Hi, I went for MA 5 years ago and there are still no jobs so I would suggest billing/coding because everyone is going electronic. If you have a choice and help go for nursing, that is my next step. Good luck. MA course is a moneysukker if they do not place you.

Thats not true that you will have a set job after extern. I graduated a year ago from medical assisting and still nothing. Now my area is not hiring medical assistants unless your bilingual and i'm not. But the school has also not called me nor emailed me with jobs like they promised to do. Don't do it unless you know there are jobs in your area or your willing to move to another state.

I would not say don't do your MA because if your doing it with a reputable school at least you will have acquired some credits, I would advise others to think carefully before doing it as there seem to be a great deal of difficulty in getting the opportunity to do your externship/internship, also a lot of people are not finding jobs. I would do it and take those credits to do my RN.

I WENT TO MA SCHOOL 4 YRS AGO AND YES ITS HARD FINDING A JOB BUT IF U DO APPLY FOR A JOB IN THIS FIELD GO FOR THE SPECIALIST THEY PAY MORE THAN A REGULAR INTERNIST, SPEC START U OFF AT 14-16 AN HR AND INTERNIST 10-12 THE MOST. I STICK TO THE SPECIALIST, BUT YES BILLING AND CODING IS HARD BUT THATS THE MONEY MAKER.

I have graduated with an Associate Degree in Medical Assisting and I've worked from April to February 09 but since then I can't find a job at all!!! I don't think MA is a great choice to get into but I would recommend Billing and Coding cause they make about 19 to 21 dollars an hour in a hospital setting...I'm going back to school for that too and the things I've heard about the field is really good!!!

Good luck

Kay,
I am considering starting MA classes. I'm forty years old and have been raising a family and now it's time for me to do something for myself. The medical field has always interested me. I actually went to college out of HS and received my associates degree in science but then started a family and never finished my BS degree. Then I was going for elementery education but I'm interested in medical assisting now. My question to you Is how difficult are the classes? How much out of class time does it take? I just don't want to start something I can't finish!! Thanks

You gotta be kidding me. I get online evety day and each time i get on there is atleast 2 or more job openings thats a day In the state of Michigan there are 390 job openings a year and still growing and we are a poor state I dont know about the others but you can go to O'Net and it will tell you. Im currently taking Ma classes and everybody around the local hospitals are telling me its a good choice because non like some cna's you can draw blood give meds and injections in the classes im taking they teach codeing. But really not every state is the same. And so far the classes are not that hard.Hope this helped but everyone is intitled to there own opinion.

Hi there, When you are almoxt done with your MA program I would start putting your resume and let the the future employer know how good you would be for them and alot of times the place where you do your externship will hire you. You also must make your out shine all the other MA's out there. You can not give up if you don't get hired right away and you have to go to Doctor's offices and must be able to go out of your way sometimes like having to go to work in another from where you live. In the Houston area there are lot's of Medical Assistant jobs and a lot of them will require at least 1 year of experience and you put in some free time in one of the Hospitals in area that counts as experience and your externship also counts towards on the job experience. I hoped helps.

Don't waste your time with LPN because now a days medical assistant are being hired to do LPN jobs and are getting paid way better.Oh and to build your experience you can volunteer at medical facilities and add that on to your resume , just explain your situation.

Hi there, I just read your post. Since you do not what to do with your life, may I suggest going into the Military. You can learn a good trade and you can help others and serve your country. If you are going into Medical Assisting thinking you going to make a lot of money than your in the wrong place.

Hello?! People, WAKE UP! Don't you know there is an economic DEPRESSION going on in our country and millions of people are unemployed, losing everything that they have worked for FOR YEARS!?

Why are you surprized that there are no jobs? There are no nursing jobs either!

If you are fortunate enough to find ANYTHING, well then congratulations!

Meanwhile, go into MA if it interests you and you think you will like the work. You won't get rich at it and no, you won't be doing the same thing nurses do.

If you want that role in healthcare the go into nursing!

I'm starting school this week for medical assistant, after hearing so many negative comments I'm not sure this is the right choice. Is it too late for me to change my mind, maybe i should start lpn classes instead. I'll take any positive advice:o)

saunders it is up to you and your school if it is too late to change. Given the choice I'd rather do LPN b/c it opens up more job opportunities to you but clinics often still will hire LPNs to work doing the same back office work as MAs.

If you go MA: You are just going to have to work really hard at networking and selling yourself and if your extern site offers you a job you should likely take it unless you have something better guaranteed. Its easier to get a job when you already have one.

Nurses are having a rough time finding jobs too right now.

Good luck to you.

M/A is a waste of both time and money! Especially here in Florida! they inflate the schools, there are 5 schools within a 25 mile radius of me teching M/A's and they accept ANYONE into their programs! so think about it every single month a new M/A class in each school, sounds a n=bit ridiculous to me, and of ALL those students how many of them are really going to get jobs? Not in this are, so unless you are going to move to an area hiring, i suggest you go for R/N, which os what im doing now.

Alot of people suggest to do the RN but its easyer said than done you cant just go into the RN program without first thinking about the money and loans it takes to do it and the amount of time to do it. Right now yes it is hard to find a MA job its NOT easy. Here in CA there isnt really any at all and they all want experience. If the medical career you want to be in then do it just put in the fact experience is everything I wish they really ment "equal opportunity in the medical field" Because in reality they dont live up to that saying if they dont give you the opportunity to do so.

Very sorry you got sucked into enrolling at Medvance. I'd recommend anyone stay clear of this school. Not worth the time or money, and I'm saying this from attending their medical billing program for 11 months. Been finished for 4 months, and still NO JOB. Maybe its partly the economy, but the other part is from employers not holding Medvance in very high regard.

Well, I should say there are non in the Treasure Coast area of Florida right now. Are you in Bay Pines? That might be a better area than this area is. Near St Pete, right? We have a high elderly population over here on the east coast too, but there are so many of these private institutions getting people to enroll in the MA and Billing/Coding programs that its saturating the market with too many people trying to get those jobs! I know in general the job market really sucks right now, but I thought I was doing the right thing. Do you do an externship at the end of your program? if so, maybe they will hire you if you work out well for them and IF they are hiring. I was hoping for that myself but the place I did externhip at was not hiring:( I really hope you find something! I'm taking a call center job for now until I can get something else.
