What is the difference between a CPT procedure code and a ICD 9 procedure code? I don't understand when I should use a CPT procedure code, or when I should use a ICD 9 procedure code? Or are they interchangable, either or being correct?

ICD procedure codes used for inpatient coding while CPT procedure code used with outpatient/physician coding. It is not interchangable!

ICD-9 is for the diagnosis, and CPT is Current Procedural Terminology, which means it is the code for the actual procedure, and a ICD-9 code (diagnosis) has to be used with it to support the need for the procedure. Example for 81000 urinalysis would be used with a UTI urinary tracr infection and the code for the diagnosis.
