what is the typical Clinical Laboratory Science Track for a masters degree? I am looking for an ONLINE masters program. Anything that has to do with laboratory science or maybe something I can use in research. Something that can bring in the $$$.
Thanks

Have you considered taking Molecular Biology courses? It is a rapidly growing field. There are lots of biotech companies in California, so that might be something to think about. If you have any MolB-related questions, let me know.

Glad I could help. I love molecular biology! I'm not familiar with that program, but I can take a look at it for you. UNC is an excellent school, and I, myself, am taking classes through their online Epi program (UNC School of Public Health). I have been very happy with the quality of courses I have taken so far.

The program curriculum (www.med.unc.edu/ahs/clinical/mds/mds-curriculum) looks pretty good. I think covers most of the things I have encountered in my current job. However, based on my own experiences, I feel like the program should include more molecular biology material such as a molecular genetics course. Even though there are two clinical rotations, I feel like there could be more hands-on teaching lab time because there are so many different molecular techniques, and new ones are being developed all the time. It seems like the program is mainly online, but each semester you have to spend one week on campus. UNC is also quite pricy for out-of-state students - the non-resident tuition for the Masters in Molecular Diagnostic Science (MMDS)program is $779.02 per one credit hour. The program is 38 credit hours.
Let me know if I can help you with anything else.

I wouldn't bother getting a masters in CLS unless you wanted to teach. I honestly would work as a generalist for a year or two to see how you like it then specialize maybe. See if you like management and get a MHA or MBA. Only way you are going to "bank it" in the lab is by opening your own lab, working major OT, or moving to management level. Good luck.

The Masters degree is worthless, wait to for the DCLS programs to come out. Check out one of the threads it has a link to all the schools that offer the program.

DCLS will be the professional doctorate of clinical lab science, opens lots of doors, I feel it will create more standards.

I just wish they would start already, I am in the process of talking my GREs this summer and I would love to go to the UT san antonio schools, they are suppose to open up Sept 2011 according to Dr. Smith.

I have a "wait-and-see" attitude towards the DCLS at this point. To be fair I have not researched it much at this point, but I have read some of the threads. Sounds like the field is split 50/50 on it extremely pro and extremely con. It would be great if they could offer online programs. Have you heard any talk of online programs yet?

I have not heard of any programs offered online, but I believe they can be clinical director after completion of the program. If you have your MD, DO, PHD, you can be clinical director of the lab.

Very interesting. I have thought about starting up my own lab for the past few years. Last year at the Beckman training center in Miami I met a mother/daughter team of MTs who started up thier own reference labs. Very cool stuff. The reason I bring this up is because one of the issues I ran into was figuring out who I would use as the medical director. If I had my DCLS I would be set. :)

Exactly a friend that works with me, his dad runs a private lab, he does VERY well. He is lucky enough to have his best friend who is a DO that has his name on every test. He doesn't charge that much so his Dad keep a good chunk of the profits.

He does mostly drug screens for local school districts and last year he netted over >100k. He is encouraging his son to get into the DCLS program so he doesn't need his bf to sign off anymore.

I am telling you a professional doctorate open ALOT of doors. I jus want the programs to start already!

THey already have DCLS programs running in MI, MA, and DC I believe and are opening up more this year (2010) through partnering universities: Texas universites (UT health center and UT medical branch), MI state: U of MA, and Med.college of georgia: St louis university.

accredited doctoral programs

PhD: Biomedical science w/track in MLS. Northeastern University, Boston, MA

PhD: CLS. Catholic University of America. Washington, DC

I hope this helps

I recently registered with Michigan State University to take their Molecular Diagnostics Certification Program which is all online except the last semester. It is 3 semesters total, 2 credits each, at a cost of appr $1300 per semester. The last semester is 1 week at the university doing hands on testing. I have been an MT for 27 years and want to get into the new age with molecular since that's the state of the art technology that more and more physicians are wanting.

I believe there is huge gap in the laboratory career ladder, from phlebotomist, to MLT, to MT, to doctorate director. There are numerous programs that assist MLT in obtaining their MT degree on a part-time basis or through distance learning, but there is a lack of bridge program that will assist those who currently employed to go from phlebotomist to MLT or from MT to doctorate director unless they become a full-time student and gave up their full time job.
I am hoping to see DCLS graduate be able to compete for post-doc internship position and become board certify doctoral level scientists/director with a nationally recognized accrediting agency in areas like clinical chemistry (ABCC), immunology (ABMLI), microbiology (ABM), molecular (ABMG), histocompatibility (ABHI) and toxicology (ABFT). As far as I know there is a shortage of doctoral level scientists due to retirement and shortage of trainees. The DCLS would provide CLS a way to gain entrance into those post-doc program without giving up their full-time job and increase the quality of applicants applying to those programs.

Hi everybody,
I'm planning on applying to CLS programs at SFSU and SJSU. I'm working on my personal statement, I would appreciate it if you give me some insights on what to emphasize on more so I can get into those program. Those programs are really competitive.

That sounds like you'll be fine. Heck you might even want to think about Pharmacy/Optometry/PA with those grades as the pay is better...

You're gonna need to either do serious overtime or get into management (i.e. become a supervisor then get a masters/MBA in healthcare) to make a lot of $$ with this field...

I think your gpa is good. I would just focus on why you want to go into the lab vs other healthcare fields. Have u completed all the prereqs? Where'd u go for undergrad?
