I don't know anyone who has taken the exam (I'll sit it in February), but someone teaching blood-banking in Saskatoon told me the test is "big" on safety. The CSMLS publishes a Laboratory Safety Manual that they'll send you for about $15 US. I'm studying it as well as the usual stuff.

The rumors are true. 5-10% of the exam is safety. Look at the exam weighting list in the handbook and you will have a better idea what to study.

I took the general exam last week. I relied on study books for the ASCP exam. If you go to Amazon.com and search for ASCP registry exam study guides you'll find several. (ASCP is the US counterpart to the CSMLS.)

There were a few things I wish I'd know before taking the exam:

1. Reference ranges for chemistry tests are sometimes given in mmol/L where we use mg/dl in the US.

2. They use the term "normoblast" on the test, while we don't generally use that term in the US.

3. There were several questions about processing tissues that weren't covered in the correspondence course the CSMLS had me take. (Med. Techs don't do generally histology in the US. We have histotechs that do that.) Having experience would have helped a lot.

I don't know of any bad study guides for the ASCP exam. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is the McClatchey Clinical Laboratory Medicine (www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=clinical+laboratory+medicine). It's an excellent reference, but I think it's written by doctors for doctors and not for students. It's not "geared toward the exam".
My favorite guide was Clinical Laboratory Science Review by Robert R. Harr. It's on the Amazon page link above, but the BOR book is excellent too.

I am new to this forum ,but I guess given the fact that you have done the exam before, you might be able to help.I hoping to challenge the CSMLS exam in Oct.Just want to know exactly what other way would you have prepared for the exam if you have to do it again.

Just 2 minor things:
I'd learn the chemistry normal ranges in IU's per litre, not mg/dl as the Americans know them.
I'd get used to the term, 'normoblast'.

I have a question for you. I'm curious as to why you'd want to leave Ireland for Canada. I'm going because I believe in universal health care, but you already have that, I think.

Also, if you wind up in the Victoria, BC area, look for me. I'll be working at either Vic General, Royal Jubilee, or the Saanich Hospital. (I have the job offer, but we'll decide which opening to take when my work permit comes through.)

Thanks for the quick response. You are right we do have ''universal health care''here ,but my motivations are more than that alone.I hope you do not mind me asking a few more question as I prepare for this exam because the practise here in Ireland is just a single discipline(though I particapate in the on-call rota)which is a generalist practice.Which book did you use to prepare?Goodluck with your offer and the work permit.

OK. Here are the books I used in order of helpfulness in my opinion:
1. Clinical Laboratory Science Review, Third Edition by Robert R. Harr
2. Board of Registry Study Guide 4th edition, published by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (the outfit that certifies lab techs in the US)
3. Quick Review Cards for Clinical Laboratory Science Examinations by Valerie Dietz Polansky

I was also required to take a correspondence course in histology from an institute in Alberta. I don't recommend that course since the study materials were full of errors and inconsistancies. This was required because in the US histology is a separate discipline.

When you say it's usually a "single discipline" in Ireland, so you mean some people just study hematology or microbiology and just do that? It's interesting to hear how lab work is done in different countries, isn't it?

Not exactly,Med Tech training in the UK and Ireland are the same. The training involves all areas of Med Lab Science but students generally Majored in a paticular subject and subsquently become a specialist in that field. For example I have worked all my life in Clinical Microbiology though worked out of hours(on-call) in other field as well. Are you willing to let go or trade up those materials you used in preparing for the exam?Thank you again for prompt responses.

Sorry, but I'm going to hang on to my study guides for review purposes. You can get them from Amazon.com or any similar bookstore. I did a search on amazon.com on something like "ASCP Certification Exam Study Guide". The books I used aren't very expensive.

We don't major in a particular area in the US, but I guess the specialization is similar here for day shift. I usually work evening shift stat lab. Except for day shift in all but the largest hospitals we tend to work all departments with the exception of microbiology. Organism ID tends to get left to the day shift specialists.

Thanks Carole, I will google Amazon and get those stuff.I guessed it was really easy to get a job after passing the exam?If I can ask why do you need a work permit and not opt for Canadian Permanet Residence stuff>?

Yeah, the job was easy once I got the attention of Vancouver Island Health Authority. Email didn't work, but a phone call did.

After working for a year permanent residence (or landed emmigrant) status is easier to get, so we're going that route. Also a work permit is cheaper and faster.

You don't need to google amazon. Just type Amazon.com in the address box at the top of your browser.

Good luck to you. In which part of Canada do you plan to hope to settle?

I am interested in leaving the US and relocating to Ireland. My father was born in Ireland but came to the US in 1944. What are the requirements for Med Tech in Ireland. I have national registries, plus bachelor of science in Medical Technology. Is it difficult to find a position? I am a generalist with a preference in Blood Bank. Should you be interested in relocating to the US, I know I could find you a position. Kay

Hello Kay,
First of all you will need to register with the ''Academic of Medical Laboratory Sciences'here in order to be considered employeable as Med Tech. The webpage of the academic is <www.amls.ie>.In term of jobs, there are very limited oppurtunites here at the moment due to the global recession. To be honest with you there is embargo on recruitment of medical and alied health professional in the public sector. However endeavour to complete your state registration with the Academy and wait for the oppurtunity to come up.If interested I can provide link to some privately owned hospital and laboratory that are still advertisng jobs. Are there jobs for Med Tech where you are and what is the pay like?

Thank you so much for the response. I thought that might be the situation with the economy is such a mess. I am in Austin,TX,which is the capitol of our state. Additionally, Austin is the home of the University of Texas which is an enormous school. For that reason, we have a great many med tech positions open all the time. Remember, we do not have a national health service so there are many, many hospitals-mostly, for profit organizations. The average wage for med techs is between 20-25.00 dollars base pay. That does not include all the various differentials for working evenings, night and/or weekends.
Currently, we have 12 hospitals in Austin which is not that large a city. San Antonio is within 150 miles and they probably have another 15 or so hospitals. San Antonio is a very large city. If you are interested in the states, let me know, and I can check around for you. Texas is not suffering too terribly with the econony. As a matter of fact, many people are coming from California and New York because of our economy. let me know. Thank you, again, for the response. Kay
