travlinghart in bacolod, Philippines said: oh so MS in biology not in medical technology.. yes co'z i was a bit puzzled thinking that you have a masters in med. tech. yet work as a technician in a clinical lab. It can be a bit confusing. In many countries, a Lab Technician works under the supervision of the Lab Technologist. Yet in some regions, they refer to MTs as Lab Technician. Medical Technologists are also referred to as Clinical Lab Scientists or Biomedical Scientists. |

Thanks Sajjad, really appreciate your help. I entered the one year course of medical laboratory technician program in Centennial college HP Science and Technology and now I am at the end of 2 semester. My 3 semester will involve a clinical placement in a hospital for 6 weeks. After graduating I will be able to write OSMT exam as well as CSMLS exam. And after that I will look for a job.
I wish luck to those who are at the beginning of the path. However, as a person who had 7 years of studying from back home I realized that learning is continuous process of giving and taking knowledge in order to master yourself and help others which will last all your life. Be prepared and equipped for that and don't forget a positive attitude which will be of great use in a long run. With best wishes

Hi Harry, If you could read the information above you got the idea what to do.
I don't know if you have Centennial college in Alberta, but try to find a community college with a medical technician program, cause private colleges are all about ripping off. I wish you good luck and feel free to ask anytime

Harry in Calgary, Alberta said: Hi Mr. Suri Hey Harry firstly I want to let you know I am a woman)))) so no MR. Suri. On top of the diploma you have in medical laboratory science you have to possess 80 hours of laboratory experience in Canada including 20 phlebotomy procedures and 10 ECGs. You may find this information if you follow this link www.osmt.org/content/index.php?pid=7&cid=53 So you need first to evaluate your diploma and get Canadian experience, only then you may apply, if not you should finish one of the approved by OSMT colleges and pass the OSMT exam. You also may find related information on OSMT site. Don't be shy, just call them up and ask about whatever concerns you have. Best of luck.

shruti in Whitby, Ontario said: hi mr. suri Hi, If you want to continue studying then this link will help. www.osmt.org/content/index.php?pid=7&cid=56 Go to the medical laboratory technologist program at the bottom of the page After graduating from one of these program you will be able to write CSMLS exam for technologists and if you pass you will be certified member of CMLTO. If you want to work as technician you need to pass either OSMT and CSMLS exams for technicians and find a job in Toronto. I am also currently looking for a job and in the meantime preparing for those technician exams. Good luck |

Sorry to hear your story, but I knew someone from India with the same problem and she needed the hours to do the upgrade also.Unfortunately she had to go back to school that's were we both met. We finish the program in 8 mths and 1 mth on practical placement and we are both going to do the OSMT exam in november. We went to everest but if you don't want to go there you can find another school and go but you are not going to find anywhere in Ontario to do what you want in such a short time.

The most important skill employers are looking for is english communication. I have worked with Med Lab hiring managers who will take someone with great communication skills and train them in phelbotomy and hire them right into their labs, without a degree or diploma. Community colleges will give you that extra time to build your communication skills you need to take advanatage of those soft skill electives while attending, and go out and find a part-time SALES job even if it means selling shoes at the mall. The communication and CSR skills you will pick up are priceless. Meeting and selling will build your confidence and people skills, you will be amazed at what you will learn. You could have all the paper in the world but if you cannot read the person who is interviewing you for a potential employment opportunity you will never get hired. Practice selling to others in order to sell yourself to employers!!! |

Hi, I hope I can help you guys out. Here's how I got my H1B visa. I graduated in the Philippines with a BS degree in Medical Technologist then came here in California as a tourist and took the CLS exam 4 years ago (you can also take the ASCP). After I passed, I applied for a job in Quest Diagnostics and luckily got the job but then I still had to go back to the Philippines to get my Visa Screen so it took me another year to get everything done before I started working. If you already have the requirements to apply for a job, I suggest to check their website www.questdiagnostics.com and look for a job in San Juan Capistrano area because that's where they hire newly graduates or H1B sponsored CLSs. (Take note: they only sponsor CLSs.) I have few coworkers from India but they're not CLS yet (they're working as lab associate) even though they're doctors in India. I've heard that some of them are still missing some units that they need to take in college or they have to go through the CLS program which Quest Diagnostics offers too. That CLS program is a one year program which you have to deal with laboratory works supervised by a CLS trainer and I've heard they pay you $11/hour (which I don't think is not bad since you get paid while you're in the program) and after that, you will work as a lab associate and pay you around $24 then once you passed your CLS exam, they will hire you as a CLS specialist, not generalist (depending on your major) and pay you around $30. Good luck guys!:) |

Why dont you try another country besides the US? Try Canada, Australia, the UAE. The US is going through the worse recession than the great depression, just take a look at community colleges and universites, they have TRIPLED in enrollment. This is because they want a stable job, hence more people are getting into the allied fields, nursing, xray, lab. There is no need for a hospital to sponser anyone anymore, UNLESS YOU WANT TO LIVE IN KANSAS. There are plenty of US grads. My hospital has stopped given out visas for the past 3 yrs b/c we had so many people apply to vacant positions. This will go on for many years or they may never start back up again |

Not only is there an overabundance of US candidates competing for American jobs, but also, after 9/11 USCIS has come up with stricter rules and policies. It's much more difficult for companies to justify sponsoring foreigners for H1Bs or Green Cards, and the process takes months to years. It might be a little bit easier, if you were already here on a student visa. You could see if anyone would be willing to sponsor you for an OPT (Optional Training Permit) to get your foot in the door. After an OPT, the employer might be willing to sponsor you for an H1B. |

Hi, CLS-tere Can I ask you sth about the breakdown number of student lab study and clinical intership hours. They sent me the letter to my school few months ago. Now they sent it again. I guessed I am the first student who applied for Visa Screen in my school, they don't have idea about how to do it. Obviously, CGFNS wasn't satisfied about the material we sent. Now I am trying to figure out what they want. Do you have any idea about student lab study hours? Does that include both theory and lab hours, or just lab hours? |

But I really want to move to America, mostly the east coast.
Is it true then I can obtain a H1-B visa because medical technologists are listed on this scheme. this costs 1000's of dollars as Im sure I need the optimum package to process this quickly, then do I just look through the company I applied for the visa with for sponsorship jobs It all seems so very daunting to me so any advice would be greatly appreciated I feel as though I am well qualified to work I just want to make sure I go about this right. so if anyone has any advice please help! |

eagerbiomed in Dublin, Ireland said: Thank you so much for your help I REALLY appreciate it! its me on a different user name If you think (well check their requirements)your visa screen will pretty much be approved based on what current prof license you have and your credentials (well don't know exactly what you have) apply for visa screen while you are prepairing for the ASCPi exams or while you schedule yourself for the exam. Remember you need a passing band score for your english test when you apply for the visa screen. I believe English is one of your major languages in Ireland but I'm not sure if you can apply for excemption and just have a certification that you speak the language.
