I was in the same position 1.5 yrs ago. I have a BS in Finance & 10 yrs work experience. I chose a "brick & mortar" prog. because I was concerned about getting a position after graduation.

If I had to do it over, I would go to an AHIMA prog and take the RHIT. It is more marketable. I finished my program & can't even get an interview for a medical secretary job let alone an HIT job. I am in my 30s have experience in management, accounting, budgets and technical writing. I did exceptionally well in my classes, attended a school with a good "name" and live in an area that is not as hard hit by the recession as other areas but I am discouraged and thinking of going back to my previous profession.

Consider how long you can go without a paycheck after graduation, how low of a salary you can take (I am finding that $13-$15/hour is too high of an expectation)and how soon any loan pmts will have to be made. It is not impossible but it is A LOT HARDER than I thought it would be.

Do you think a potential employer considers you "overqualified"?

Probably, but I think that is going to become the case more now. I think a lot of people, especially after having kids, want to re-evaluate and not necessarily return to where they left off.

I am CPC-A Certified. I have studied at Ladera Paths Training Center for CCS coding for 1 year in which I received a certificate for completing the class. I interned at the VA hospital completing 80 hours. I attended Marqui Institute for CPC and received a certificate of completion. I then received my CPC-A certification. I am now enrolled in an externship which I am not completley satisfied with. I am looking for a training position in inpatient and outpatient coding.I am also looking for a qualified person to train me in remote coding. I am dedicated and I am willing to work hard in pursusing my career in medical coding.

Hi everyone, I'm currently studying to take the CCS exam in Feb. or Mar. My question is do you recommend that I use the 2007 or 2008 study guides for my study material. I'm planning on purchasing Faye Brown's Handbook and/or CCS review guide by Carol Buck. If you recommend any other books please let me know.

I am an LVN in CA with 10 years experience on a Med/Surg/Rehab floor. LVN's are losing their jobs right and left from acute care so I thought I would transition into Medical coding. I am starting a course and have all my coding texts, but now I am wondering which ceritification to get? CPC or the AHIMA designation? And how does one go about finding a job? They ALL seem to say at least 2 years experience. How does one get the experience?

I am looking for a part time coding home position. I have been in the Medical Billing field for 20+ years and became a CPC in 2004. I am currently working as a radiology and anesthesia coder full time, and am simply looking to make additional money at home.

Hello everyone,
I have been attending classes since 2005 at a community college. I currently have a certifcate in medical office management, and medical assisting: insurance coding. I am also furthering my education for my general medical assisting and my associate of appiled sciences in medical assisting which I am close to finishing. I have looked for local jobs and they don't want to pay more then 8.50 to 10.00 an hour. I make way more that take at my retail job so I haven't taken any of the jobs offered to me because such a cut in pay for me. I would love to work from home but I haven't been about to find any companys in arizona or that work nationwide. If anyone knows of any good companys or jobs in my area let me know please.

I should contact them. I have a remote coding job and I hate it. The company I work for doesn't treat the employees very well. The amount of work I am required to do on a daily basis is ridiculous. It's waaaaaay too much. I have no life outside of this job.

If you are taking the CCS exam before June 1, 2009, you would need the 2008 Version of ICD-9 and AMA CPT books. I'm not familiar with Faye Brown's study guide, but I have used Thomson Delmar Professional Review Guide for the CCS. I passed..I found that this book was exactly like the CCS Exam..good luck

Who are U working for now?

I don't have any coding experience yet I have been working retail for over 7 years at Wal-mart and make decent money but I don't aspire to work there forever. I have stuck with them for so long because I work good hours and my son doesn't have to attend day care. Thats really why I wanted a coding career so I can stay home with him eventually. Coding jobs in this town are very slim to none. I will have to check out UASI I need to get my CCS. Does anyone know how much it costs to take?

Their information states they have job placement assistance. Did they not help you find a position? I am hoping to be able to sign up for these classes and continue my plans of being able to find remote work from home here in Texas. I recently passed the NCICS (National Certified Insurance & Coding Specialist) exam and hopefully this month will buy the practice book from AAPC to study for the CPC. What company do you work for? Working by the chart can be very unfair to the coder. It takes away the amount of quality time you might want to use on certain charts and senario's. Try looking for a company that pays by the hour.

I also finished the U.S.Career Institute thinking they would help find a job. I have over fourteen years coding experience and am CPC certified. I have had no satisfation with this agency. It seems to just be another take my money setup. I am looking for remote coding and have had no luck.

Hi I too took the US Career Institute course and NO they do not help you find jobs. They give you a list of places to contact and no further assistance. I am very disappointed and feel that I threw my money away! I was already a CPC and had fourteen years experience. I thought taking this course would give me a hands up on finding a remote coding job. Not Happy!

I have not had any luck with remote jobs coming through. I have heard from the grapevine that hospitals are using their coders more and offering overtime, to keep from having to use contract coders. The openings for coders are very slim right now. And most hospitals want experienced coders, like 2 years or more experience.
I personally would not recommend a coding class to anyone.

Has anyone heard that the contract companies are laying contract people off because the hospitals have quit using contract companies such as med parters, Kforce, etc. I have been out of the traveling coding for a few months, but I had heard that the contract companies were having a really hard time getting jobs for their coders jobs?

I also am reviewing my options for training: a certificate program at a local community college or a self-paced book study program. I already have a bachelor's degree in another field. I know the value of taking classes that provide transferable credits, but at this point I don't think I want/need an associate's or bachelor's degree in medical records field. The dollar costs are about the same. The benefit of the self-paced study is that I might could finish sooner. The benefit of the community college program is that their graduates probably have a jump on jobs in our small town.

I do believe that would be in your best interest to take a structured class.

If you take some of the self-paced on the internet or at a location, this may take YOU a few months. However, many of the training programs have "fillers". If you are sharp with anatomy and medical terminology you could swing a 8 week course.

It also depends on how you feel. You may take a course that costs thousands of dollars and is self paced, but you may take the certification test at any time.

If you want to know what might expect I would suggest purchasing a pretest exam book off of amazon.com or e-bay.

I've been in touch with Maxim and they tell me that theya re only hiring for inpatient coding...I only have outpatient/physician coding experience. Anyone know of anything for that area?

Is anyone an independent contractor? I'm already employed as a coder, but someone wants me to code part time as an independent contractor. Will I need a business license, liability insurance, etc.? What about taxes? I've never done this before and don't know if it would be worth it. Thanks for any input.

I am also looking into it, a company called coding compliance management. I am going to be taking their test this coming weekend first, if everything goes well. I will problemly get an accountants input on it. I googled independent contractor laws and it sounds like it should be a problem to do the taxes and all. I know you will get a 1099 form from the company during tax time, and you have to pay self employment taxes and your income taxes with whatever % it is that you have to deduct. You can do an itemized deduction for all your working expenses as well. So if you want to email me your email address I can give you more details.
