Frances in El Dorado, Arkansas said: I am researching medical coding as an option for a mid-life career change. My ultimate goal is to settle in a career that provides the option of working from home. So far my research tells me that certification and 2 years' work experience in a hospital setting are necessary before pursuing a remote coding job. Is this information accurate from your standpoint? You sound like me. I have a bachelor's and I am thinking about pursuing coding with a online self study that I plan on buying from Amazon. I did the research as well and it is true about the process you have to go through to work from home and you will be darn lucky to land that hospital position to get that experience to work from home. My method of study is goning to be a couple of hundreds not thousand. Who wants to invest so much money and the chances of getting a job is slim-to-none. |

No. Indpendent Contractor means you will not be an employee with the company as you will be a 1099, you are responsible for your own taxes to be submitted to the government. Also 1099 contractors are not subject to usually the 8a-5pm work hours. IT means as long as you get it done. Some employers try to cheat the system and abuse the laws of 1099 independent contract employees. Read you state guidelines. |

I am also interested in doing remote coding from home. I would like only part time work. I have over 8 years of experience coding both outpatient and inpatient (although I am most proficient in outpatient coding). I have a Bachelors of Business Administraion degree with a concentration in Health Services Administration and have the CCS-P certification from AHIMA. I currently work full time for a VA medical center as a coder. I have tried Maxim, but was told there are currently no positions available. Does anyone know of any other companies that are hiring? |

I am looking for an outpatient remote coding position. I have been a medical coder for 5 years now. I have my CPC and I have two small children at home and can't afford daycare. My husband's job is heating and cooling so his hours are slim with the economy. If anyone knows a company or indivdual that is looking for Outpatient coding or collection work from home. I would be greatly apprecitive.

I am finding it so hard to find remote work. Maxim has been giving me the run around for two years. Try Mckesson, PHNS, Medassurant, Kforce, The codding source for starters. Some tests are brutual and even if you pass, they still might not have work. Very discouriging for me I have been remote coding for over two years and the work is hard to find now. Please email me personally if any one else has and leads. thanks. cocoaweez@comcast.net thanks again. |

I came to this forum when searching for an answer of a medical coding question. I hope someone can help me to answer my question. I had abnormal contraction when I was 6 months pregnant last year due to an auto accident. I went to a nearby hospital and was sent to their labor and delivery ward. An OB doctor there examined me. I stayed in the hospital for few hours and was released subsequently. But the doctor didn't send me a bill until last July, yes, 10 months after the hospital visit. And I had signed the release form with the auto insurance company. The bill from the hospital was sent to me last year and has been paid. On the doctor's bill, they billed the medical service I received at the hospital as "99204, Office Visit, New Pt., Level 4". I felt they should bill their service as "99222, initial hospital care". Am I correct? The reason I am questioning this is because this doctor is not my insurance company's contracted provider but the hospital I went to is. If the doctor had billed me correctly, my insurance company would have paid them as a network provider(because it's associated with an in-network hospital visit). Believe it or not, while I was still negotiating with this doctor(I was hoping they could reduce the bill because of their mistake and I would just pay the balance out of my pocket) , they sent me to collection! now I am fighting with the collection agency, and that's how I found out the problem with the CPT code they used. Any help is highly appreciated! |

I'm currently in the HIT program. I graduate in May 2010. I'm looking for a part time coding position in the Greenville or Raleigh area. I was wondering if a facility would be willing to work with me until I graduate, then I can come on board full time. I've been working in Health care for over 13 years. I have some coding experience working in an Orthopaedic office. I'm also a CNA as well. I have experience in Triage, scheduling appoints, I work well with the doctors and other employees, I've work in the medical records department, I have experience with getting authorization, and Health Span. I'm just trying to get ahead start by getting my foot in the door somewhere. I'm very motivated, a hard worker, and a very quick learner. If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it. Thank You |
