I'm sure in this economy you're still blasting your life as a legal secretary but just in case I want updates. I have never read stories by a bunch of whiners and complainers until I stumbled on this forum. Update on me. LS at a very nice firm in the Inland Empire. I have great benefits, pay and nice coworkers. I guess if you're rotten to the core and miserable you attract those types of people. I'm especially waiting for Ms doom and gloom herself "DH" who has negatively posted on any and every thing or question pertaining to this field. What are YOU doing with yourself these days??? Let me guess, still complaining? |

Funny - Judging from the post you submitted, you seem like a pretty angry and unhappy person yourself. I personally didn't like being relegated as someone's puppet on strings for the rest of my life.I have more ambition in life than to spend my days working in the capacity as just someone's asst. If you enjoy that type of work, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.If you actually are happy, then you are definitely a minority and probably in a better position than most of this on this forum because we have either had to stay in jobs that we thoroughly hate or return to school, accruing hefty debt at a time when we should have debt paid off and be doubling up on 401K/Roth payments. I was not a good fit in the legal industry. For example, I have a low tolerance for drama and BS, and I don't make a good doormat. Furthermore, I'm severely lacking in buttkissing skills. I am interested in a career that has advancement opportunities - one where you can actually get promoted - rather than devote time to a dead-end J.O.B. (Just Over Broke). I don't mean to offend anyone on this forum, but I'm not going to sugarcoat anything in order to avoid doing so. I tell it like it is. On this forum, I have attacked the profession itself and not the people personally who work in it. If you like this line of work then defend that on this forum, but don't personally attack those of us who have chosen to move on to worthwhile opportunities and who discourage others considering this line work from making the same mistakes we did. continued... |

Update on me? I work 20 hrs/wk and love my job. I carry 12 units and will graduate with my Econ degree in May. The economy doesn't bother me. It will do one of two things between now and the time I graduate: 1)get better; or 2) get worse. So what? We've had recessions before. We'll have a booming economy again, and then another recession later on. We're in a phase of the cycle. Big deal. I have an appt at the career center next week because a few of the students with whom I will be graduating are already interviewing with companies who are looking to hire in May after we graduate. If I land a full time job, I will start grad school at night in Sept. If I don't land a full time job, I will still start grad school in Sept at night. I expect to start out with a hefty paycut and make less, for the first few years, than what I made 3 years ago as a LS, especially if I accept a position with the fed govt. And I know I will not be in a position where I can call my own shots, but unlike a legal secretary, I know I won't spend the rest of my life at the bottom of the totem pole. I'm looking at the long-run potential. I was no longer interested in investing time and hard work to something that has very little return. The LS profession is thankless and unrewarding. It's the attys who reap the benefits from your hard work. They own nice homes in addition to vacation homes and travel abroad for month-long vacations. They couldn't accomplish that with you and people like you being their grunts; yet you won't accomplish anything close to that (assuming you're not married to a guy with a great career). I was no longer willing to help my atty get rich, not when I knew that I would never have anything to show for it. What you call whining and complaining is our telling the truth bluntly about this industry. Get over it. No one's attacking you because you like it. Look around and read other threads. You will see that,if you are happy with this stuff, you are a rare breed |

Mary - you make me laugh little follow the leader. DH, I'm glad to see you're the SAME miserable person as always. Buttkissing and drama that = YOU to a T dear. You are not content unless you're bashing people and telling them to go back to school like YOU and get a degree. Sadly when you take that SAME attitude to your NEW career you'll be in the same boat.

Happy in Riverside, California said: Mary - you make me laugh little follow the leader. Uh-oh. Somebody got angry and defensive! :-D I'm not interested in lowering myself to any mudslinging. As much as I enjoy reading your posts, this will be my last response to your antics. Your angry response is probably because I hit the nail on the head on many points about this profession. You claim to be happy, but your misery is apparent in the way you respond on this forum. Like I said before, I'm not attacking anyone who has no other ambition in life than to make a career out of clerical work. There's nothing wrong with encouraging people to go to school and pursue education. Why should they settle for mediocrity? You're the one who's doing the bashing. If you've decided to spend the rest of your life as a secretary, that's your problem. You've made your bed so lie in it. This is my last response on this thread; so any more tirades like the one above, talk to the hand... Dear. :) |

Wow, I just found this forum and have been shocked and entertained at the same time. Much of the complaints resonate with me; however, how is a legal job any different from any other job? When dh gets her econ degree, she'll still be working for someone. There will still be obnoxious bosses and co-workers. There will still eventually be a cap to the salary. You will still be subject to layoffs. If you hate legal, then, yes, you should make a change. But it's still a job. Unless we all start our own businesses, we're going to always work for and be dependent on a boss. |
