Innovative Design Studios in the US

Hello,
After living and working in Europe for over 5 years, as I return to the US I am experiencing some culture shock as I search for jobs in the Design field.
I am amazed at how difficult it is to find innovative creative design studios in the US (SF, NYC area).

It seems like there is a cap for creativity and the interior design industry has gone through a dark period where large firms take the jobs and just produce NICE design but nothing amazing.

Think FRAME MAGAZINE type of interiors.

Any recommendations, ideas on where to look at? I do not want traditional modern design but something more in terms with Mooi, Nendo, Marcel Wonders...etc.
