i have given warnings to people who i met at the career center when printing out my certificate, it more depressing when you graduate than when you did not know anything about Medical billing. this is the most and greatest hype a big trap waste of time resources and just a bridge no where i realized it the same for medical transcription too. its the same hype about America which made me rush here 7 years ago to be entrapped by almost every aspect of your life. learning to drive a truck or dozer has more prospects |

Thank you for reading my message. Volunteer at your local hospital....NO ONE hires entry level billers or coders....period....I got a job as a secretary and I love it----don't even want to do billing or coding...huge yearly expense w/ coding too. All these billing and coding programs are a bunch of b.s. Hope u didn't pay alot---thank God I didn't...just read the forums here and you will see the same frustration from everyone...sorry but this is what it is...like I said VOLUNTEER and you WILL get in!!! |

My son has been working for a company called Allegra Direct Communications for over a year now. It's an outsourced call center for BCBSM. They spent a whole month training him on ICD-9-CM, CPT, and HCPCS? I have been helping him seek another job since he is underpaid (less than $9/hr). Anyway,it might help some of you who have the online certification but want the experience. They trained him well--I can say that much! When he spouts off all the jargon, I am truly amazed. Hope this helps someone. Oh, btw- the HQ are in Clinton Twp. |

nick in Lawrenceville, Georgia said: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that Medical Billing and Coding jobs will to increase by 20% in the next ten years. Hospitals across the nation are looking to hire workers just like you! He is exactly right. I have been thinking about a coarse in medical billing. And guess what? When you actually look for a medical billing job there are almost none and the ones there are ALL want someone with experience. If you cannot get it then you are out in the cold. Wasted your time and money. IT IS a bunch of BS that there are these jobs out there. Maybe one or here and there and hundreds of people applying for these one or 2 jobs. Get real people. This sucks and the schools are lying through their teeth. |

This sucks and the schools are lying through their teeth. I won't deny that schools lie to prospective students to get them to buy into their education. But this field is a legitimate field that truly does have a shortage of experienced coders. The problem is that it can be hard to gain the necessary experience. But it is not impossible. Start somewhere else in HIM, something in medical records, billing, account follow up or data entry. Gain some much needed medical experience and become more familiar with ICD 9, CPT and reimbursement. Then you can start looking for an actual coding job. Revenue is the cornerstone to any clinic or hospital. they are not going to hand over their billing/coding to someone who doesn't have actual experience. With the ever increasing government audits and focusing on abuse and fraud, employers now have to be very careful who they hire, to ensure they will not cause unnecessary audits. |

HI MY NAME IS MICHELLE AND I LIVE IN MEMPHIS TENNESSEE.I'AM CERTIFIED AS A CLINIC ACCOUNT TECHNICIAN(BILLING ON THE CLINIC SIDE)AND I'AM ALSO CERTIFIED AS A CODING ASSOCIATE.I COMPLETED SCHOOL IN 2008 AND WENT RIGHT IN TO ACCEPTING A JOB AT A POST SECONDARY SCHOOL.I WAS HIRED AS A ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT,BUT LATER START TEACHING COMPUTERS,THE FUNDAMENTALS OF CODING AND CLAIM FORMS(CMS 1500& UB04).I HAVE BEEN DOING THAT FOR A PRETTY GOOD WHILE,SO I DECIDED TO GET MY CERTIFIED CODING ASSOCIATE CERTIFICATION JUST A COUPLE A MONTHS AGO,SO THAT I COULD FIND ME A JOB AS A BILLER OR CODER....BUT NO ONE TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD BE THIS HARD TO FIND A JOB IN THE MEDICAL FIELD WITHOUT EXPERIENCE.I REALLY THOUGHT THAT TAKING THE COURSE MEDICAL BILLING AND CODING AT A POST SECONDARY SCHOOL OR ANY SCHOOL WOULD BE A PART OF YOUR EXPERIENCE...BUT IT NOT,THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE AT LEAST SIX MONTHS TO A YEAR EXPERIENCE WORKING IN A MEDICAL SETTING, AND I DO NOT HAVE ANY I ONLY HAVE THE EXPERIENCE FROM SCHOOL.SO I THINK IT KINDA DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF TRYING TO TAKE A COURSE TO REACH YOUR GOAL....IT REALLY SUCKS |

Hello Michelle, I understand your situation. I finished school as a PTA but I'm not licensed. Licensure is expensive so therefore I need to find employment to pay for the examination. In the mean time, I was considering Medical Coding and have been doing some research on it. I'm confused as to what is the best way to go about it as far as school (classroom or online) and certification. Any pointers there you could give would be great. As far as your situation, I would suggest "getting your foot in the door" at a medical billing facility and then move on within. They are more willing to train you as a medical coder considering you are already an employee there and they can train you their way and not have to pay you "Coder pay". They look at it as cheap labor and you can look at it as experience, "crawling before you walk", "getting what you need to find better", etc. It's easy to move around in small settings such as this. You can get your experience there until a better opportunity comes along. I know this for a fact because I work in the field for years before going back to school. Now I'm looking into getting back into the field until I get my Therapy license. As a matter of fact, the medical billing facility I worked for and got most of my experience is located in Bartlett. If you're still looking for employment email me at jaiscaife@yahoo.com and I will provide you with the information. Good Luck! I hope I was/could be of help to you. |
