Does anyone know the requirements or qualifications process for becoming a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist in the UK (Britian)? Are there accrediting organizations that award licenses, like the American ASCP, AMT, or NCA?

Thanks,

-Tim

Hi, if anyone ever does find the requirements for working as a medical technologist in Britain, could you also let me know? I am currently licensed as a tech in Canada, and have passed the certification exam for the ASCP.

i'm not from uk, but interested in working over there. i will have an ASCP certification this august and looking. all that i've found is that medical technologists are called biomedical scientists in uk and there's a lot of hoops you have to through to become registered if you didn't go to school there. lemme know if anyone finds anything.

they are called biomedical scientists in the UK. You must get accreditation with the HPC, the IBMS provide information about qualifications which you will need so best to go to their website. www.ibms.org

I too am interested in working overseas as a clinical laboratory scientist. I checked out some job postings online and the average salary I've seen for biomedical scientists in the UK is approx 35,000 pounds/year. Is this enough to live in a city like London?

Hi Guys,
What you need to do is send all your qualifications (Academic Degrees) to NARIC www.naric.org.uk/ so that they can tell you what the equivalent is to the degrees here... you will need this when you apply to the HPC which is like the ASCP...
When you apply with the HPC make sure you go through the international way... so apply for the HPC international registation
apply through this link www.hpc-uk.org/apply/international/
when you have your qualifiction from another country they mostly take into account your work experience... so if you have worked in the UK it would be a big plus...The application fee is aroun 400£ or more so make sure that you supply as much information as possible to support your application. If you follow the two links above it should give you all the information you need... Good Luck!!
