Hi everyone, Just wanted to let everyone know about an LPN refresher course I found out about today. Its for RN's, but they will accept LPN's also. It's in Newark at the Rutger's campus for Nursing, in New Jersey. . They'll send you an admissions packet by email. I can't put in the phone #, so you'll have to look it up. Good Luck!!

I have been a licensed practical nurse for five years. I have NEVER been able to get any steady work. I am maintaining my license because you never know, but I am going to try moving on to get my RN. I have two other jobs trying to make ends meet. I have a coworker who has been a registered nurse for five years, but never really practiced because she wanted to be home when her kids were little. She maintained her license. She went out about three months ago and got
A job. She got regular hours in a facility after not having practiced for five years.
I have tried to keep up on new things and I do my CME's.I try to keep my skills fresh. I am getting disCourage's with the LPN. I can't make a living.

Ladies and gents, looking on the Official Virginia Professional Healthcare website, I found a link that offered refresher courses for RN's with no mention of LPN's until you drill down and dig for it. I have found a Virginia Community College that has an online course with an 80 hour clinical requirement. I am waiting a return call from the course instructor hoping to get an answer to the clinical requirements. I specifically want to know if they coordinate the preceptorship. The course outline indicates it is a local hospital and if that is the case, I would be looking for a partner to share hotel costs for two weeks. The college is Blue Ridge Communit College. Faculty is Ms. lori Wack and after three attempts, I now realize I can't put her office phone number on here because of forum rules. I will put a link up to the course after this post. My work is not done yet, I need to obtain written certification from the state of Virginia that this course is recognized and accredited as far as the Board of Nursing is concerned.

Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to get my expired license reinstated, but I'm not quite sure of the steps. I downloaded the packet from the New Jersey Board of Nursing, but it does not explain what you need to do first. I have been out of nursing quite awhile, so I know I have to take a refresher course. Has anyone gone through this process? Do you have to go through the refresher first, then apply for your license. Also, I never had to do these CEU's, do you have to have these completed before you apply?
Thanks, Cindy

Cindy, I would suggest you make a direct call to the board of nursing. I can't speak for NJ but the three states in which I have worked with in my 30+ years of holding a nursing license have always been very helpful. Sometimes the schools offering the LPN programs can be helpful too. Good luck! I was licensed in a state that didn't require CE's so when I applied in VA through the Compact, it was rather easy for me. I wish you the best.

Hi Cindy,
I went through the process in NJ about 3 years ago. I have forgotten the sequence but if you call the place that you will be doing your refresher at they will walk you through it. The last thing I did was retake the boards and I actually didnt have to do the CEUs to reinstate but a few of the other girls in my refresher course did. You can get the packaged mailed to you or do them online. I think it costs about 40 bucks. i just used the package to renew my license. For me finding the refresher was a big problem, everything else just kind of fell into place.

I was getting told so many things, I did not know who was right. I called the board, and the office that's in charge of reinstating your license. They told me that I did not have to retake my boards, or go for a refresher course. She told me they changed that requirement as of July 2014. They only require you to do the CEU's. She said they encourage you to take a refresher, but it isn't mandatory. I told her I was going to do a refresher because I have not worked in a long time. I found one that's at least close to me. It is at Brookdale College, in their Freehold campus. I hope everything goes well. Thank you for your help, Cindy

DArlene-I believe one of the best things you can do is to take as many practice tests as possible. Try taking computer based tests that are written in a similar format to the boards. The boards are performance based-so you need to get used to them. Many refresher handbooks have CDs with them and you can find some online testing material also. You've already gotten yourself through school so you know you have the capablity---You Can do this!!!! Good Luck!!!!

There is an LPN/RN Refresher course in Florida and I would like for 4-5 nurses to travel along with me.
This is a one day course. The cost is $295 and are held almost every Saturday. I would like to go in December of 2015. So far, I have two nurses who are traveling. We can all chip in on gas and hotel. Once you contact me, we can go over all of the details.

Florida is horrible in that aspect as well. I havent worked in 3 years due to all my experience being in special needs pediatrics up north. All the refresher courses here are only for RNs none for LPNs. Still looking. I did find a company that travels and offer the course for LPNs but its not cheap nor can I really get info on it being accepted. At this point I am willing to pay just on me being comfortable as a nurse in the field again. I wish I knew then what I know now, I would have made different choices as far as nursing is concerned.

www.nurserefresher.com/retail/usamap_FL.html Is this the course that you spoke of? I just read the top of the page that says that "FEBRUARY CLASSES - 2016
(All RN/LPN and IV Courses are Florida State Board of Nursing approved for 6 CEU's- Additional with IV Certification)". I have called the board of nursing and I keep getting conflicting answers. however I believe I am going to go with this program. Its a bit steep in price for my budget but I cant seem to find a refresher course anywhere else that accommodates LPNs

The course was good. Unfortunately I have been unable to find work as an LPN in a position that I want. I took a different path now, I'm studying to become a Veterinary Assistant. Do you have a NY license? If you go to the school in NJ you'll need to get a NJ license too. You haven't been able to find any refresher courses in NY? Good luck!

The name of the course is Nursing Refresher Course for RN's/LPN's with Simulation Annie. It's a good course. It's one day a week from 9-3. Then after a few months you go to a hospital for a week. It used to be eight hour shifts, but I think they changed it to twelve hour shifts. I hope this helps! Good luck! Cindy

Are you becoming a nurse? If you are then all you have to do is call the board of nursing in NY and ask them to tell what you need to get a NY license. You wouldn't need to go to a refresher course.

I received half my tuition back in Bergen County. The course is about 3 months(only 2 evenings a week). My license is active once again, and I am working.
It took along time to find this course, as far as I know it is the only one NJ right now! So try this option it's a good one. I understand that in 2 years or so,all nurses will have to re-sit for the boards if they let their licenses lapse. You do not want to do that!!! Best of Luck!

parusing the comments of lack of LPN refresher courses thruout the states, i would say if at all possible, stay working, never quit working. its what is looked at for jobs. your recent work exp.
the longer you stay out of work, the longer your work exp. record is lacking.
i believe the shortage of LPN refresher courses is due to the new entrylevel of nursing being the BSN-RN. LPNs may become an exinct nurse. if you want to go farther in nursing your only choice is to go BSN. if not, then work as long as you can & opt for training in another medical based career. its a shame LPNs are being phased out but the lack of jobs for them & the lack of refresher courses i beleive is an indication of them being phased out, as well as entrylevel BSN for nursing.

NAPNES online LPN refresher course requires you to find your own place to do your clinicals. i live in illinois & unless u live in the rockford area, you will find it hard to find a place who will contract with an individual for the clinical. i ran into that probelm. the same with south dakota lpn refresher.
no one wants to contract with an individual for the clinicals. u need to have this in place before u can even sign up for those 2 courses (NAPNES and south dakota).
you need a college who has an lpn refresher course that has the clinicals with the course. otherwise it will be extremely difficult to find a clinical based lpn refresher course. thats the issue in illinois. i dont know if its the case in any other state.

Jo in Piscataway, New Jersey said: I took the LPN course through the local vocational school and got licensed in 1985. Although I kept my license, and even went through the recently required background check, I am not an active LPN. I do however want to leave my desk job and go into the nursing field so I've done extensive search on LPN refresher course and found there are none in my area. I was able to find several online refresher courses which all require a certain number of clinical hours - makes sense right! Well I called the local hospitals to see if they'd allow me to do the clinical portion and was told that LPNs are being phased out or are no longer hired in this area - no one would allow me to do the clinicals. I've been researching this for month's with no success. I'm constantly receiving mail from TCN and RUE, but have never bothered to contact them because I can't seem to find a place that offers refresher and it's been well over 15 years. I started taking classes at the local University and have 45 credits and it seems like it's going to take forever to finish (need ~125 credits total for BA/BS). On top of that, the RN program at the local University requires precalculus and at 47 I haven't taken math in such a long time I'd have to start at such a remedial level it will take that much longer to do an RN at the local college . Although I get tuition remission, only the actual per credit amount is covered and I still have to pay students fees which is not set (the more credits you take the higher the student fees). Unfortunately, the tuition remission can not be used anywhere else but this University. It just seems it will be faster to major in something else, but then I wouldn't be in nursing. I feel like I'm between a rock and a hard place - wanting to go back to Nursing and not wanting to have to start from scratch and have it take 6-8 years to get a Bachelor's. So... having said all that, should I just be looking to start over again - from

i too am in the same position. went to a vocationa lpn program in 84/85. was out of the field for some time and it prevented me from being hired due to no current work exp. and and current theory, i was told go to a refresher course. where i live, there are none. 2 online courses yes, but YOU have to get the contract for someone to let u do clinicals. thats a problem since everyone cites 'liability' issues with just one person. u have to have that agreement before these online courses will let u sign up with them. so i have that 'being stuck between a rock and a hard place" too.i've given up. i've tried for over 10 yrs and at my age now, no one will hire me. (63). i do HCA work now. (home care aide) with seniors in thier homes. all i can say is if someone is young enough to get thier BSN (now concidered entry level nrsg do so), other wise i would say retrain in something else.
the WORST THING any nurse can do is stop working for a long pd of time. because this is what u'll be up against if u do. the older u are the more the cards are stacked against you all the way around.
