Anyone please? And what is AMT? Is it a licensure also like CLS or ASCP? Is there a state that allows AMT only? I just saw it on other post. Cause in Cali only Licensed CLS can work. Thanks guys!

If you are not qualified to take the ASCP, You can not take it.

But the ASCP is national certification so the guidelines are a bit more specific. You may be able to be certified for just a specific state, like NY or CA.

Hi CLS in Vegas. I'm a foreign graduate. I got my ASCPi last October 2011 and got a job on April 2012. Its just the same as ASCP but youre just foreign graduate, some hospital or lab would acknowledge your credentials and hire you as Medical Technologist (ASCPi). Just keep applying and somebody will hire you (I just got 6 months clinical training when I applied) so dont loose hope! :)

Hi there! Did you apply for the NYS license and took the exam via ASCP before you got to work in NY while holding a (MT)ASCPi certificate? I took my ASCPi in the Philippines last 2011 and moved here to NY early this year. Right now I am planning to apply for the NYS license and NYS don't consider/acknowledge my ASCPi cert. I was told I still have to take the exam and it seems it doesn't mean I would get an ASCP cert if I pass it since taking the ASCP exam have requirements for eligibility too.

Healthcare Recruiter in Chula Vista, California

Welcome to the US and please take these comments at face value - I recruit for MT / MLT positions as well as Lab Directors and various other hospital positions from staff to C-suite. In order for the best hiring outcomes, the ASCP credential is deemed higher than the AMT. I have worked with a significant amount of hospitals and from a practicality measure, the Lab Directors / Managers / HR feels the ASCP credential yields a more consistent Technologist/Technician.

That stated, as far as where to work and what states and hospital is really a case-by-case situation. If you are looking for a position - feel free to reply to me. I am recruiting for qualified, MT/MLTs.

Hi, I recently got my CA CLS license(Generalist) and then somehow my family(including me) has decided to move to New York for certain reasons next month. I went to the NYS licensing website if ever they can consider reciprocating my CA license and then I found out that they require ASCP certification and doesn't recognize ASCPi, it seems that they really won't consider it.For me it's BS! And now, I just want to ask if anyone of you guys from NY, have the experience or knew someone who have a similar case like mine. Can I find a job in NY MLS/CLS related but non-licensed?

You can send all your education information to new york state education department. They will evaluate it, let you know can you take a test for license or not. Nothing relate to ascp or ascpi. This is how I got my ny license by my Taiwan education in 2014.

Standard Pathway Education requirements

You must document that you have either:
A. Received a Bachelor's or higher degree in clinical laboratory technology (or a related title) from: ◦ a program registered by the Department as licensure qualifying at the time of graduation (A list of licensure-qualifying programs can be found on the Inventory of Registered Programs under "CLIN LAB TECHNOL"); or
◦ a program that is determined by the Department to be the substantial equivalent of a registered program in clinical laboratory technology that is accredited by an acceptable accrediting agency or recognized by the appropriate civil authorities of the jurisdiction in which the program is offered as a program that prepares individuals for professional practice as a clinical laboratory technologist, and is designed and conducted by the degree-granting institution to prepare graduates to practice as clinical laboratory technologists using independent judgment and responsibility.
