Right now this field is over saturated with new grads with no experience. you are competing against a lot of people just like you. the best advice is to try and get your foot in the medical door. many have found success starting out in medical records, billing or front desk. they gain medical experience as well as icd 9, cpt and reimbursement and can leverage it into a coding job.

I have to say, after reading all of these posts I'm beginning to wonder if taking the course I'm halfway through is even worth my time and money..If I cant get a job doing it why bother? All I wanted was to better myself and be able to support my new baby girl!

This career is definitely worth it, there are so many opportunities, unfortunately, it can be a little hard to break into, so try to get a job elsewhere in the field, such as medical records, billing, data entry or front desk. Gain medical experience and become more familiar with ICD 9, CPT and reimbursement. After you get your experience, leverage it for a coding job, it might take a little while, but once you are in, there a lot of available jobs.

This isn't an easy job, it takes time and hard work, there is a lot to learn and unfortunately, the schools do not teach you enough to go straight into coding. Especially now when there is increased legislation in regards to fraud, employers now more than ever need experienced coders who will code correctly and not cause unnecessary audits.

Don't give up, you are halfway, finish it, put in your time and work your way up, almost everyone who is a coder today starting at the bottom, including myself.

I am so thankful for the people who are saying, Dont fall for it. Its too good to be true , it is. I have run into so many scams and didnt fall for it thank god/ Even if it cost 199$, its a scam. I called the same company three times and he always gave me a different name even though i knew i was speaking with the same person and bogus phone numbers. No doctor in his right mind would give out confidential records to anyone to key into a computer. You have to work for these doctors and if they trust you enough, maybe you will get lucky and be offered a job at home after years of dedication and hard work. I am a certified medical assistant and have been through the ropes. These jobs just dont exist without certain criteria and proven work history and credentials.

INVESTIGATOR in Dallas, Pennsylvania said: JACK DAVIS? Do NOT call 877-748-XXXX for a "work at home" job. He only wants to sell his "required" software for $199. Do NOT send any money!

I called this number due to an ad posting in our local newspaper stating Billing Specialist needed. Local company. $12 - $14 an hour. After investigating the address and company name through California's business licensing division and calling our local newspaper(he listed this under a local practice who had no idea he used their name), I too found out this was a scam!!!!!!

Mike in Los Angeles, California said: RULE OF THUMB - Anyone who tells you you can come directly out of school and work from home in Transcription, Billing, Coding, or Collections is full of it.

You can sell your Medical Transcription Education on its own Merit but try to be a little more truthful in your presentation.

Actually, many medical transcriptionists start working from home right after graduation if they complete an AHDI-approved course. I completed an online course in 2007 and have been working home as a full-time MT since. This is not uncommon. All the MTs I know have started out working from home.

I have since started looking into billing as I have had many people asking me if I do billing as well as they need someone to do their billing and have said that if I learn how to do it, I could do their work from home. So I have started to look into it to see if this is something worthwhile or not.

Hello all ... Yes, Mirta is right. There are no legitimate "Medical Billing from Home" However, there are a few Doctors out there that will rather have someone conduct their billing at a low cost. That is where we "billers" come in and offer an inexpensive solution. I do work from home for a Doctor, he prefers to pay me under $10K a year to perform his billing rather than hiring a person at $30k plus to do billing and many other functions, and have the person leave the job sooner than soon. I have a homebase "HIPAA" compliant office set up - triple lock records, and 99 percent of the billing is electronically. I presented this to my Dr who I've been with for almost 8 years now, and keep him happy. You just have to conduct your research. It took me two years to find him...

Mochalovejoy is right ... Mirta is right about "no legitimate" billing from home ... Because you don't need a special program! Mochalovejoy is 100 percent CORRECT! You have to built your reputation ... I have workin in the medical billing since 1995 and in 2003 (after 2 years of heavy marketing, research, presentations, and maybe over 100 doctors I interviewed with) I found one that trusted me and hired me. I since been with him (work from hoome) I created my own reports (excel) I bill electronically, thru many clearinghouses who offer free claims submissions ... YOU DO NOT NEED ANY SPECIAL PROGRAM! Improvise PEEPS! DO your homework and like Mochalovejoy said "PAY UR DUES"

To let you know. I have taken the course on Medical Claims and Billing Specialist July 2008 and finished pretty fast. I waited till after the holidays to find a job. Well, to my dismay, I couldn't find a job around my small town. Most places that I have seen on the internet want 2+ years experience. I called the company that I went through and all they gave me was the run around and wouldn't help me find a job. I am still looking for a job. Better check with some of the schools and ask them if they will help you look for a job, etc.

I break down hospital bills for medical auditor's so they can audit a hospital bill in an organized and timely fashion. I can customize the bill to the auditor's choosing. I have been breaking bills down for 6 years now. Does anyone know of anyone that needs this service? It could be a hospital, a contract auditor or the insurance company.

Any assistance would be truly apprciated!

P.S. Since I am new to this field so if any most doctor's office or hospital won't hire me, and most companys want 2-5 years experience which don't have. So I am willing to "Volunteer" for the experience!!!!

You need to look into "Medisoft" that is one of the major software programs most Dr's and Hospitals are using!

I am afraid of doing it just because that 199 is like 3 bills that I could be paying. please tell me what you think. and If you have ever heard of the company NETWORK HEALTH???

From my understanding no company can give you Doctors, this is something you must interview and contract on your own. Hope this is helpful. I have taught medical billing and worked over 30 years experience.

I have read some of the posts here and it seems like people are so quick to discourage one another. Just because one person went to school for billing and couldn't find work, doesn't mean the next person will not find work. To all those looking to work from home, keep looking! We will find what we need. If I see something or hear something, I will surely post it.

It is very difficult to land a client. I only bill for a home care agency from my home @ this time. I work @ a medical group, entering charges & I also bill straight to Medicare for a hospice org. You truly have to be a sales person to get out there & do effective marketing.Have you checked out all the different softwares out there? I would use a internet based software ex; LEONARDO MD, ADVANCED MD etc. You should not buy a software program that can cost thousands of dollars.

You can pretty much disregard everything this person just said. You DO want to invest in a good software and IT WILL NOT cost you just a couple hundred bucks.

I opened my business 2 months ago and I have 2 clients. Prior to beginning my business, I was doing billing for an attorney. I took the course at www.medicalbillingcourse.com and afterwards I used their marketing support. My marketing material is beautiful because of them and it works!

If you send out crappy looking material, and you use a shoddy software ---- well, you'll probably be in the same boat as the person who wrote what I just responded to.
