I am a 44 year old male who has had his own construction company for 22 years. A couple of years ago I was hurt on the job and eventually lost my leg (bka) due to complications. I am now looking to re-enter the work force and medical jobs have always intrigued me. Having said that...
I want to become a medical coder/billing specialist. I have decided on the AHIMA program online(unless you know a cheaper way with same prestige). This is where it becomes tricky for me. This industry has more initials for the certification levels or specialities than I could ever imagine. I need someone to walk me through the basic proggression of certifications that I will need to acuire and in whtt order to make myself the most marketable that I can be. I need to know what boards to sit for, what has the highest potential starting salary, which is the most realistic job for someone who desires to work from home if possinle.I have read thgis forum and I belive that you folks can help me out. I welcome any and all information that I can get before I write a very large check for the schooling. Keep in mind that no detail or comment about this field is too small.
Thank You,
JimmyB

RHIT, RHIA are mostly desired by hospital. Need to have A.S or B.A in HIT to be eligible to sit for exam.
If you don't have time/money to go to study that long, just try to take CCS, CCS-P or CPC.
You cannot work at home unless you have a few years experience first. It is hard to go solo if you are new to this career.

Starting salary is hard to say. Depend on location, your position and what credential you earn.
