1. practice your math, practice your math, and practice your math.
2. problem solving, such as alternate piping path ways and deviations from drawings.
3. work ethic; such as working the overtime, being on time, etc.

Tips? Always do quality and not quantity. Yes, plumbers get paid for getting the job done, but in a contract situation most of the time there is a provision for unsatisfactory quality and they can make you rip it out and redo it if they don't like the way it looks. Also if you decide to start your own company it will be easier to get contracts if the owner/GC knows you do good work.

I am a licensed journeymen plumber in Michigan, Colorado and have C of Q in Ontario,Canada. Also have master license in South Carolina. Stuck in Michigan and looking to re-locate. Any leads or advice would be helpful, looking to move to any area. I was unable to continue my small business due to an illness which kept me from working until now. i am healthy and really need to get back to work.
Thanks. p.s. spent last 4 years in Canada, dont want to go back!!!
