Jay in Georgia in Watkinsville, Georgia said: I took the MT exam today thru the AAB. It was on the same level as the ASCP. I took Basic Knowledge, Chem and Hema. You have to study well to pass it. Review your math well because you cant use a calculator. Ex is What amount of NaCl is needed to make 800 mL or a 0.85% solution? Ex-calculate coefficient of variation. Jay-THANK YOU FOR ANSWERING THE FREAKING QUESTION!! Much appreciated information. |

My understanding is that they will allow you to take the generalist exam twice. AAB exam was hard.. I took this feb.. but hoping for the best, goodluck to us..results next week, waiting in the mailbox.:-) God bless.. |

Three books are needed to pass this test.
I studied all three to pass my test in Microbiology. The ASCP Q/A book was very helpful IMO. Make flash cards, take mock tests, study for at least 2 hours every day. Also, if you don't pass, don't lose hope. Just sign up for the next one and you'll be fine. Some of the questions are reused again too. |

ASCP is widely recognized in USA so that is the best but check job posting in hospitals, local newspapers , indeed.com or where ever you can find for your states of choice. If they say requirement is ASCP or equivalent it is ok to have AAB. You will get paid on the basis of your knowledge (have to negotiate during interview), experience (HR and hiring manager decides it) and their need

I am preparing the AAB exam in all 5 areas and I am so confused, I don’t know if I need to memorize all reactions, all reference ranges, etc. from a to z, is there something that I need to pay more attention, and something less? Please, if you can, explain more how you were studying. I am planning to study just from the review books from AAB , Per handbook, Q and Answers, and the Basic Knowledge, but still it is a lot. Thank you and good luck with your career. |

With all the talk about the doctorate degree (DCLS) you have to wonder why it is taking so long. Writer Glen McDaniel has written a blog about how we shouldnt wait for the DCLS. This is on the ADVANCE websiye. Here is the link. Why you should not wait for the DCLS community.advanceweb.com/blogs/mt_2/archive/2011/08/13/why-you-shouldn-t-wait-for-the-dcls.aspx |

Buck in Nashville, Tennessee said: California has the higest wages for MT thus far, they just started using MLT, lets see how far the wages will drop in the coming years. You know what, I work at 2 hospitals in Iowa and they both accept the AAB. One lab director is ASCP and he does the hiring and said I would get the pay difference. What is the difference of AAB or AMT? Most hospitals accept AMT to get people from different countries here and AAB is better than AMT. AAB does our proficiency testing, so if they are good enough for that, they are good enough to get a MT license through. |

I had never heard of the AAB until recently. I have a bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science but was unable to complete my internship due to personal reasons. I have 3 children now & have been done w/college for years but I would like to finish what I started (I am back to work as a phleb already w/PBT (ASCP)). Under my particular circumstances, the MLT (AAB) provisional is my only option unless I am chosen again for an internship (I have not applied). I just want to work as a tech. Any advice? Will any hospital in MI accept the MLT(AAB)? I guess it really doesn't matter if they don or not b/c I have no other choice. I am just happy that I am able to take this one. How difficult is the MLT (AAB) exam? |

I TOOK MY ASCP MLT EXAM RIGHT AFTER GRADUATION AND PASSED. I HAVE WORKED A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AS A TECH AND AM STUDYING FOR MY MT THROUGH AAB. MY HOSPITAL DOES OFFER AN ATTRACTIVE RAISE TO MTs AND THEY RECOGNIZE AAB....MY ADVICE...RESEARCXH PLACES YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK AND GO FROM THERE...IF YOU CAN MAKE THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY BY SIMPLY CHALLENGING THE BOARD EXAM THEN DO SO...IM TAKING THAT ROUTE SO THAT I CAN BE PAID WHILE I FINISH MY BS. |

I am an MLT Military trained with an associates degree in laboratory science. The ASCP says I must complete my bachelors which I am pursueing and then complete 2 years of full time rotation thru each section of the lab. This will of course take me 3 years to accomplish since I am working 3 days only a week in order to finish my bachelors. So here it is all you full of your self jerks. ( You know who you are ) I am going to take the AAB and according to CLIA standards this will allow my company to place me on the MT payscale which is higher than the MLT pay scale both of which are weighted on experience. I plan on furthering this plan by comleting my rotation on a higher pay scale and completing the ASCP( MLS) please dont be mad at people who with to challenge the AAB MT exam who do not currently have their bachelors. The fact of the matter is that in order to make some further career momentum they mush get their bachelors. Also, the military is no shortcut and how dare you sir. the man who was bad-mouthing the prospect of military education as some sort of cowardice. |
