Well I got my certificate in December at Health Care Training in Mass. still no job, I barely get called for interviews and if I do, they either want two years or better experience, or you need to be bi-lingual....(ya right), I have resumes everywhere, most of the jobs I see now are for CNA'S, and I'm not about to go back to school so I can wipe someone's ass, What a total waste of my time.
Who ever is concidering MA as a career.....think again. Try Nursing, at least your guarenteed to find work. Good Luck to All

I am 57 and semi-retired. I was thinking of training to be a medical assistant, and have actually met with the admissions counselor at Everest College in San Jose, CA. Today, my unemployment counselor asked me to contact another of his clients who had graduated from Everest College as a M.A. before I decided to make the investment. I called her, and she gave me the same feedback that I'm seeing on this forum! She graduated with a 4.0 GPA in October'07, and still hasn't found a job yet! And she said that most of them only want to pay minimum wage! I'm so glad that I was able to discover this BEFORE I invested $15K to get my M.A. certification, and then not be able to get a job. I thought this would be an up and coming career as "us" baby boomers are about to retire, but I guess not. Anyone know of a better career to pursue which will provide more opportunites?

From what I'm hearing, You'd be better off getting a nursing career, I am 51 years old and finished getting my certificate in MA back in December. Still no job, I live in Mass. and what I am finding is that they want all kinds of experience, 2 or more years, or an associates degree. (like I'd go for 2 years to make 10.00 an hour...haha). Anyway how the heck are you supposed to gather experience if no one gives you that first chance. I was concidering going back to get my LPN license, but at my age, by the time I finish, It'll be time for retirement, no thank you. don't let these school fool you, its all about the money. good luck to you.

Like I said in my note, I have been very lucky, I think it all depends on the state you live in. Here in Ms. CMA are in demand in clinic settings I work for a family Dr. and earn $15.00 hr. I do everything I am his only nurse, in Georia CMA's are in demand but not in Florida, keep at it there is not much else you can do unless you go back to school and add another school loan, a reputable school should have your resumes on hand in their resouce dept. with names and numbers of potential employers ask to veiw that, that way you will know that they are wotking for you.

Well obviously I didn't go to a reputable school. It was a 7 month course, and once your done, they don't help one bit in finding you a job, nor do they even assist you. I am looking for 200 hours of free labor as a medical assistant. What should I do?

The school is supposed to put you in the externship, I did 240 hours at Granite Medical in Quincy Mass. It was a great place but the school set it up.

Jennifer Chu in San Francisco, California said: They do lie to us on the TV ads about guaranteed employment after completing the Medical Assisting Program at Cabrillo College or Bryman College. I graduated in 1999 and it took four months to get a job. I worked for Pulmonary Specialists and in Family Practice. Now after not working for two years these employers require that you be bilinguel. That is a bunch of crap, if i wanted to learn how to speak spanish i would move to Mexico. What is up with that?

I know what you all are talking about. This field was booming, back in the 80's and 90's; today it seems to be a different story. I went to school in 1977 to become a Medical Assistant. I was lucky to have worked for a great doctor who saw with my personality I would be better suited, working as a Phlebotmist within a hospital. He was right! I did that for many years, then I was offered a great job by one of the doctors on staff at the hospital.

I was out of the Medical field for 6 years. Now I am finding it really difficult. Funny, they seem happy I have all the lab/phlebotomy skill, yet there seems to be some new game, or set of rules I must not know now. It use to be pretty straight forward, with the interviewing process. Now, as the original writer suggests, you need to be bi-lingual. I see she is in California too. I am not sure if this is the same for other states. I see the need for it, yet to exclude other's who are only English speaking doesn't seem fair.

I am thinking of looking into more of the business end of my field.

I think it would be good to find a speacilty that is useful and sets you apart. I wish I had some good things to say. I hope our field comes around. I feel bad for the new kids on the block who are finding out it isn't all that they promised.

Can someone say, "class-action lawsuit?"

What about being a Medical Coder? Look into that one. Also, I am not sure but it sure seems like they are more willing to hire Medical Billers. You really need to look into which field is in demand. I have seen the pay for the Coders....WOW!

I am a baby-boomer and as far as the age gig goes, everything is different then when we were young.

What about signing up with a Temp Agency? Believe it or not, there are doctors who like it when they have M.A.'s fresh out of school. They want to be able to train them "Their" way. One thing, if you can take a class, where you can get your License in Phlebotomy, this will help make you more marketable. I have been a Phleb. for many years, yet, because I have been out of the field, and didn't take the test...I have to start all over again with the Phleb. class. Oh well. I have to tell you, the Red Cross needs Medical Assistants, for their Mobile units. They are so desperate, they could pay for you to be licensed. Call the Red Cross. Their training is 12 weeks, yet they will pay you during that time. Also, if you are not close to their main offices, they will pay for you to stay in a hotel, food allowence, and mileage.

I wish I could have done it, but I am a single Mom and can't leave my 12 year-old alone. Check it out.

I live in Southern CA. Another thing...look on "Craigslist.com" you will find jobs there. You also might find a job within a hospital and or Urgent Care.

Let me know if I can offer any more wonderful information. LOL!

You are 100% right. My advisor told me great stories about this career but I found out there are no jobs at all specially in NH in Medical assistant or they want to give you only 30 hours a week with no health coverage. If I have to do it again, I would change my major.

Alice, I agree with you. I am paying my college loan for 2 years and so far I have not got a job yet. I come from NH too, and the market is very bad. They need a lot of nurses, but no medical assistants and you don't get enough money for that either. Maybe $12 an hour with no full benefits.

You should be worried, go to your school, tell them you need to be placed , did you click on the link to the 60 minute story I posted ? I would go to a lawyer, bring the 60 minute story that was aired in 2005, and all your paperwork from your school. Find a lawyer for a free initial consultation. You might be able to get your tuition money refunded. Part of your course work includes externship, provided by your school. They are waisting your time, get out while you still can, possibly. Go see a lawyer and e-mail me back, good luck !

In nearly every other country on Earth, it is expected that one is at least bi-lingual.....usually they are proficient in ENGLISH. Why is it that Americans think they are so special that they cannot participate in the global community? Whether people like it or not, Mexico is part of North America just like the U.S. is, and many people living here speak Spanish. If people are getting all bent out of shape because people prefer job applicants who are bi-lingual, then go take a crash course in Spanish for Health Professionals and get on with your life and career! There are way to many comments on here that entail people whining about how no one will hire them because they don't speak Spanish. Just my $0.02....

It is really hard finding jobs right now, even for people who have experience. One suggestion is to get a letter of recommendation from the doctor you are now temping for. Also, if you are friendly with the office manager, ask her if she might also write a letter of recommending you as well.

I have found that these types of letters are soooo important. That way a future employer will see that not only have you worked, and appiled your classroom education to real life, but they will see that the reason you didn't work very long, is it really was a "Temp." position.

Did you get this job through an agency? You need to sign up with as many different employment agencies as you can. You might also take a phlebotomy class. Have you checked with hospitals close to you? There are jobs within hospitals that need people familar with medical terminology to work in Patient Admitting, ER Admiting, and maybe even hospital ward secretary. This way you are in the medical field, and you will gain a ton of experience with the different departments and various types of patients.

Also, you will meet doctors who you might want to snatch you up for their office. I left a hospital job once for a doctor.

Just a thought. What about Urgent Care, or Clinics. I hate to say, because I know how we all need money, but you could volunteer at a Free Clinic, where you are working side-by-side with other doctors and nurses. This is another way to beef up your resume and network. Remember, ALWAYS ger letters of recommendation from people in the medical field. Did you get one from the doctor you did your internship with. If not, go back and or call the office manager and request one. They usually don't mind.

I don't know if I told you or someone else, the Red Cross is a good place to work. They will put you through their training of about 9 or 12 weeks, and you are paid for this. You can work their mobile units as a Medical Assistant doing vitals. Call them.

Thank you for the feedback. I applied to Massasoit...but there is a waiting list. I am trying to change fields. I have a Bachelors degree in elementary education. The job market for education is extremely competetive. The last thing I want to do is get into another field that has no jobs. What do you think? I am finding that the Medical Assisting field is also competetive, I don't know how old you are, but if your young enough, I suggest that if you are going to go back to school, do RN or LPN. I finished school in Decenber and I'm still unemployed because for some reason they want you to have the experience and I don't know how you can get it if no one will give that first chance. I'm too old to keeo going back to school. So I hope this helps with your decision.
