I worked as an Medical Technologist for about 3-3.5 years. I have a AAS in Medical Laboratory Technology and a BS in Chemistry. I left the healthcare industry to go into the pharmaceutical industry were I resided for 7 years. I am now laid off and want to get back into the health care industry. Alot of things have changed while I was gone. I have no idea how I stack up against the "NYS review process". Method 10 seems my best route but I'm not real confident. I have friends who are MLT's but they know very little about the process. Employers want a license before they consider you. Do I have to just "fly blind" and send my "best guess" to NYS or is there some place to get guidance with this? |

At the web site www.op.nysed.gov, under clinical laboratory technologist their are the license General Requirements. There are ten pathways under which you can apply, some are easy to decide how you compare against, some are well... You will only be accepted or denied against the method you choose. So if I try for method 9 but get denied, even if I would have been accepted for method 10 the state won't review you against those criteria until you resubmit for that pathway. Besides I have all kinds of other issues like one hospital I worked at is now closed and the school I got my AAS in MLT at no longer offers the program. I will try to contact some of the Lab Managers in my area and see if they have any experience with the state regulations, so I can be reasonably confident in what I send them instead of it being a game of craps. |

Just an update. I contacted 6 MT program directors and six NYS universities and the consensus was that this process was too new to make any predictions. So I sent my paperwork to the state with my best bet as to which pathway was best. Three weeks later I got a letter telling me to go the ASCP website and sign up for the MT test. Pretty easy. Only issue now is if I want ASCP cert for taking the MT test (otherwise I would just get NYS license for passing the test) I have to process paperwork through them also and ASCP requirements are a little different than NYS's. |
