I had a client ask if I do waxing and I was wondering if that is something that Massage Therapists can get certified in and offer legally in California. I've been trained in Spa services (such as mud wraps & body scrubs) but wasn't sure if waxing was needing to be done through only an esthetician or not. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks! Hi, regarding your comment about waxing, no a massage therapist can not do waxing, only esthetician, I know this because I am a massage therapist and also I am attending school for esthetician. There is a lot of going on with waxing, what type of waxing you have to use, you have to know your clients skin very well, allergies, because some waxes are made from bees wax. My recommendation to you is, if you are already working into the spa business, go ahead and take a class in esthetician, you will learn how to wax, facials, make up, but also and the most important, skin conditions and skin disorders. Let's put it this way, what about if your client is a young male taking acutane, and you go ahead and wax him, Do you know what problems are you going to face in the future? because accutane and waxing don't mix, Why? accutane makes the skin very, very thin, if you wax the skin will lift. When it comes to pre service interview, some clients don't tell you all the truth about what's going with them, and on top of that, you offer a service in which you don't have the hours and the license, you are looking for trouble. Just take the class, you are not going to regret it, because it is more future in the beauty business than massage.
