How did you get your start doing hairstylist work, and what career moves did you make to get to your current position?

Do you need a particular educational background?

You just have to go to a beauty school and complete their program. A good school will have a placement program to assist you into a salon once you graduate.

I would suggest the Brown Aveda Institute. They are wonderful and a few of my friends have graduated as cosmetologists and they said it was wonderful there. They got placed in a salon here called Ladies and Gentlemen. They do good hair just to let you know!

Is anyone going to answer this seriously?

To be a successful stylist, here's what I've learned so far:

1) Finish Cosmetology school and get your license
2) Get as much salon experience as you can while in school
3. Never stop learning. Take as many classes and go to as many shows as you can!

I want to become a hairstylist, but my mom wants me to become a doctor. I am not sure of what to do. I love cosmetology, but if my mom finds out I am not going to college than she is going to be pissed. If anybody has advice please send.

All that you should be concerned with is what you enjoy doing. Focus your energy in hair and you will succeed. I went down to the dreaded path of being put down by others over the thought of getting into the profession but now can honestly say that I am glad, happy, and enjoying my career. The worst thing to do when your older is to look back at your life and feel that you could have achieved more in your life. Go for the gold...rise up and see that rainbow that awaits you!!

Your mom is not going to be the only one putting you down. I am a cosmetologist and it is a constant struggle to justify my education and carreer. My personal plan was to go to Beauty School so I could have an actual career through college instead of just a "job". I always say I am a "PHD" - Professional Hair Dresser that is. ;)

Aveda institute is one of the best hair schools. They teach you the best way to go about anything concerning hair and they don't tolerate any crap. You must maintain a C average. All you have to do is contact someone at the school and set up an appointment. If you really want it you would make it happen. Goodluck

Don't listen 2 them I was 15 when I started doing my mothers friends hair.
You can start making money as soon as you learn your first hair style. Example you meet a friend who needs highlights go and learn how to do them and practice on her hair if she lets you.

Majority Of Hairstylist start off this way , at least the ones who love to do hair. You sound like your excited about starting a career in styling, So your best bet is to start now the better you get the closer you are to charging.

Now, in my community we call this bootleg, Trust this you will develope clientelle , Which is what salons will demand when you job search anyway.

Get an Internship at a salon, Maybe youve gone to the same salon for a long time, ask them if you can intern on lower pay, call your local offices to help your employer find forms, laws, etc for interns. This will be the best way to earn while you learn thats what Im doing I love it Love it.

Not your cup of tea? You can totally get started through your high school. Go to your guidance counselor and ask about any intership programs or continuing education programs offered in your area . Ask Him/Her if Hairstyling is availible for any Pre graduate students or post grad .

I started at precisely at your age and you know what, never amounted because I didnt take myself seriously Even though I had Bought a day planner cause my client list was growing.

I stumbled upon that same Burgundy and black day planner, contact lists and old appointments.

Finding the planner made me realize I had something even back then at 15, Im 26 now.

So with a YOU GO GIRL, I bid you fair well and go full speed ahead Because when your done with all these educational programs posted here the only thing that can stop you from getting started is bad customer service and these posters advice Clientele is the name of the game because you can almost always bootleg Right.

I have a family friend who owns her own salon in Boise, Idaho. She said that I could intern with her for 2 years and get my license. Is this true? I couldn't find regulations to getting my license through internship online. Anyone who has insight to this, please let me know!!

I graduated from chic university a Regis school and got a job at Regis salon in the mall. I graduated with top honors and passed the boards right away. They have a sixty day policy at regis salon that you have to be able to do the work in the salon. I was let go at sixty days because I had a few complaints from some women clients about cut and color. I have trouble with the trendy cuts and color. This really took my confidence away and I don't know if I want to ttempt doing hair again. School cost me ten thousand dollars.

They wanted their hair did? That actually has a cute ring to it. ;)

I have been doing my own hair for a long time and I decided in my late 20s to finally go to beauty school. I never made a lot of money doing hair, but I am still thankful that I went to beauty school when I did.

I am 31 years old and I am going to shcool for cosmeotology. I wanted to know what I could do, being that I'm just starting out. I have not found a lot of people who will let me do thier hair so I have decided to work on my mannequin until then.I love hair tutorials in any way that I can get them. Do you think that I am to old to start a career this way. I have big aspirations but the thought of my age get's in my way.

There is no way you are too old to start a career in Hairdressing. I see old ladies at the supply store who still work as a hairdresser. Some may even be semi-retired. Advertise in your local newspaper or go on Craigslist in your area and let people know you are in need of subjects for practice. You may get a response that way. Offer free services or charge minimum. There are alot of shut-ins that would also appreciate your services. Good-Luck
