Sam, it appears that the Medical Coding ...blogspot turned out to be just another medical coding career advertisement. Unless there is something that you see that I do not, it is just an advertisement, but thank you for trying. |

I recently took the CPC exam about 2 years ago and I missed by 3 points. Very upset and hurt. I hope the 3rd time I take it. It will be a charm. My question is, Are there any books (study guides) that I can purchase to review and practice my skills. Read! read! and read. I don't think it will make much sense for me to take another refresher course to waste money. If anyone knows please let me know. You can contact me at Diamonddee007@hotmail.com. Thanks for any comments or suggestions. |

And you'd be seeking a position at your own risk. They just had a mass layoff in December. You may want to be extremely careful seeking out this employer. And for the CPC exam, study Carol Buck. For the CCS, study the AHIMA books. |

Yes, try US Career Institute, it's online program, they're great!! I like it very much, they send you books, everything you need to study, and have any question you can call or email to ask instructors questions. You can go on your own pace, and it's exciting and can't wait to see your score in the mail. Has to be passing grade 70% and up... Good luck.... |

Did you go through the US Career Institute program? Are you finished? Any job prospects yet? I took the AAPC certification program online last year and really enjoyed it, took about 4 months. But so far that hasn't impressed anyone :-( I have been looking for an internship or job shadowing, but so far nothing. |

I'm going through it right now, should be done by summer. So, I'm not applying jobs yet, but Iam trying to get in healthcare environment jobs, to help me out a little bit for my future, I'm watching who hiring for medical coding position, planning to apply in the future.
Don't give up do some research,at the hospital and ask the human resource dept, or someone that's a coder. Try working in healthcare environment too. Eugene, may not have enough openings? Are you trying to apply as Medical Coding position? That's what I'm going for, Medical Coding Specialist, and I have strong data entry and 10 key skills, some healthcare environment skills, but I think they want more current. My friend, been working for Providence in a office for a long while, than they offer a remote coding job. So, she got lucky got in the right field. Try non-profit healthjobs, sometimes they'll cross train. |

I am looking into some of the medical billing and coding schools but I would like to know if this is a waste of time or not. I do not want to spend alot of money on a school and then not be able to find a job in the heathcare industry. I do not have any previous experience in the heath care industry either. Any information would be greatly appreciated. thanks |
|
arenealmli@yahoo.com in Portland, Oregon 25 months ago |
First, I would make sure if Healthcare environment is growing rapidly in your town. Healthcare fields has soo many different jobs, clinics, optical care, caregiver, secretary for doctors, dentist, hospital would be far better, you can move around in the hospital once you get your foot in, 'cause they usually hire first who needs job,(whomever works in the hospital), then they advertise if still open. Start out cafeteria or housekeeping if ya have to, hospital pays good and good insurance (hardly nothing taking out of paycheck) Then be sure to commit what you want to school. US Career Institute, so far I think it's a good school, reasonable mthly low payment. It's on line course, look it up on line, so far I think it's a good school, career wise, some career prefer three yrs experience, but if ya gone to school, and worked some healthcare, and some office skills, would show you're serious, and have skills. Inpatients coder may be the one hard to get, but like outpatients, urgent care, emergency care, coding specialist, data specialist, etc, would be a try. Any big career on anything would be hard to get your foot in the door, have a good healthcare experience, office skills, good resume, good interviews, good grades in school and get that certificate, and when the time is right you'll be a medical coder. |

By the way no education is no waste of time, it's good to have knowledge, even if decided to do something elso, it's good for the brain!! And looks good on your resume. Education is good for everyone doesn't to try anything new. |

Your hospital staff, or human resource probably have the information, or look for the jobs at the hospital you work at, they usually advertise it first for employees for a week, then look on line you should see what openings just keep your eyes open. |

For those of you looking for a Coding Internship....GOOD NEWS! Effective August 2010 via Carol Buck, MS, CPC, CPC-H there is an ONLINE Medical Coding Internship....Google "Carol Buck Online Medical Coding Internship." It consists of coding 500 reports, for 60 Physicians, across all specialities. There is a virtual desk, you clock your hours, it tracks your coding time and accuracy and at the end you have a "portfolio" to show prospective employers your skill set. This is NOT a coding training program....this is for individuals who are already trained and NEED an internship to get their foot in the door. I am graduating from the AHIMA Coding Program in 8 weeks and I plan to do the Carol Buck Internship. Also...for those of you "thinking about a Coding Career" check out AHIMA.org...The Program is a LOT of work and challenging BUT worth it! Good Luck to all! |

autumn in Salem, Oregon said: thank you sooo very much!!!! will be looking forward to it!! No you DO NOT get paid....and from the info I saw the cost is 99.00 dollars BUT they also recommend that you purchase a couple of Carol Buck's books with it (so you will want to factor that one in as well). I have done internships before (when I got my RHIT) and I had a couple mentors 2 were great and one just had me file and get her coffee for 3 months!!! The Online Internship I think is an excellent option since it tracks all your hours and progress. By the time you are done you will have coded 500 reports. That is a LOT of coding! We are living in an Online age (education, work, so why not an Online internship). I am taking the CCA (Certified Coding Associate) Exam thru AHIMA after I graduate...(demonstrates entry level skill set). I am hoping that between the CCA, The Online Internship and my RHIT...that someone will hire me). |

What is RHIT??? Yeah, I'm on line school for medical coding too. I'm starting to have doubts about it, realize everything keeps costing money with internship, books, big exam I see is about $300.00, then you wonder if it's worth it? I would like to be a remote coder. Well, good luck, let me know how it goes, and if you got a career going. I'll let you know, and maybe later I may have more questions. Thanks. |

I would like to be a remote coder. Well, good luck, let me know how it goes, and if you got a career going. I'll let you know, and maybe later I may have more questions. a RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) is the certification you sit for usually after you have completed an associates degree in Health Information Management. It covers more areas than just coding, so RHITs tend to make more money or be in supervisory positions. The thing about coding is once you are in, its a great field, but it can be a little hard getting in. It might be especially hard to be a remote coder right away, most employers want 2-3 years experience, PLUS a certification. The reason being is that you are unsupervised in your coding, and an employer wants to make sure you will code correctly and not create audit problems. but hang in there, start with an office coding job and work from there. like i said, once you get in, its an awesome field. |

Permenter5 in Philadelphia, Mississippi said: Valentine in Salt Lake City, Utah I used the Carol Buck study guide for CPC, I think AAPC probably has one as well. I also bought 2 of the CPC practice tests directly from AAPC, they were a little pricey, but they are the truest gage as to how ready you are for the actual test. I found the mock questions in the study guide to be harder than the actual test, which was a pleasant surprise when i sat for the actual test and it wasn't so bad. I bought my study guide in Dec. and sat for my CPC in February and passed my first time. |

THEY ONE I BOUGHT WAS ABOUT 80.00 BUT IT COMES WITH A CD WITH A BEFORE AND AFTER TEST. THE BEFORE TEST LETS YOU KNOW THE AREAS YOU NEED TO WORK ON. THAT STUDY GUIDE HELP ME VERY MUCH. IT IS A VERY LARGE BOOK, BUT IT IS BROKEN DOWN TO MAKE IT EASY TO STUDY, AND THERE WAS NOTHING ON THE TEST THAT WASNT IN THE BOOK. |

It would be pretty difficult to run a successful billing company without having prior experience, there are so many rules and guidelines that can really only be learned by doing. Besides, you would have a hard time finding any clients that would switch their billing to you if you didn't have a proven track record of accurate and efficient billing. I would recommend you working at an already established company to gain experience and then you can start your own. |

There are so many remote coding companies, a quick google search of "remote coding", brings up lots of companies. Most of them are always looking for experienced coders, but someone did post on the AAPC forum that The Coding Network has immediate openings for all specialties. |

I'm not sure of these will help or not, but I have a small list of companies that hire at home coders on my website www.medicalbillingandmedicalcoding.com/remotemedicalcodingjobs.html (scroll to the bottom) I know some of them require 3 year, but I think there were some that had 2 as a requirement as well. I have worked for three of these companies myself and currently work for one now. I would suggest submitting a resume anyways. Your clinical nursing experience may give you the opportunity to take the entrance exam. If you can pass that you should ge the job even if you're a little short on experience. Good luck! |

I have taken my certification exam 4 times and cant seem to pass it(that has cost about $600) plus if you are starting a new year you have to re-purchase your books which comes to almost $ I have been done with school for almost a year and cant find work..to me it is just a big waste! Also the school that i attended was supposed to help me find work right out of school and they hardly call me, I have to call and bother them to see if she has anything..I dont suggest this job field and I dont suggest Concorde Career Institute! |
