To make a long story short, I have went to 3 different schools for nursing and have dropped out every single time, in the mist of it all i have a had a beautiful baby girl, to my families dismay out of wedlock, so I am looking like a dissapointment at the current stage. Unfortunately for me the only way to a successful life is through a medical career. I have decided to go to beauty school, something my whole family or anyone who knows me would agree i have a talent of hairstyling since i first picked a brush. I am geting a lot of negativity when i have told ppl about my choice. I feel like i have wasted almost 4 years of my life by not pursuing my dreams. I kno ur not supposed to base your life on others, but my friends are almost finished with college, and i have not one college credit. If i had went to beauty school. i could have gained a following by now and opened a salon with the same money my family wasted in sending me t nursing school. I probably would have done nursing school after ward jus to have somethinbg to make a little money extra here and ther on the weekends. anyway, sorry for the typos and grammar i typed this while distressed i guess my question is has anyone else been in a similar position and turned out sucessful? |

Hi NKN, I know what you mean. I spent many years pursuing my college degree, my BS in Business Administration, and finally finished in February. Now that I am done, the only jobs available to me are horrible jobs that pay very little and are VERY stressful. After applying for hundreds of postions and finally getting a job, I only stayed for 7 months, due to the stress, low pay, and dissappointment in my career opportunities. I also always wanted to go to Cosmetology school and was discouraged from doing it. Now I still want to go, but again my family is discouraging me, my DH said he would let me use his GI bill for a Master's degree but not for Cosmetology school. So right now I am just in limbo finishing out my last week of work, now pregnant( which I am very happy and excited for) and regretting not going to Cosmetology school. hopefully I can convince DH to allow me to use his GI Bill for the school after the baby.

NKN I say if you want to, then do it. Just know what you are getting into. I see people post on here how much money they are making etc etc and I hope that doesnt mislead anyone into thinking that they will just jump right in and make 1000 a week after a couple of years. It simply does not happen that way for MOST people. I LOVE the industry, and I am going to try to make a career of it doing something besides being a stylist. Most of the people that I went to beauty school with in the late 1980s are NOT doing hair. Most of them dont even have their license anymore. Many of us went to college to get a degree and do something else. Heck, my old hairdresser from the early 80s is now working in the medical field. She makes a lot more money, although she did well as a stylist. You just never know. Again, if you want to then do it. Just know how you will manage financially when things are tough. You'll be fine |
