I worked in master control 20 yr. ago. I would like to get back into it. How has the technology changed and what do I need to do to work in it again. |

Most stations have eliminated tape playback for air. Programs & commercials are ingested to a server using various media; Tape, dvd, FTP (file transfer protocol)and program delivery services through websites. Be familiar with computers and Windows programs. FCC transmitter logs haven't changed much. My #1 suggestion to anyone looking to become an MCO is to study the materials provided by the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE.org). Take the Certified Broadcast Technologist exam. This will give you some credibility to get an interview even if you have no experience. Sadly, MCO jobs don't pay that much. Entry level might be less than $10/hr and require newer hires to work overnights and weekends. |

I worked in Master control 25 years ago when it was a real job, when you needed an FCC license to operate, when knowledge, dedication, hard work, common sense, and pride were a job requirement. I got out of it for 15 years, when I came back technology had improved made the work so easy any baboon can be hired to do the job, at our station a high school diploma isn't even needed, after over 11 years I am the senior operator, top pay at a whopping 11.35 an hour. No one cares what the on air signal looks or sounds like as long as you don't lose any money, you better be prepared to take the blame for EVERYTHING that goes wrong, because it will be your fault if money is lost no matter why it is lost. Ssoooo if you are willing to work long hours for slave wages, never have a holiday off, don't give a $hit about the quality of product you are putting on the air, and don't mind being screamed at by everyone, being the bottom of the life chain then get back into master control. I suggest you find something else myself |
