I am new at this remote coding job search. I am getting the sense that in order to work remote that you have to live in that city and work remotely within that city. I am looking for a job where I can work from home here in South Dakota for a company in another state. Does anybody know of a company that does this...or am I deluded!
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

No luck as of yet, but I am at the point where I may just pick up the phone and touch someone. How is it going for you?

Still on the search, but I am actually also thinking of checking out if there are any temporary jobs coding down in Arizona, as that is where I really want to go for the winters.

JRhodes in Texas said: Hi, it can be quite challenging finding the perfect job, having said that, finding THE well paying remote coding/auditing job is like finding a needle in a haystack. 9 times out of 10, the companies who are searching for remote coders/auditors will only review/accept applications of those candidates who are 1) Certified (AAPC-CPC,CPC-H or similar) or AHIMA (CCS, RHIA, RHIT)
2) The ideal candidate (for the remote position) should have NO less than 2 yrs, but you will find that most of the employment announcements wants between 3-5 years.

Many people take the initiative to further their education by attending a post secondary institition, unfortunately, there seems to be a growing number of graduates who have received their "certificates" and are under the impression that the "certificate" will assist or enable them to compete for the coding jobs. I cannot swear to this but I can say that this is very rare. Coding Certificates are totally different from coding credentials. So be very cautious when looking at schools, research what they offer and if you can, ask someone who is a certified coder to check the school's accredidation...or you can look yourself at www.ahima.org or www.aapc.com (I can't speak for AAPC) but I know for a fact that AHIMA has links and a list of approved accredited schools.

The best way to find employers looking for remote coders/auditors is to network, find out which companies offer those services to their clients, and finally, do some internet and local research! There are also facilities who are willing to hire you for initial on site training and employment with the opportunity or possibility of working remotely from home if your coding accuracy is 95% or greater. I hope I have not offended anyone, it is certainly not my intent. My email address is rhodes468@yahoo.com Good luck to you all

thanks!

Hi Cheryl,

No you are not deluded :-) I am a coder from Virginia and I work for a company called MRSI (medical reimbursement systems inc.) Its based in Massachusettes but hires from many different states for a remote coding position. The company can be found on-line. The downfall is that there are no benefits and it pays $.75 cents per chart. Thats where I currently work but im still in search of something better. Hope this helps!

Has anyone ever heard of a company called Kiwi-Tek? Again, no benefits, but they say they make $30-40 per hour. (of course that is the recruiter)

Hi Tiera,

Are you only interested in remote work? The reason I ask is because I think there is an on site coding position in SD but I'd have to get back to you on that.

I am looking for a remote coding position as well. I have been in the field since 1995 and certified as an CCS-P since 2004. Has anyone ever hired a recruiter to help with the search? I just cant seem to find anything in Iowa for this type of position unless you already worked for a hospital and they sent you home. I dont understand why it is so hard to find one. I can find all kinds of advertisement for medical billing and coding from home.

I am so frustrated with my friends telling me to go after my CPC. I have had this credtential for five years. I got laid off 1 year ago and can't seem to find a remote coding/billing job. I have a Bachelor's degree and I can't not find a job. I need to work from home because we have two boys and daycare is too expensive. Does anyone have real companies that are hiring remote coding, billing or auditing medical charts.

Hi Tiera,
I just graduated from a coding class and am going for my CPC in a few months, I was wondering if MRSI hires coders that are not certified and if so is it hard to get a job with them?? Thanks for the help,
Amy :)

I do not know about this specific company, but generally speaking, employers usually only hire certified coders with at least 2-3 years coding experience for their remote coding positions.

I know the schools tell you you can work from home, which is true, but not right away. You need to work in an office for awhile, gain experience and get familiar with coding.

The 6-9 month coding classes just don't teach you enough to be able to code on your own. There is still a lot for you to learn, take an office job, get certified, get experience and then look for remote.

Many times freshly certified are more all round knowledge than the ones with 3-4 years experience. With 3-4 years experience you may get better in the area you are coding but you do get rusted with many other things in coding. This is my own experience and some of my colleagues too, as I have seen! Unfortunately employers seem to believe more in number of years than the real knowledge.

I don't know about that, for the most part I think employers want both. I had 3 years experience, but was not certified and could not get a job. Every interviewer said they wanted someone certified.

I think employers are now realizing that having one or the other makes someone limited, and they now want well rounded coders, which is why they request for a coder to have BOTH certification and experience.

There may be some old school employers who only want experience, but for the most part, employers realize coders need both.

Hi Tiera,
I used to work for MRSI and they have a bad name. They haven't changed there rates for years and its sad they are all ways looking for coders because no one stays. A coder could make as much as 5.00 per chart why work for free. I would not recommend this company.

We have the opportunity for a part time remote coding project. The applicant should be an RHIA and a certified trainer with over 5 years experience after certification. DoD experience preferred. Please send resume to: help@revcys.com
