There are jobs, unfortunately there way in the middle of nowhere and relocating is what a lot of masseuses end up doing that is if they don't quit massage and try another career. |

I heard the same thing more than 2 years ago when I finished school. There are many day spas here in Texas. However, they pay their therapists between $8 and $12 for a one hour massage and expect them to have their own malpractice insurance. So I had to keep my day job and work on a practice of my own on weekends and nights. Crazy, isn't it? Plus the spas expect you to work long hours on the weekends instead of being home with your family when they are there. I went into massage thinking I could work while my kids were in school and be there for them when they came home but it has not worked out like that.

Otheo in Bridgewater, New Jersey said: I just completed school and cant find work, where are all the jobs that my school was telling me about. They are all lies. When I hear the commercials making unrealistic promises it sickens me. I have been a Med. Massage therapist (as if theres a difference; another lie!) for close to six years now and have gone as far as to relocate in effort to practice my craft to no avail. The commercials direct training toward former welfare recipients and single mothers which allows employees to feel that everyone is the same so you should be greatful to make $9.-$13. an hour when they make $65.an hour easily off of your labor. I agree with the person who stated that you should go into business for yourself if that is an option for you. Other than that forget the promises you were given they don't exist. SORRY |

I am sorry to hear about the bad spot everyone seems to be in. I am here to tell you to keep positive...they are out there. I found a job at a great spa in Portland Maine two weeks after I graduated. I have medical/dental and vacation benefits and I make a percentage of the cost of the session (averages about $30 an hour) granted its not 65, but I see the cost of going into business for oneself and they roughly compare after taxes. Excellent jobs are out there, just don't let yourself get frustrated, the negative energy will only attract more negative results. |

The new Massage Envy is hiring and it's in New Jersey. The $ may not be the best but it's better than nothing. Find a job at a spa while you work on getting your own clients. Good Luck and be positive about!!As Cass from Maine said negative energy will only attract negative results. YOU WILL FIND A JOB- BEST WISHES!! |

LMT in Garland, Texas 26 months ago |
I too have found employment as a Licensed Massaged therapist, just days after rec'g my license. I work for Massage Envy, a few miles from my home. Yeah, the money is not that great, but it's a good way to practice the craft and become more experience as I prepare to move into business for myself in the near future. |

I've been looking myself, but might you know of any available massage therapy positions in Portland or the surrounding areas? |
|
Cass in Portland, Maine 26 months ago |
I don't know if they are hiring yet but there is a new spa opening on Fore Street in Portland Maine called Sartori Spa. They are directly across the street from where Akari is now (not where they are moving to) Good Luck |

I think that the schools marketing departments capitalize on the hopes of young impressionable unemployed students to make $1,000 a week. I get calls all the time from massage graduates looking for jobs that pay $1,000 a week. Unfortunatley... the only way that will happen is if you work for yourself & market yourself. Greg Sawyer

One thing that I can suggest is to contact small chiropractors in your area and ask them if they would like to offer your services 1 to 2 days a week each. This is a good starting point to get experience with while you build your business. Here is the most important thing though...
Too many practioners leave this to the admin people. When they leave that place after a few years they leave with few if any clients. Keep the contact info yourself. Greg Sawyer

I believe that the reason why jobs pay therapist so cheap.is they don't do any research when looking for a job. so they end up taking some low under paying job. Personally my thought is anything less then $20 an hr the therapist is being taking advantage off. If these people stop taking jobs at $8-10 and actually do some looking before jumping into something. There would be more of a demand to be met. |

I have a different problem. I am the employer and have a difficult time finding therapists. I don't know where to advertise the job posting. Any suggestions? I am suppling all equipment/supplies, and offering a fair commission. |

Well i would really go check out local massage events and try to get involved with the massage community and talk to as many LMT as you can. |

Interesting you say to keep a list of client information yourself. A friend of mine recently received a letter his former employer's attorney, claiming that, by keeping client info, he was in violation of HIPAA laws and has threatened to file suit. How is that possible? Especially considering the clients personally provided the contact information directly to the massage therapist. |

I suggest contacting the local massage schools that resonate with your mission in the business they can always be of help. Also craigslist.org is a pretty popular means of advertisement out this way, I don't know about Michigan, but that could be a good way to attract therapists who are looking to relocate. kjb in Commerce Township, Michigan said: I have a different problem. Wow, I didn't know everyone else out there went through the same crap that I did. When I first got out of school I worked for Massage Envy and The Massage Co for $9/hr to pay my bills. I then started up and out call business Millenium Massage & Fitness and targeted the Hotels. By working at the Mansion in Turtle Creek I met Dean Ferring and my clientel started to build by work of mouth. As for as good money for your craft before you can stand on your own, go to a chiropractor. I work for Cedar Springs Chiropractic for $45/hr from 9a-6p and work my out calls around that. If anyone out there needs healp, feel free to contact me. I know how hard it can be. |

Massage Therapy, Interior Design, Real Estate, Independant Contractor and similar "Titled" positions are jobs that you do by either starting your own "GROUP" or Marketing yourself Individually. Fat chance if you think you'll be making easy big bucks working in Retail or Strip Shopping center environment. It's the one in a zillion that would make $$$$$ in an Employee hired position. However, If you post an e-mail you might randomly have someone find you long after you've forgotten your post. Good Luck |

Tacky Response in Frisco, Texas 24 months ago |
I am not in the Therapy industry. I am forever amazed at the intensity of the negative comments from people in the industry. It is in such contrast to your Healing industry mindset training. In general, every industry has issues all the time or some of the time as supply & demand ebbs & flows. EVERY industry requires ADVERTISING & MARKETING. Whether that is word or mouth from your excellent superior service or from printed paid by you ADS you must advertise. As a NEW start-up or a fledging on financially you might try simply posting 3 x 4 colored general paper printed on a laser printer mini-ADS that you make yourself. Post them in anywhere that people go. Hand them out freely. This actually works better than posting a business card in many cases. Did you know that Borders Books (in my area) has a board to post any such things + business cards? |

First of all to all therapist out their, Don't work for massage envy they are crooks they will never pay you your worth. Second its hard to get work out their thats a fair share in the percentage area of pay. third its not easy as people say to start your own business. I notice alot of people say work for yourself but its not as easy as it sounds. Good luck to all who try |
|
Jobs in Frisco, Texas 24 months ago |
Nope. It's not easy to start a business. Also the start-up cost are prohibitive to many people who don't yet have a income or savings. It's been well documented in this forum that Massage Envy & others don't pay well. I'm surprised most of these People didn't find the real pay level out PRIOR to paying for Therapy school. If you feel that cheated out there & as many of you can't stand Massage Envy & similar businesses..... turn it around on them. Do a bit of work for them & become personal friends-business with the incoming clients.....give 'em your contact info on the side. In the mean time, work for them & distribute your own cards & simple flyers. I would assume that Massage Envey & such should be used as a stepping-stone or "entry-level" job while you get off the ground with your own private clients. If you want to be tipped well - Do a Superior Job at massage, relaxation environment & customer care.... with Wealthy Customers! They will tip you GREAT during the Holidays. I once worked for a Fortune 500 who took the Outside Sales Team as a group team building Holiday gift to a Massage & Make-up retail place. |

I agree with the person who stated that you should go into business for yourself if that is an option for you. As a clinic owner, it amazes me that people think that "we" make $65 per hour. That's just not true once we factor in our overhead. The therapist is just required to show up & do his/her job well to get paid. As owners, we're required to do extensive marketing just to get you the clients. We're not netting $65 per hr. If you'd like to make more money as a therapist, then you must assume more risk. That is the trade-off. As an employee, you've opted for a low-risk environment with some job security (i.e. you're guaranteed a paycheck). If you worked for yourself, then the rewards would be greater. My therapist pays me 30% as an IC because she uses my space. It works if you focus on the positive! Since whatever you focus on expands, then all that negativity only creates more of it. Always focus on the positive. |
