If so do you find good study guides on their website? Any help or suggestions would be greatfully appreciated. I have enjoyed reading all of your comments. Nice to see that there are others in the same boat. Thanks. Lori,

Happy girl in Virginia Beach, Virginia said: Hello you all ! Congrats! I passed three months ago and my test was very similar to yours. I think the exam is fairly standard now, in that every person has the same number of questions from each domain. I know a few years ago the exams were wildly different--one would be 80% computer/security questions, another would have a ton of coding, etc. Now everyone gets questions from each domain. The questions are in a "bank", so everyone doesn't have the exact same exam, but the areas tested are the same. I hope that helps people studying! (The domains of study are on the AHIMA site) |

I was studing for my RHIT test, and I was trying to find the hospital transfer methodology on the CMS website, I found a proposed rule change for 09 which would change what I learned in school: Under the general post-acute transfer policy, the transferring hospital will be paid 50 percent of the total IPPS payment plus the average per diem for the first day of the stay. For the special pay MS-DRGs, the transferring hospital will also receive 50 percent of the per diem amount for each subsequent day of the stay, up to the full MS?DRG payment amount. Does anyone know if that actually took effect in 09? If so, when does AHIMA change the test to match new Medicare rules like this. I also found some new proposed JCAHO regs that are being added because they lost CMS "deemed" status in 09. Many have to do with Medical Records, documentation, etc. I don't think they are final yet. But again, I wonder with AHIMA will change their test to test for this new stuff. Cathy P |

Hi Lori, I know how you feel about taking test. I'm also scare to death on test taking. I have been studying for 8 months now and been putting off the test because I let me nerves get the best of me. But I'm finally taking RHIT exam in the beginning of April 09. Unfortunately, I just found out about this discussion board I wish I found out about it earlier because I been studying from the 07 PRG and using Alfred State website I did not purchase the 08 PRG and now I wish I did from reading the discussion board. Anyway, I hope it is enough for me to pass. Just hang in there and know that you are not alone in feeling scare of taking test. |

How many questions can you miss to still pass and can you tell me what fields should I study the most for on the RHIT exam? I have to get this taken by May and I hate the thought of going in there and falling. Test scare me to death. Any advise would be helpful, I just keep putting it off and I am tired of it sitting on my shoulders, weighing me down. Thanks for yur help. Lori Hi Lori, I'm also scare of taking test as well. I've been studying for my RHIT exam 8 months now been putting it off because I feel scare of failing. Anyway, I finally got the nerve up and taking the exam in the first week on April 09. I've been using the 07 PRG book and Alfred State website which have practice questions. I wish I found out about this discussion board earlier because I would have definately purchase 08 book and now they have come out with an 09 it does not at this point make sense for me to purchase that book when I taking the test within one. I'm already schedule to take my test the first week in April so I month before taking the exam did not make sense for me to purchase the 09 at this point. Yes, I am going to take it this summer, and hopefuly take the RHIA next summer. Some of the same information should be on both, so that is why I almost decided to wait and just take the RHIA. I am also taking college courses toward my RHIA, so I have not had much time to study. I sent in the application, and I have got to get my transcript sent, I think I will have 4 months to take it after that. I am also planning to take 2 Summer classes, so that I can finish by next summer, so I am concerned that I will not have enough time to study. Good Luck! I hope to sit for mine in May. I HATE to study, I can think of 101 other things that I must do!!! Do you have the website for those practice questions from Alfred State? I have been in the medical field for 12 years, there is so much I don't know. I have this terrible attitude that everything I need to know, I can find in books (web) when needed or consult with my director. There is so much to know, it is hard to decide what to study for. I am at the point that I just want to take the test and see what it is like and then re-take it if needed. I wonder how much of the test has to do with file systems. That is a thing of the past at the hospital that I work at, we are electronic. Again, good luck. |

I paid the $25 for the Alfred State Website, but I have not used it very much. I am taking the PRG, and looking up the information for all the answers and put them on powerpoints (that the ones I put on my website). I have not finished all the subjects though, I get very compulsive when it comes to preparing. I would dye if I failed that test. It may have something to do with expectations. My mother retired from teaching in a RHIT program that she started, and I don't want to disappoint her, but it may have nothing to do with that because I always over prepare for tests. |

Hi Lori, Thanks I'm going to need all the luck. Alfred State is located in Ablany New York and there is a $25 fee to sign up. Just give information a call and when you get their phone# just ask them that you would like to sign up for their RHIT exam questions. I HATE to study as well I'm at the point too where I just want to take the test and see what it is all about and then re-take if needed. But I hope I don't have to re-take the test. Thanks Again!!! |

I already had the PRG, and everyone was saying they had passed the test with that, so I decided just to prepare my own review material, using the answers on the PRG as a guide. Also, after finding answers that I looked up and knew was wrong on the PRG, I did not want to get steered in the wrong direction by it. That is how I started with the PowerPoints when I had a study buddy, we would get together and review the subjects, and then do the PRG practice test. She had failed the test before, and she decided not to take it again and stopped reviewing. Cathy P |

I took the test today and passed. I thought I would post some info that might be helpful. I really think that the PRG book/CD is the best resource for studying. Use that with the texts from classes and maybe review old notes and tests. I paid the $80 for the OHIMA online prep and my personal opinion is that it is not close to being worth $80. I think it is really nice that they are offering this, but I really feel that the price is too much. It does not offer enough in-depth information to make it worth the price. As far as what to expect on the test, make sure that you know terms and other information regarding computer technology in general and how it relates to health information. Also, there were a lot of questions on HR, HIPAA type issues, and know your graphs and what they are used for. My test had several questions on coding for pregnancy/obstetrics. I have a 2008 PRG book and CD that is available to anyone who wants it - you just need to pay for the media mail shipping which is probably around $5.00. Reply to this message and include your email address and I will contact you for shipping info. |

Now, 2 1/2 years later, I wanted to persue it. But most of the stuff I learned, including the coding part, might be obsolete now. I need advice on what to do. Do I go back and get another associate in HIT and start over again or can I just buy the new editions of the books I used when I was studying to study for the RHIT exam? Thanks! Hi Teresa, CONGRATS! GREAT JOB! THANKS FOR THE INFO! I am currently sharing 7 PowerPoint Presentations that I put together to review for the tests with students from 9 different students across the country. We are sharing them through Google Docs, and anyone sharing them can add information, which will help us all. I would love it if you would review them to see what needs to be added or changed, since you just took the test. I am going to take the test this summer between semesters. You can go to my website (www.medicalcodingresources.com), and click on study buddy tab, and either fill out the form to gain access to the documents, or email me at cp122578@gmail.com and I can send them to you, or you can join the discussion group on the site, and the documents are available on the discussion board. If you use Google Docs you will need a Google Password to access the documents, but you can be set up for free. You would be helping a lot of students. Thanks,

Well let me share my experience on taking the RHIT exam which is very different from everyone else I have read thus far. I took the exam on 3/31 and out of 150 questions I only recognize 25 questions. The rest of the questions I don't know where they came from. I studied for this test for 8 months. I studied from the 2007 PRG book, Alfred state had practice exams that I studied from, I study from the Q & A review Health Information Management book that had over 800 exam-style questions which I also studied. I went into that exam feeling very prepared because I was getting high 90's and 100 on my practice exams and I also understood the material in the process. I don't know where half of those questions came from? I'm still very puzzled about the exam I made educated guessed on the remaining 125 questions. I score a 73 missed by 6 points and felt that if there were 6 more questions up my alley I would have passed so I don't feel that bad but just feel like I don't know where to go from here to study again because more than half of the material that I studied from the PRG was not even on the test (even though I did not expect it to be word for word, but I least if the questions were worded differently I should been able to pick up the answer). I only had 5 coding questions, 5 statical questions, 6 charts questions and so forth. For me the test was not hard at all. Studying for the test was much harder for me. I did not pass because the questions that were on my test I was not familiar with them at all. So I guess it was the luck of the draw. I will take it again in 91 days. I now brought the 2009 PRG book and the new JB Review Comprehensive Review Guide for Health Information RHIA & RHIT exam prep. Studying should not be so bad this time around because I familiar with a lot of the information. I praying the 2nd time around will be the last and more questions will be put on the test that I'm familiar with. "I WILL NOT GIVE UP IT'S JUST NOT AN OPTION" |

Oh my, I'm really worried now. The questions that you did not recognize, what subject were they on? You know AHIMA just came out with courses for each Domain of the RHIT. Did it tell you which domain was the lowest? If so, you could just get the AHIMA course for that Domain. I think each Domain test cost $80.00 for members. I would like you to consider joining the new Yahoo discussion on my website (www.medicalcodingresources). It is for students studying for the exam. I have some review PowerPoints on the Yahoo Discussion board, and shared with the group on Google docs. You could help us by telling us if that information is on the test, and what we need to add to the study material. (www.medicalcodingresoruces.com) click the Study Buddy Tab. |

I can't speak for the above person, but I think there are a lot of people who think that the questions from the exam are going to be exactly the same (or very similar) to the ones in the PRG. The PRG is a great tool for helping show you what areas are going to be tested, but the questions on the actual exam are different, of course. I don't think you have anything to worry about, given the work you've put into it already! The Prometric score sheet does break down the score by domain and number right/wrong. |

I have other people say that the PRG is best & I started by taking the subjects covered on the the PRG, and I looked up the information and converted it to the PowerPoints. I sometimes even looked up the answers that were not correct because they are often relevant to the subject. I just hate test, and you combine that with my age, and I am letting fear get the best of me. Cathy P |

I did not post my comment to scare anyone at all that was not my intend. I was just telling my own experience. Now I understand why people only tell when they pass their exam. I also did not go on the test expecting that the questions should be word for word in any which way or form or similar. That would be really silly of me to think that. At least I had the gust to tell my experience of not passing. However, whenever you study for a big exam or any exam that you prepare for you should expect to see things that are somewhat familiar even though it is worded completely different. But that's OK!!! I glad I experience what I did and I will continue to study and don't let people negative comments affect me in anyway. I will continue to study and I am going to pass the next time around. Thanks to those with the positive comments. |

I have heard from other people that they thought the PRG was going to "give" them the answers and I was trying to help the other poster not be nervous. I took the same exam two months ago and passed, so my comment was based on my experience. The PRG basically directs you to the areas and concepts you need to know but it doesn't really break each one down. Ex--it has a section of roi questions but it doesn't ask every possible roi scenario. I had to supplement my PRG guide with my other textbooks in order to really understand the topic. I'm sorry that you failed the first time, I think every person who takes the test worried about that. My preceptor for my internship failed the first two times and then passed, so I think there are a lot of RHITs out there who took the test mroe than once and have great careers now. Did you get a printout of your scre and which areas you missed? |

I graduated with my AS in Health Information Tech. in December from Davenport University and took my entire courseload online (with exception of 2 classes in Merrillville, IN Campus) and I am now 3 classes away from my BS in HIM (they are working with AHIMA and do have a bachelor level degree here). I feel I have received an excellent education, however they are VERY pricey.Online credits are even more than $400 each..I am preparing for my RHIT exam now and am very nervous about the math portion.. The book I have gives you CD Roms to take mock exams on your computer and you can retake them several times. I have found it a very helpful tool to study with. Does anyone know if these questions are simaler to the real ones? I also am concerned about finding work..I have been devoting my time to school for almost 4 years now and havent worked..(years ago in HC but not hospital setting) so I will have no real experience only an RHIT and hopefully RHIA next fall. Every job seems to want experience. I continued on to obtain my degree rather than stopping with my coding cert. because I did not want to be stuck coding and wanted flexibility and eventually to do project work and EHR implementantion. I hope I am not sorely disapointed..I know it will take time to gain experience and starting at the bottom but I want to be able to do project work or consulting down the road ... |

I had no trouble with the RHIT exam and had a high score, and I think a lot of that can be attributed to the program. You will probably have to start out entry level in a hospital--especially if you want to move into EMR implementation. Be honest with your boss that you want to go in that direction and they will most likely help you get there--especially if your boss is RHIT/RHIA. I've found that my bosses are very interested in mentoring their staff :-) |

I WANT TO MAKE GOOD MONEY DOING BILLING AND CODING SO HOW FAR DO I NEED TO GO AND IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN STUDY FOR BEFORE I SIGN UP FOR CLASSES? |

sandra moore in clarkridge, Arkansas: Go to www.ahima.org or www.ahima.org/careers/college_search/search.asp. This will give you all of the information that you need. I understand from being told by my teacher that you should go for your R.H.I.T. as that is what is being sought after by hospitals and doctor's offices. It stands for Registered Health Information Technician. You can move on from that and become an R.H.I.A. (Administrator). R.H.I.T. is an A.A.S. With the R.H.I.T. you can get your foot in the door in medical records etc., before moving into coding. It is difficult to get into coding without experience. I would recommend going to one of the CAHIM accredited schools for your training. |

I am going to take my RHIT exam in a few weeks and I am using both the PRG and the SUNY site for practice. I was wondering if it is true, as the PRG states, that during the exam you have access to the statistical formulas via a drop down box on the computer screen. Also, test takers have access to the computer's calculator function? Last, do the coding questions include a description of the code like they do in the PRG or do they simply list a variety of codes without descriptions as they do in the SUNY practice site. Any clarification of this would be greatly appreciated as I am terrified of this test. |

I just took my exam today, and PASSED!!!! It was so scary. It was very hard. Cathy Pearson's studdybuddy web site was very helpful. Thanks Cathy for all of your hard work!!! Yes, you go in, go through a tutorial and the test starts. The questions come up and at the bottom of the screen you can quick calculator or formulas. You can mark any of the questions you have a question on and it will prompt you back to them at the end. It took me all but 17 minutes to do my test. Once you are done the proctor prints off your results, that is the most frieghtened that I have been in a long time. I finished college three years ago so I was real rusty. I would suggest to all of you to take it ASAP after graduation. I took a week off from work to study for this exam. Good luck to all of you. Lori |
