You know most of the job posting say ASCP preferred, plus AMT is not recognized in some state.

ASCP= work everywhere in the US

Then why has AMT been so successful over the years? Maybe their success is the reason ASCP is trying to gain more power by attempting a monopoly with NCA. Maybe the ASCP fears AMT and encourages your brainwashing.

What success has AMT had? If that certification was so successful it would be recognized everywhere in the US. So if you want to work in new york or California you are SOL with your AMT, but I forgot AMT is so successful.....

My argument was people without ASCP, AMT, NCA can work
in New York if they are licensed by the State. Same in
California, Florida, Indiana, Hawaii, Georgia, Iowa,
MN, Las Vegas, etc. etc.

As long as you have ASCP, you can work in Hawaii, I do. You don't need to take the state test as long as you submit proof of having ASCP certification.

Just went to the AMT site, the laboratory experience qualification requirements are kinda flimsy. It seems as if anyone can sit for the exam as long as they have a degree and worked in some kind of lab. That doesn't seem right.

You don't haave to be working in some prestigious lab to get qualified becoz the reason of taking the exam is to get qualified anyway. So i dont find anything wrong with that. It's just some people are so conceited just because they want to boast whatever distinction they have now.

Personally, i believe AMT is a good certifying agency, bcoz of AMT im able to land a job here in the US at Johns Hopkins and I'm proud of that.. This is my 1st certification I've taken here when I arrived in the US.. and i had a job in just two months.. :)

And nxt to AMT lies my ASCP certification which I've taken last May 21.. and successfully passed.. See? AMT or ASCP.. no difference..they still have almost the same MT questions..

If you graduate from a acres MT program in the US, the ASCP is the certification that the curriculum is based on. Talk to any program director they will tell you the same thing. Once they started recruiting from overseas, the AMT came into play.

That is why most lab directors or department supervisors have their ASCP. Some states do not recognize the AMT, most jobs say ASCP preferred.

The ASCP requirements are more stringent than the AMT, so that is why directors and department supervisors know what they look for when they hire, they look for the same credentials as their own.

Jeff,
I'm not close minded really, I honestly believe that the lab requirements for AMT are very vague. My brother who is an MD, PHD is a genetic researcher who heads his own lab could probably sit for the AMT but he would not be able to sit for the ASCP OR NCA. All I am saying is that the lab requirements for AMT are vague, I am not saying anything bad or downing it so don't get so defensive.

I am AMT certified but unfortunately it is not recognized in CA. Just wanted to share my experience about AMT, AAB and ASCPi certification exam. Hope all this would help. I took both to get the CA licensure figuring since im gonna rack my brains out for the CA license I might as well try to pass both at once. If I fail one I still have another chance. Of course it entailed more from my pocket. But who cares, Ifor me it’s a little investment compared to what you get as a CLS.

First, YOU REALLY HAVE TO STUDY whichever exam you decide to take.

AAB exam – very very easy. But irony is I missed giving attention to the minor details and basics of being a CLS while studying. I was even laughing to myself while I was taking the exam. The questions were mostly the basics and the kind that you take for granted while studying, not expecting they would be thrown at you in the exam. Its actually even easier than the AMT exam.

ASCPi (which is just ASCP without US laws and regulations) – was also very easy but in a much different way. Most of the questions are just presented in a way that at first glance/read it seems confusing. But the answers are all there in your head (if you did your part studying) and right in front of your eyes on the screen. There were some basic questions too. But with the way the exam is programmed, if you get the basic and easy questions the computer will give you a more challenging question. If you get it, then you’re thrown an even more challenging one. It gets more complex and more in depth and more challenging as you keep giving the right answers. So the harder the questions get, you can have some assurance that you are doing good. If you

AMT – was sorta in between AAB and ASCP. Some basics and challenging questions, but not much of the analysis type.

Here’s my two cents on the feedback that most people give about ASCP/ASCPi that its very difficult. It DOESN’T help others who are planning to or about to take the ASCP/ASCPi exam. Coz it instills in them the fear. Once fear is ahead of them, it’s like a cloud that masks the easy questions presented as confusing and difficult. With a very relaxed, open mind you can very well see through the questions and analyze them and the answers will just flow naturally out from the bank of knowledge you filled up your brain.

For me there are only 2 reasons ASCP/ASCPi would be really difficult. One, you haven’t studied enough and failed. Two, it got difficult as you kept getting the easier questions and it got even more challenging but you passed coz you studied enough or more than enough.

If you go for AAB buy their reviewer and question and answer material. If you go for ASCP, study the basics and go in depth about every topic. Helpful practice for the challenging questions for ASCP/ASCPi would be Clinical Laboratory Science Review by Robert Harr and Quick Review Q & A’s by Valerie Polansky. For AMT I used several books I couldn’t really remember all (took it last 2005).

Regarding the application process for becoming CA CLS hope these would help.
CA LFS – apply with them as soon as you decide to be a CLS. Don’t wait for their approval before you apply for ASCP/ASCPi and AAB.

With experiences of friends and acquaintances, some if not most had to reapply and pay the fee again. Why? LFS processes your application for about 4 months after you submit your application. With some of my friends it took 5 months. Upon getting you approval from LFS they tell you you have 150 days SINCE START OF YOUR APPLICATION to submit to them your certification from either ASCP or AAB. Now since they process it 4 or 5 months you hardly have enough time to apply for and take either AAB or ASCP/ASCPi.

a. I set a target date of August 15 the latest for passing both AAB and ASCPi. Then I tried to time it well. March 15, I applied for LFS. By August 15 the latest (150 days) I would have their approval. – got LFS approval July 17 which means I only have less than a month from application start date to submit to them a certification (AAB or ASCP/ASCPi)

b. May 15 I applied for ASCPi (they take only about 1 month to process). All I had to submit to them with the online application was my Philippine PRC license number. By June I got their approval. I was given 3 months to take the exam from then. I took the exam last July 24.
- if you apply for ASCP I think (im not sure) how one has to go about timing they processing time.

c. May 15 I applied for AAB (took them about 1 month to process). Application by snail mail. I applied for AAB certification and not AAB for CA CLS. Coz if I applied for AAB CA CLS I would have to wait for LFS approval before I can do so. Fee is a little bit higher though. They only have 2-3 exams scheduled per year. By late June I got their approval. Took longer they said coz they had to verify previous employer from Pinas. I took exam last July 17. Results wont come til about 4-6 weeks after exam.

July 24 I passed ASCPi.

btw, a review class also helped me. a little more investment if you have the budget or can squeeze it in your budget. i recommend the american medical academy. here is their website. their number is there. ask for joy miller or trini miller. they are so nice. it's not just a review class, they also offer you help and support in other aspects of becoming a cls. here is their website www.americanmedicalacademy.org/clsmt.php if they ask where you got information about them you can say "lori" posted it on the website. nothing id get from it really, but just my way of thanking them for their help and support.
