Good comment. Sometimes that is the only thing to do,find a job at an assistant living facility that will train you. Then you will have patient experience that may help with finding an MA job.

Hi Ceetee:
CONGRATULATIONS! In finding employment, that's great. As for myself, I'm doing some customer service work and it's okay for now, but not for long. Tomorrow I'm going to another school for Nurses Assistant to see what they offer. Because the school I graduated from we really didn't learn that much. All we learn was how to make up the different types of beds surgical, occupied, and unoccupied, and the rest of the semester we saw films and had tests, that's it. I'm glad for you because it's really hard finding the kind of job you want. Being CERTIFIED helps as well, it's really what they're looking for. Ceetee learn all you can learn girl, take it to the bank! I live in New York and have plans to want to move back home someday, I'm from Georgia. My nephew lives in Jacksonville and I got some cousins there from my father side of the family. Good luck. Prayer works!

Hi Ceetee:
Thanks for responding. Here in New York it takes (30) days before you know you pass the CNA exam. I'm going to prepare myself to take it once again. I really need to get CERTIFIED. The person at the Allen school told me that I'm not going to get hired unless I'm CERTIFIED. I have an Associates degree in Medical Assistant. The next testing exam is July 26, 2008. Out of 200 questions you have to get 114 right. How was your test! Ethel

Hi Ceetee:
Thanks for responding. I figure that the Nursing Assistant test would be easier, cause it's not that many questions. This test I have to take is called a test for Nurse Technicians. The test consist of 200 questions, out of it you must get 114 right, and it comes in three parts, 1. the heart and its functions, phlebotomy and its functions, ekg and its functions, plus you must know an extensive amount about the heart, phlebotomy, and the positve and negative sides of doing ekg's. Then there's other questions such as the different positions, prone, supine, trendelenburg etc. In between that there's other questions such as patient care. If you pass the test it takes (30) days before you'll know if you pass. If you do pass, you get CERTIFIED for phlebotomy, EKG, And Nurses Assistant. They're not making it easy for you here in New York. I was told that the Medical Assistant test is hard also. Thanks for giving me good luck. I know I'm going to have to study like its no tomorrow. It's just something I wanted to let you know. Continue to keep up the good work and try not to work too hard, okay. Ethel

Hi Ceetee:
Do you think they would? No! But you can go to their website, it's www.nha.now. They even have their own personnel. Plus you can join in and become a member of their website for a small fee. They have a lot of offers in different states also. I went on a nurses assistant interview back in February and took a little test of maybe about (30) questions. I passed that test. That test was in no way compared to this test with the NHA.
It's the National Healthcareers Association. They test is harder. Next test exam is July 26, 2008, at 9:00a.m. to 1:00 p.m. To me it is not considered a Nurses Assistant test. I guess that's why they call it a Nurse Technician test. But it's still a Nurses Assistant. Patient Care Associate, what's the difference. Ethel

Hi Ceetee:
Well taking the State exam may differ in your State. Plus there's some fees involve. You know nothing is free these days with these people. First time around you'll have to pay $149.50 depending on the profession. Then when you pass you'll be certified for all (3). Nurse Technician, EKG, and Phlebotomy. I saw another person wrote on this forum a month or two ago saying, for $40 more dollars they request that you pay for the other (2). If you should fail on the first attempt, then you get to take it again for the price of $52.00 only twice. After that it goes back to $149.50. The book for the test cost $89.00. It's www.nha.now, the National HealthCareers Association. I don't think the test is all that hard. You just have to study and apply yourself. You could pass this test. Now that I have taken the test before and failed it, I know what I have to do. Because I kept some of the questions in my head. It's questions like, What does post grandiem mean? What does per diem means? I never heard of the word post grandiem before, so I kept the question in my head and looked up the word. Then there's a question about the prone position and the supine position with a picture inside the test booklet. There's patient care questions, EKG questions about positive and negative, depolarization, the QRS wave, the T wave, repolarization etc. Then there's heart questions, about the aorta, the pulmonary, the entire function of the heart, cardiac arrythmia, etc. Then there's phlebotomy questions. There's 200 questions and it's definitely a challenge. You must get 114 right. You get to review one week before the test for (4) hours. It's July 26, 2008. Ethel

Hi Ceetee:
It's okay, you can still leave the city for some years. People does it all the time. I want to do it myself. As you know it takes time and money. It a lot of timing and planning. If you feel that you have a better chance at making it in another State, with the job market being good, then go for it. Your CNA license should be good anywhere you go. But ask questions first and do some soul searching okay. Because in some States they may want you to take another CERTIFICATION in order to work in their State. Once you have gained all the hands on experience, and feel you want to move on to learn even more, do it. Because you deserve to make more money. I just wanted you to know about the National Healthcareers Association. Ethel!

Hi Joaquin:
With the exception of externship it would be great to accept someone who has graduated already and is preparing to take the State board exam to become certified.
Hi Joaquin:
With the exception of externship, specify that you're looking for someone who is certified. Otherwise I am a person who loves children. I'm a foster parent since 2005 and is great with children. I am licensed and have a certificate of appreciation in caring for the children. I'm adopting a little girl at the end of July, she's been with me since she was one week old, and she's two years old now. I have received many compliments from the foster care agency caseworkers and from other parents on how I take care of the children. I graduated from ASA in July 2007 and is currently seeking employment as a Medical Assistant or Nurses Assistant. I'm currently preparing myself to take the State board exam July 26, 2008 hopefully to become certified. I've been on several interviews for employment as a Nurses Assistant and Medical Assistant and I must get certified.
I feel that I would be a great candidate for your self starter position but I'm not certified. Ethel

Hi Ceetee:
When you get a chance, check out the Medical Staffing Network, and Intel Staffing Network. They have great options, but you must have one year experience in order to work with them. These staffing networks are nationwide and will relocate you also. They have Nurses Assistant positions. Just something I wanted to share with you. Their benefits are great. Ethel

I am back looking to get a medical assisting job. I am certified and registered with AMT. I have been out of medical assisting for 5 years (raising children). No one wants to hire me with such a long duration of being out of it. I had kept up with the phlebotomy part of it giving factor to a hemophelia child. What do I need to do to get back into this?

Hi Marie:
Hello please to write you, my name is Ethel, and I live in New York City. Girl it's hard, but being that you're certified it shouldn't be a problem. There are many websites to go into for medical assistant positions. There's indeed.com, medical staffing network, intel staffing, and there is a medical assistant website. Most of all try a temporary agency first, because I guess you have to get your feet back in the door. With your experience and with being certified someone should give you a chance. You know they're gonna ask you about the GAP in your resume. Before they hire you they're want to make sure that you won't take off for a long period of time again. Sometimes it's best to say you don't have children, but you can't do that. As for myself all I have is internship training. I trained in 2006, and its as far as I got. Right now I'm focusing on studying to get myself certified. I take the test at the end of this month. Right now a temporary agency will probaly be your best offer. Is Lawrenceville a a big size town? Otherwise you may have to go to a town that has more opportunities. There's a Lawrenceville, New York, it's right before you get to Far Rockaway, New York. Anyway try playing around with the word Medical Assistant. I'm sure someone will give you a chance. The medical staffing network and intel staffing network want you to have at least one year experience to work with them. They have great opportunities. I'm from Georgia myself. Good luck. I hope you get employed, you deserve to. Ethel

Hi Joaquin:
Yes I live in Brooklyn, in the East New York section. You're right it is a bit of a commute. I don't know anything about White Plains, New York. I had a cousin who passed away in November 2007 who lived in Mt. Vernon and never been to her house. Right now I'm focusing on trying to get certified and is studying to prepare myself to take this test at the end of this month. Thanks for responding and thinking of me. I'm going to call you, okay! Thanks, Ethel.

Hi Dede:
Sometimes relocation does help if the State you're living in doesn't have a lot of opportunities. On the other hand it all depend on where you get sent to do your internship as well. Most MA's get hired from their internship. You work and learn all that you can learn and move on especially if the salary isn't that great. Most of the time employers want people who is certified. As for myself I'm studying and preparing myself to take the State board exam. All I have is internship training as of 2006. I live in New York City and graduated in 2007 as a medical assistant/nurses assistant with a degree, and have tried to get a job in the medical field, plus the school counselor tried for me as well. But wherever I go they want you to be certified. I take the test at the end of this month. After I become certified, I'm going to a temporary agency. I still have another interview I haven't completed yet. I'll just wait until I'm certified. It's not that easy for some of us. Some employers look for a lot of experience and some of us don't have that. Who's going to hire me with only internship training. The facility I was training in didn't need anyone. Look on some of the websites for different States and see the kind of experience they want. We just have to stay positive thinking. Ethel

I graduated from MA school last year, still not working. Reading some of the reports I see I'm not the only one that was confused from what I should have expected during externship. I wasn't shown what to do, it was expected that I already knew what to do, so I felt so inadequate and my self confidence went out the window. I especially felt I needed more experience in phlebotomy and exposure to mixing meds for injections. most of what I got to do during extern is vitals, room patients, answr phones, filing, faxing prescriptions ( the things they can throw a person into without a lot of input from staff. I didn't have just one preceptor per site, either, there were several different people telling me what to do, not any one to guide me. I worked few times at a temp agency, that hasn't been easy at all because they expect me to know how to do everything and I don't, so they get upset when you ask questions. Most of the places I have been assigned to, doesn't explain what or how they do things, many times I weren't even shown where the bathroom or lunchroom were at, or if and what to do for lunch time. I know I would be good if given an opportunity and a little guidance. How does one get the experience? Is there a place in Indianapolis to take refresher courses? Study group for certification? Thanks for letting know I'm not the only one with bad experience, I had begun to think it was all my fault, that I should have known what and how to do everything from the beginning. I did have 2 people from Aegis that was very kind and helpful when I asked questions. Also one temp assignment at Wishard was enjoyed because of a caring person.

Hi MK:
Well join in with the rest of us who hasn't founded employment yet. The thing is that, we didn't pick the right schools, and weren't sent to the right medical sites to do our externships. As for me, I was sent to a very small facility to do my externship. I didn't get hired because the doctors didn't needed anyone. Plus one doctor had his son coming in to help after he would get out of school. I expected to learn a lot more but the doctor never got around to teaching me. Only thing you can do now is see if you can get certified. I plan to take the State board exam at the end of this month. Secondly, try to take on another skill. It's what I did. Right now I have Medical Assistant on hold and is taking the state board exam for Nurses Assistant. These people does state testing all around. It's the www.nhanow.com or national healthcareers association. No one is going to hire you with only internship training. I'm out of school since 2006. MK, don't limit yourself. Get another skill and go for the challenge of it. Don't let it be a long type of skill to learn. Let it be a (1)month or no more than a(3) month skill. Nurses Assistant was a (5) week course, and customer service was a (1) month course. Be proud of yourself that you did something very rewarding. In the end it will pay off. Continue to stay in touch with different temporary agencies, they might could help you. The sad part about it is that the school counselor that's in charge of getting you work after graduation can't help you. All the interviews I went on they all would ask me if I was certified. So I just stop with all the interviews and made the decision to get myself certified. So keep your head up and continue to further yourself into higher levels of learning. Your not alone. Focus on getting yourself certified. Also see if your school have training sessions where you can continue to train, or look for some volunteer training. Ethel

I hope Ashley (original post) and others who commented have by now found suitable positions in their medical specialties. Getting jobs can be tough, but there is one way which seems to smooth everyone's (employers & employees) anxiety. That way is to give everyone a 'trial' period through a temorary work assignment before a situation is made permanent. I am of course suggesting a placement through a temporary agency. For travel nurse job give www.RNVip.com a try. And for travel health jobs try www.RNVip.com These websites are run by the same company and are free to the applicant and can offer opportunities for assignments almost anywhere in the USA.

Thank you, Ethel, for responding. I am going to check into CNA training, hoping to just get my foot in door. I have 23 years of customer service experience going for me (I worked in banking, from a teller, call center, research, and accounts payable. My job was sent off shore to India in 2005).
I would like to change to a medical career.

Hi Mk:
Thanks for responding back. Well as for me I just started in the customer service field. I also went to school to become a medical assistant. I'm hoping to get employed as a nurses assistant. Meanwhile I've been thinking about taking some online courses to further my career in the medical field. I'd like to go for getting a Bachelor's degree in health administration at a later date. Good luck in the medical field. I hope you expand your career also. You deserve it. I think it's good to have more than one skill. Respond back when you get a chance. Ethel

I know what you are talking about. Go on the web type in Medical Assistant there is a web site that is for MA's. Red Cross also has classes for phlebotomy and it's not expensive. I know what you mean about more schooling. I actually had a call from a girl that tried to push me to keep going to school. That only ticked me off. Hang in there and good luck.

Rhonda, Hi,I had the experience of doing my externship where there was one MA that for whatever reason, didn't care for me.I'm usually a likeable person but she acted like she didn't want to waste her time with me. And when the head MA would have me follow a Dr.that one of the girls usually was with, the MA's would be mad because they would be put on phones for the day.So I was in the middle. I had to do 225 hours there, and I couldn't wait to get done. It seemed like a long time before I got a job but really it was only 2 months.I found a place that the office manager said she feels like everyone needs a chance. But the office is non-stop, so she never really has alot of time to train me.But I was thinking when I read your letter,I wonder if you found a office where they could use a extra hand for you to volunteer for awhile to get some experience, and once they saw whatkind of a worker you were they would hire you? Just a thought, Good luck & try not to get to discouraged! Tammy

that easy go to the clinic. The hospital will pass you up for experience. The clinic or health dept will be a better place to start off.
