, but I love the new owner, she offered me a free cutting class before I even worked for her. I hadn't had a free class since in school. She is arranging more free in-salon training and is promoting me and the salon to help me build clientelle. She has done more for me in the week I've been with her than my previous salon owner did in over 5 years. That is sad. As for the "brand", you'll find you love some things in some lines, and some in others. No matter who you go with you aren't going to love everything they offer as far as color lines and products. That being said, Aveda does offer a lot of support if you want to really get involved and pursue things on your own and have good business ethics as a company (working off wind power and sourcing ingredients in a way that sustains indiginous communities) and should really be an example to the rest of the beauty industry. They are a little more "mature" in their ways, less edgy and modern and a little behind in product trends. PM is definitely "hipper" and more modern.
