HELP! I just finished schooling this past January and finished my externship the end of August. I've had two interviews in Medical offices but wasn't hired because I do not have enough experience. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what further steps I should take in order to land a job within the billing/coding or Medical Secretary field ? Thanks |

Mary, when looking for jobs online at places such as careerbuilder.com or monster.com search for the phrase "entry level". This way they will not ask for previous experience and you should start with better pay with your schooling background. James

Mary in Randolph, Massachusetts said: HELP! Good luck...I really don't think there are any entry level billing jobs out there--I myself was very mis-informed---no-one wants a biller without experience---I finished the course w/ a 96 average with means nothing. Best bet is to stick to looking for a receptionist/secretary job in a doctors office--where there is a chance to do some billing too. I''ve applied to tons of jobs since November and no luck, And also beware there are tons of "fake" jobs out there...scams...these places operate under 100's of different websites---Yahoo is one of the worst offenders for allowing these scammmers to post jobs. |

Maryann in Warwick, Rhode Island said: I am currently unemployed and looking for a medical billers position. I have Hi Mary Ann, Have you tried the local temporary agencies in your area? Also try the coding network. They are hiring remote coders. I saw the posting on the AAPC website. Also, believe it or not, some jobs are post on craigslist under healthcare. Be careful because some are scams, but most are legit. I was offered at job at a surgeons group where I live and it was posted on cragslist. Hope this helps. |

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that Medical Billing and Coding jobs will to increase by 20% in the next ten years. Hospitals across the nation are looking to hire workers just like you! WHERE IS THE TRUTH. THIS IS ANOTHER WMD HYPE |

Hospitals across the nation are looking to hire workers just like you! No, this is not a lie, myth or hype, this is accurate information. The problem is that it will only increase for experienced and certified coders and HIM personell. If you can get your foot in the medical door now, by time all of this comes about, you will be in a position to benefit from it. I have been coding for 6 years and I have realized that in order for me to benefit the most from this field, I need to expand my abilities and knowledge. So I am preparing for it now, to be ready in 2 years. This field is always expanding and changing and you have to be able to change with it. |

no single response will you even get from a recruiter or from an office willing to hire for 9 bucks a hour. where do you start when you are suppose to be experienced when you graduate form school. where do you even get the 2 years experience and letter from the ghost employer to write the certification exam. the fact is any time you see too much adverts about a program there is some big hidden information that will never be disclosed until you join it. has been the same with computers, nursing and even having a master degree in country. for me most of these specialized jobs are exceptionally for a category of people |

nick in Lawrenceville, Georgia said: no single response will you even get from a recruiter or from an office willing to hire for 9 bucks a hour. where do you start when you are suppose to be experienced when you graduate form school. This field is definitely over saturated and the schools mislead students about it, but I also feel that students are responsible to research a particular field as well before paying money for school. I am sorry but you are not experienced when you graduate school, these programs are very very basic, they just barely brush the surface of coding. Employers are requiring experience because they are wary to hand over revenue (one of the most important aspects of a clinic) to someone who just took 4 incredibly basic classes. Yeah, they want you to actually have some hands on experience, and you get that by starting at the bottom. Get a job in medical records, billing or front desk, gain experience and knowledge of ICD 9, CPT and reimbursement, then leverage it in a coding job. Perhaps if the schools had better and more indepth programs, employers would be more willing to hire new grads. |
