I graduated from LPN school in 2006 and attempted to take state boards once and failed I never went back. I'm now trying to find out if there is any type of refresher course available. I've tried to study alone but I get to frustrated.

Wow all this information was so helpful. We recently moved to Virginia from Nebraska where I graduated in 1998 from LPN school. I let my license lapse in 2004. We moved to Virginia and I could not believe how easy it was for me to get my license. I have talked to a lot of people that say don't worry about taking the refresher courses, depending on where you work the orientation will be sufficient. But a gap of 5 almost 6 years doesn't look real great. I had looked into refresher courses and came across the same problems everyone else had, so thanks to this website I was able to find out some more information.

Hi,
I am currently offering an IV Therapy, Review and later this year or early next year the refresher course. If you contacted me previously and I did not respond, I may have been a bit under the weather. Please visit Jefferson Nursing Knowledge.com web site and leave me a message if I can be of any assistance.
Thanks

OH LPN in GA in Toccoa, Georgia

It all depends on what state you live in be sure to check with your BON, I'm currently stuck in GA and I've been told that I've been out too long and would have to repeat the whole course...grrr even though when I quit I had over 15 years of experience. Well I used to be licensed in OH and I took the CE's and I'm now licensed in the State of OH. I still want a refresher and CO has a good one and you can take your clinicals at LTC facilities, Idaho also has one that covers most compact states. SC and TX have them also. If you are relatively young, I would suggest once you get your LPN active, go for your LPN-RN bridge they are much more flexible now and in the long run you'll get better job opportunities and pay.

Good luck everyone

There are some very good online refresher courses but you have to find a place near you to do your clinical.

It's been close to a year & still can't find a job. Had lots of interviews & they all say the same thing they have alot of applicants. I think it is my age. I hope I am wrong I don't feel old. Maybe the LPN market for Jersey is being saturated with too many of us.

You may want to consider taking a prn position and it may not be exactly what you want for now but it's a way of getting your foot in the door. You may also want to thisnk about opening your own business(start small) training home health nurse aids which is a way of getting your foot in the door. Also amke sure your resume is well done and HAND Deliver rather they requir it or not. That way they see your face and not a piece of paper. Also send a thank you ote after you deliver your resume again asking for a position and stressing your desire to practice your skills for a profession you love.

Start soemwhere because it is EXTREMELY hard finding a refresher course or review course due to lack of practice.

Sherry Smith in Charlottesville, Virginia said: You wouldn't think it would be that hard to find a refresher course would you? I am so frustrated it is not even funny.

That link I posted, I checked it out more and, I'm certain I wouldn't take a refresher course through them. If for no other reason than... the website itself is very poorly done and I don't know, the way the information is presented is just... very unprofessional.

Are you looking for a course with clinicals? I have had NO LUCK finding anything around here. I think because VA doesn't require it, they just don't have it.

they offer refresher courses in oklahoma. I know for one is at Moore/Norman Technology Center in Norman, Ok. I had discussed it with them about a year ago. It cost 2500.00. You had so many hours of theory, and so many hours of clinicals. I believe it took about 6 weeks, or months. I don't remember. I am definately going back and have my LPN reinstated but I have to wait until the spring. I tried getting ahold of them, but it's right after the Christmas holidays and they are closed until after the New Year. I hope this works for you.

Hello Everyone,
I doubt I will try to return to nursing. It is just too hard. I retired from the Army several years back and now work for Department of Defense as an analyst. The pay is about 4 times what I would earn as an LPN but I was looking for a back-up plan...I have my license BUT as all have demonstrated, it is next to impossible to get a refresher with clinicals on the east coast.

I wish everyone the best in 2010...Barbara Lee

Tina. I just found out there's an LPN refresher course in Somerset NJ. Check www.scti.org/academics/alliedhealth.html#lpnr for more info.

Important: I spoke with Dolly at extension 7132 (it won't let me post the phone number but you can find that on the website) and she said this is the last class they'll be teaching. Apparently the whole nursing program is ending or something. The class meets Feb 1st through April 22nd, Monday and Thursday evenings, and out-of-county residents pay $1,300. So far they only have 3 people and if they don't get more they will cancel the session as they did in the Fall (only 6 people signed up last fall so they canceled). Unfortunately, I don't have the $1,300 to do this but I thought I'd pass the info along - especially, since it's the last time being offered (at least through Somerset County Technical Institute.

Good luck to you :)

Jo Z in Piscataway, New Jersey said: All States are definitely different on this. When I was looking for a refresher course, I called the vocational school in the area and was told that since I already hold a license, I would not be able to attend their classes. I indicated that I graduated umpteen years ago from that county's vocational school, and asked if it would be possible to sit in on the classes and/or eventually participate in the clinical portion - even if I had to pay for the courses all over again. I was told that would not be possible because I already hold a license. It didn't make any sense to me as to why they can't just let me sit in on the class as that would serve as a refresher - you know, like auditing a course in college (that's done all the time), you don't get credit for it but get the teaching all the same - but it was a no go. So... if the CT vocational allows you to take their classes as a refresher, go for it. You would think all vocational schools would do this since it would bring them more revenue.

I wish refresher courses were made more available to LPNs. I've checked all those that offer online courses, with on-site for clinical. The catch is that a local hospital has to be willing to allow you to do the clinical, and I couldn't find any willing to do that. Although there is supposed to be a nursing shortage, I've been told by several hospitals that LPNs, at least in NJ, are being phased out and the only place I might be able to work is at a nursing home (big emphasis made on "might"). It appears I'd have to move out of NJ, or go for my RN. In the meanwhile, I'm not in nursing but rather crunching numbers in an office.

Check into Somerset County Vocational School, in Somerset County. That's where I took my refresher. I found nothing else anywhere. DO NOT DO distance learning, South dakota pffers an online program, you will still have to find a site that will let you do your hours required, and that is impossible!

Try calling Mrs. Stitley if you can't reach her by e-mail. One of my classmates in the refresher was from Delaware and one was from Maryland! something to do with receprocity amongst states. It began at the end of Feb. and was over in May if remember correctly. Then a new group would start almost immediatley. The clinical is in a Rehab with some acute patients. You will be doing dressing changes (sterile) and trach care, and other Tx. as they become available. You work in pairs generally. Yoy will be taking vitals on the floor, blood sugars/insulin and other meds as well. As I recall you are in the class once a week and the floor once a week. It takes almost 3 months because you only meet 2 a week. I believe a couple of days had to be made up as a result of the proctor being out. It was not to bad, and it is worth doing. I will never let my license lapse again! besides i understand Jersey will begin making you test again to re-instate your license in a year or so.

Most LPN Refresher courses require that you complete a review in theory and a clinical experience. If you know an RN who can assist you, you may be able to go about it without atteding a school( if your State Board allows this). Maybe try ot find an RN who works in a Nursing Home or Rehab facility, This route may be easier than trying to complete the clinical portion in a hospital. Also, utilize RN NCLEX review book YES RN ... which is an excellent book. The only difference I found was Management and Critical Care otherwise it is an excellent review.Best of luck. I do offer LPN Refresher and REview but State Board has not approved "home study" as of yet.
