doesnt look good for construction,Ive been watching the stock market since may-08 to now. states are pulling there money back for the big jobs-all roads and bridges so not to get them started and then put them on hold when they run out of money.Im in Ohio it sucks here Strickland is trying to bankrupt Ohio.Im going to try to head for Col,Mt.N.D.UT.

As we in Michigan all know the Excavating jobs are few and far between. I have been out of work since april of 2008. I did however work on a Custom Harvest crew out west for the summer, It was a great experience but not my line of work. The company I worked for in excavating has lost a lot of people with just five people they lost over 150 years of combined excavating experience. These people left the stat and will no be back and this is just one small company in northern Michigan. From what I have learned this has happened all over Michigan. Witch begs the QUESTION??? What happens when Excavating picks up and it will at some point. Alaska will soon be needing over 7000 Operators for the new gas pipe line they will get them from the northern states. I see wages going sky high in the next few years what do you all think? I have been an Equipment Operator for over thirty years. I belive we are about to see an Operators market. Thought's please.

I hope your right, but I see the oposite effect happening. I think we'll see the mglobal economy crisis used as an excuse to keep wages down. And I emphasize the word excuse. Although the bidding may go lower, It will still be at a level to maintain a decent wage. But the crisis will be used as an excuse to keep our wages low. We as operators, and other trades alike will be forced to work for less or not at all. The only chance we have in my oponion is if the unions become strong again. Lets all hope no more states pass the right to work act. Or the fed govnt, repeal the davis bacon act, if they do were all screwed!!! If at any time in history the govt would consider trying this, it would be now, with the billions they just spent for const projects. THIS REALLY HAS ME WORRIED..

I remember back in the 1990,s here in Michigan Gov. John Engler done away with the Davis bacon law Because he could not get bids low enough on the new 496 around Lanising so he done away with it. The bids never came down instead the contractors pocked the money. Engler was later sued and had to reinstate the law. Michigan is more non union than union as far as equipment operators. I just see the perfect storm coming as so many experienced operators have left the state. I guess time will tell.

i believe you are right but the question is the quality of operators. based on my exp. i have seen alot of companys start doing the buddy system or click what ever you call it, witch isnt all bad but some companys are getting the work and just filling posistions with there hunting buddy that quit his job at the local tayler mart to get the pipeliner pay.. and that pushes you and me outa a job.. I have learned that it dont matter how good you are, if there is somebody above you that wants to put his buddy in your hoe, your gone.. It really pisses me off to see this happening and it does all the time.. So as we are watching as we drive by at sombody just breaken out on the line and thinking "dude come on get some quality hands".. sorry im getting worked up about it.. ha ha.. whine'n dine'n pipeline'n..

Boy is it rough around here, every man for himself, market is flooded with operators and contractors can pay low..no per diem...on a good note the twic card and riggers certs will weed out some illegals.
Local 450 is in the crapper, international stepped in and Ronnie Witt is being held accountable...they cleaned house! Anyway there are some jobs going out...turning them down, i gotta work non union..have to follow the money.
Im in Port Arthur Motivia for Becon...hanging in there.
All i can offer up is what i've heard..
Becon is doing some hiring. so is Turner and Zackery all in Texas, guess you have to be willing to travel..have a book? give 450 Houston a call, although i think the list is topping 150 .
Wish i could be more helpful..good luck.

Union in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pete,
Since you have mentioned local 450 several times I assume you have worked union before. I am ashamed and angry you used the word "crapper" when describing Local 450. We have gone through some changes, that is true, we remain proud of our past and we look forward to the future. We have some good brothers in the drivers seat and they are making some much needed changes for the good. We will get a majority or the market back and will be the premier local of the south. The contractors will see that the union operators put out a better product over time and will welcome the added value that a professional Union operator brings with him. Attitude, apptitude, ability, energy, enthusiasm and appreciation. Those words are not on the back of the the CCO card in you backpocket that you worked so hard to get. All those traits come natural to a Union operator and we shine everytime. I think you should stay working wherever you can when the works slow, but when the call comes in, you take the job. Then you tell the Rat company you appreciated the work, next time he should hire union, and next time you won't have to drag. You talk about the illegals. You dont have a clue. The illegals wouldnt stand a chance if our goverment would enforce its own laws. You are doing more damage to the wages than the illegals ever have. Dont come back, we will let you in, but you won't be welcomed. "Live Better-Work Union"

I dont know about your local but mine IS in the "crapper".Get angry and ashamed all ya want, i dont give a #@%*. I've been with 450 for almost 30 years, i've paid my dues.
Charges are coming for the people in care of my livelihood,we are talking thousands of dollars stolen..insurance plans that are empty of reserves...selling books to guys off the street when there are over a hundred men on the list..board members drawing a paycheck whilst drawing pension..numerous members working their craft and drawing a pension. Nepotism is rampant , brother ,son or uncle or nephew..going out on top jobs...i sit the list.
Im still there..hall still calls..im welcomed, if its worth my while i take it ,if not i go where the long term and money are at the moment. You been to the special called meetings?heard in detail from international about the thefts going on for years? No i didnt think so. Im trying to live better, working union when its available.
