I worked for Steiner as a Hairstylist!
On one of the Princess Cruises. i broke up after 6 weeks. They treaten us like sklaves.
I also read all the bad comments but I want to make the experience how it is to work on a Cruise ship. I hoped that it is a bit of luxury or that I see the world. Yes I was in the caribbean and I saw a few countrys but, and it was a experience, I met people from all over the world. And now I know how the ship live is. The most of the crew is from Fillipines, India, Mexico, Indonesia also poor countrys. And in the spa we had a lot of English and South African people.
You work 12-14 a day and a half day is beetwen 7-10h work a day, also not really a half day. I had in the 6 weeks only 3 days off. And that was a privilege, becouse of the Steiner Rules, and they you get told on the cruise ship. Is a half day off when you work from 12-10pm. I don't think that this is a half day off.
And as a hairdresser you are only busy on formal nights wich is 2 nights a week. This are the only 2 days where you earn money, the other 5 days you do only prmomoting to get Passangers into the spa.
Princess cruises is on of the best ships to work on it because you have a lot of privileges, you can eat in Passanger Areas (only on special times, when its not busy, but stil you can) you can watch shows, and do Tours for free, but also only when its not busy. But you have not really time to do anything becouse you work every week more than 70h a week. So I cant do any of the tours. And the shows are every week the same. The food also.

I earned nothing. I had to pay so much money to start working for Steiner and to pay the flight home, and I get no comissions for my work becouse I broke up. So I spent more money than I earned. The massage therapiest and Facials are very busy on our cruise ship. But the most of them had problems with the hand and the whole body hurts from to much work, also mine. My legs got swolen. It's only to much work.
And they control everything from you! I'm so happy to be at home.

Hey shaniah,

Definitely wear a suit, it's profession afterall. And yes wear make up!
Well there will be a presentation for everyone. And then some forms, and some small personal questionnaires like your personality and such. Then you'll break off into groups, fitness, massage, hair etf. And you'll be interviewed differently because of your differing trades.

I hear everything is fairly basic for all trades, I know it was for my trade. You get assessed I'd imagine a lot on your speaking and composure. Appearance matters to a degree I'd say. For my trade yeah we had public speaking and then a one to one. The one to one was literally a quick run through and bam got told there and then if we made it through!

Wish you the best of luck and hope that helps? If you need Anything else Wack your email up and I'll add you on Facebook or something :)

They watched and filmed like 3mins of my technique and said didnt make it..When i asked why they said they are stricked at the academy if u are not up to standards you will be sent home... guess its just not meant to be...I was supper suprised about not getting on...But really from what i read, I think its like a money grab boot camp!!

trade on board is fitness! i think it varies very much between trades how your experience is with steiner which isn't a negative of course.

as a business the sole aim is to generate revenue, so anyone bad mouthing them for the whole money situation is ludicrous, simply for that reason. they are a business and thats what businesses do.

with regards to working as fitness my experience with them has been good, I've worked on two different ships I've seen numerous places and had fun in the process.
however, the nature of the beast which is business and companies in general you don't know what manager your going to get ( just like any business really ) and your experience can differ due to that. they can make your life great, or hell. but isn't that the quandary you get going to start work for any company? you don't know what your manager will be like?

anyway, the other factor which i found greatly influenced my day to day emotions on board was the spa girls themselves. i know i know shocking right? but i was on board a ship which had very immature girls working there and they were malicious and nasty. so that interaction wasn't great, it seems young spa girls dont take too kindly to not getting attention from someone haha. but that being said, as fitness you are generally disconnected from the spa a bit as your in the gym all the time and you only really see them and socialise with the girls if you want to. don't get me wrong some of them were truly lovely, but the vast majority i wouldn't give the time of day to, i was however, always civil and polite.

i made good money, and i made money consistently, i was praised for having potential etc. problem is when you make low money as fitness you know about it! everyone tells you to do better etc etc, but when you do good, you get the odd recognition about it but thats about it.

training for the job was the best time i have had, made some friends for life that i stay in touch with and have memories to cherish forever.

life on board is good, I've met some amazing people and love them to pieces. the social aspect to life on board is like no other! and you will really miss it when you are home that is a promise. the guest interaction can, at times get really on your nerves as it is very much a yes sir yes sir three bags four sir. situation. like it is in any hospitality industry. with fitness your working life is HARD you have to be super fit, if your cruise does seven days, you better believe your doing boot camps four times that week, and three spins three yogas, etc etc etc a long hard week. you must be confident in yourself and you must believe you can do it. i don't think believing in the product is the necessity here, i think believing in yourself is the main thing. as people buy into you, not the product. but yeah anyway as i said before guys more than happy to add anyone on Facebook just whack your emails up and ill add you :)

Hello everybody!

I've just get positive response from Stainer and I'll work for them as a massage therapist too! I don't know when my training starts though, soon I hope.

Anyways, I would like to ask you guys for some tips, how to pack properly for living in a ship...? What to take? How many clothes I'll need and what kind? Do take cosmetics or can I buy them on the cruiser? (Are there shops at all? Sorry I'm totally green, have no idea how to prepare! ;) Will there be a place in the cabin to fit a suitcase or its better to take a big bag or a bag-pack?
I would be very thankful for every piece of advice ;)

Hello, I just finished my contract sk I can help you out... Bring plenty of comfy and sleep clothes.. Bring a few cute dresses and heels and nice shoes and sandals, you want plenty of options for clothing since you will be wearing a uniform. Bring all of your make up and hair accessories ; flat iron, dryer etc. make sure you also have a converter for your electronics.. Bring a jacket and some hoodies. You don't have to bring shampoo or soap since most ships have a store inboard for crew to buy those things.. All ships have stores onboard. I would reccomend bringing one decent sized suit case and maybe a smalle duffle bag. There is space in the cabin for your suitcase. Prepare for winter and summer you don't know where your ship will be.. Bring jeans and slacks also.. Bring jewelry and perfume. Make sure you leave room in your suitcase for things you will buy. I bought a whole new suitcase just to bring back the things I bought..

Thanks a lot for such quick response, now I got it a little bit more clearer, but still it's a lot of things to pack in a "decent" suitcase ;)

Oh no it's fine... I went a few days earlier to do some sightseeing... You will be in class from 8 am to 6pm sometimes they let you out earlier... Me and the girls went out at night , there are plenty of bars and shopping to do around by the YMCA.. It is walking distance from where you stay

Does anyone know about recruitment web sites. Are any of them for real. What about paying a fee for recruitment.
I don't want to work for Steiner again but I am having a hard time getting a response from any other companies.
I have all the Cert. and Degrees one could need in Exercise Science, Esthetician and Massage Therapy.
Any help I have tried all the suggestions given so far.

Try Cunard Cruise lines, I have heard many wonderful things from passangers about their 5star treatment of passangers. They have ships like "Queen Mary" and "Queen Elizabeth" they are a very upper scale of the cruise line industry. Let me know what you find out.

I have an interview the first week in March with Steiner; I am a massage therapist just getting out of school so I figure while I'm young, I want to work my butt off, save some money (even if it isn't tons) and this is the best way I know to be able to travel. Hearing all this negativity makes me a little bummed, but I think life is what you make it. Law of attraction, keep your mind right and good things will come to you! Anyone have tips for the massage interview? I get a little nervous public speaking but I'm confident that will be alright. I appreciate and help! Thanks!

Best of luck to you. Do it while you are young. There are pro's and con's to everything in life. Plan on it being very rough and hopefully you will be very plesantly surprised. Keep an open mind. Just remember you WILL have down time and you will see places and things, cultures that you may never be able to afford in the future. Look at it like an adventure and a chance to do some things that a lot of other people never will. Enjoy yourself, but be safe in all you do. I wish you only wonderful things and wonderful experienced. Bank your money, give yourself an allowance so that when your contract is up and you are sure you want to come back to dry land you will have enough cash to buy a new car or perhaps a new home, cash! Love to hear how it goes. All the best to ya!

Real findings in Auckland, New Zealand said: How was the steiner experience. Can you share please as I have been offered a placement at the steiner academy, however; I am from NZ and it is a big investment for me so I need to make sure I have as much resources as possible.

How was your time at the academy. I went the on the 23rd of January intake but left at the end of the second week. I found the trainers to be very unethical and the money to be quite poor for a personal trainer. On land ten hours work can land me with $1000, which seems to be what the top earners earn. I have ten years industry experience and know a rat wheh I see one

Good day to all,
I am still in massage therapy school, graduate in May and interested in the cruise line life. Can anyone that has been there, elaborate?
I'm interested in the contract options; length and renewal how does that work? Training in London? Expenses?
Thanks for any comments,
Tony

It's nice to see people getting out there, making things happen on the cruise ships. However, the truth is I wouldn't recommend it. I am a ten year veteran in the personal training industry who also trained with steiner in London. PTs are trained by the same company as hairdressers, beauty therapists and massage therapists. My experience is mostly negative. I quit the training in only two weeks of being there. If you do decide to go there, then be prepared to have your rights violated. They do not care about your wellbeing. If you get on the ships then you have a 50% chance (statistically) of being fired and being left in a port god knows where to fend for yourself. Your will only end up making about $1000 dollars a month if your are very lucky. My advice is stay as a therapist in your won country, save your money, then travel. Only when the cruise ship companies and steiner are forced to change will they ever do so.

Best of luck because if you do make the decision to go, then you are going to need it.

Thank you very much.

Buna.

Sunt Sandra din Sibiu, in primul rand vreau sa-ti zic felicitari ca ai reusit si succes in continuare! Chiar as aprecia si m-as bucura enorm daca mi-ai raspunde si daca am putea comunica, desi stiu ca tu probabil esti acum ocupata. Oricum eu o sa astept un reply de la tine :)

Mersi mult!
