Has anyone heard of an HR internship? If so then, where? I am 6 months from graduating with a degree in HR/Management and from what I have seen I need some experience to get in line with the competition.

Here's a search I did to help get you started:
There are quite a few results so you'll most likely want to refine the search results by typing in your desired location in the "where" box, and also check out the left-hand refinement margin which will show you the most popular job titles, companies, locations and so on that match your query. Good Luck! |

Whew, wow, it is extremely tough breaking into this field. I am from Atlanta, Georgia and I had to come to New Orleans to break into the field. It's been tough. But, I was lucky enough to get an internship with Ruby Tuesday's after college. But here is what I suggest, if you look up Turner in Atlanta that they always have job posting for internships. That would be my best bet. Good Luck |

I am a Master's Degree student Majoring Human Resources in Chicago, IL. Does anyone know where I can gain experience in HR without having the experience? All the employers' I look at all want years of experience and I don't have any. I would like to go out there and get my experience in the field. I take a very strong interest in the line of work. I am just starting my Master's Degree. When I started my career I had no experience and they hired me but they always want someone with HR Experience. This field is so hard to get into! I have tried Monster, Indeed, Careerbuilder, and Yahoo. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Unfortunately, I can not move out of Chicago or study abroad. I came so close about one month ago I had a phone interview but I just could not take the public transportation out the employer who had the HR Internship. |

Wow so many masters and MBA students wanting to get into HR. Sorry to sound negative but with that sort of education most of you are over qualified for an entry level HR position. A BA is all that most employers require. In undergrad our careers office gave us the advice that a masters without work experience is a major career killer. Killing your career before it even gets off the ground. Another HR career killing move I am noticing is that of first working in recruitment. Stay away from agency recruitment. HR departments do not have a very positive opinion of such recruiters. They view them as pushy sales people with zero knowledge of HR. You do not need a degree or even a community college diploma to become a recruiter at an agency. Former car salespeople and realtors (post housing crash) have gone into this field. However,in-house recruitment experience is valuable in the field of HR. Most inhouse recruitment departments would rather hire a fresh out of college student than someone who has learned bad habits from recruitment firms. Breaking into the HR field is not as difficult as most posters are painting it. You need to be flexible. By this I mean you have to be prepared to relocate to a different city. If it means moving to Alaska for that prized 1 year experience then do it. Once you are experienced you can then choose which city you wanna work in. |

Hi HR Newbie, I'm sorry, but your comment regarding the fact that HR departments not having a positive opinion of staffing agency recruiters is not true. I have seen job postings for HR Recruiters that state in the requirements: 3+ years of technical staffing, in-house or staffing agency, preferred. Here is an example for an HR Generalist/Recruiter: www8.jobirn.com/?q=hr%20recruiter+jobs. Here is another example: jobs.talentexchange.com/a/job-listing/job-description/jobkey-14893.en&job=003770. For example, a scientific recruiter is very knowledgeable about engineering and/or technical positions, and it's difficult to find this combination. You can always teach HR skills on-the-job. In fact, HR and recruiting go hand-in-hand. Recruiters at staffing agencies have developed a specific skill set that is useful in the corporate world. If they have an in-house recruiter, they may not necessarily have to contract out to staffing agencies - they already have an expert in-house. When I read your statement, it didn't sound logical. Recruiting experience is recruiting experience and is especially valuable when it is technical or IT recruiting experience. If technical and IT companies are the ones contracting staffing agencies, would it not be economical to have your own in-house technical or IT recruiter who also has knowledge of HR? It is essentially a 2-in-1 deal for the company, especially in this economy. |

Attempting to transition to HR. I have a MSHRM with tons of adminstrative experience that included HR responsibilities. I haven't been able to get my foot in the door for a real HR position/title. I am willing to volunteer to get some experience beyond what I have. Any suggestions/or offers would be greatly appreciated. |
