Got hired for a day spa here in Ontario. But since I dont have my National yet, I cant do massage there legally. So When I start Sat they are having me train in the vichey shower. The pay is based on hrly if you dont work..about 8$ and if you are working, you dont get the hrly but 25% comission. Not sure on the hrs yet. |

Normally, the hourly rate in a spa is like $10-15 base pay unless they have a lot of add-ons, like the Ritz does. They pay like minimum wage or less, but have a mandatory 18% Svc charge PLUS 15massage therapistomm, PLUS gratuity, etc and it ends up around $45 per svc, but nearly nothing with no service.

Because we are strictly commission we are over-staffed, which means we spend more time sitting and doing nothing than we do working. They don't care because they are not losing anything when we are not working, only we do. They only lose if a call comes in and there isn't a therapist available. |

Owners love that we ignore that... |

In maryland I've had experience with two different set ups. First you have to be both nationally certified and state licensed to even work. Otherwise you can get hired as a "spa assistant". But one place I interviewed pays either 8/hr or 45% of the treatments. The other place I worked had a 50% of the treatment split but they had 5 people sharing one room. So basically I made no money at all. I think alot of times when the spa is smaller the owner is only worried about keeping the room filled and not making sure that the people providing services are getting a living wage. |

In many places, you do not need a license to perform body scrubs and body wraps. Questionable business practice perhaps, but not illegal. |

That is scary to me - I would hope they at least require full training of some kind, as to the possible contraindications. People don't always understand the limitations of their own health conditions... |
