I am considering bringing in another massage therapist into my wellness business. I would like to learn more about how to do this - charge room rental? Commission? If it matters, I operate in Iowa. Thanks!

You can do either one, depending on the therapist you bring in. The easiest is room rental. You don't have to "trust" that your new person is reporting all appointments honestly. He or she just keeps all payments and doesn't have to wait for a paycheck. It also cuts down on work for you.

On the other hand, commission is good for a new therapist who does not have a clientele and might have difficulty paying for room rental at first.

At my clinic I did both, although I prefer the simpler rental method. Experienced therapists with clientele started off renting right away. I paid inexperienced therapists 60% commission until they built up a clientele, at which point we switch to rental.

Whatever you do, have a written contract! That way there is no question about the arrangement. You'd be surprised at honest misunderstands that inevitably occur without the details spelled out in a contract.

You have to check your laws about hiring people on a percentage basis as it can be sometimes considered to be illegal if they are independent contractors. I think it is supposed to be better if the are employees on a commission.

Check with an attorney to make sure and figure out the status of employee or subcontractor.
I have some basic info on one of my sites that will help you figure out what questions you will need to ask.
