Congrats Rohan, I have been following your posts for two years. Congrats on passing ASCP and getting your job. We are next generation of medical technologists(I still have to pass my exam) and we have more of a chance to come together and push for reforms that can put our field in the spotlight. Keep your chin up, despite negativity that you may encounter!

There are hardly any negativity at the place I work at, even from Nurses or Doctors. I really am enjoying my career, I think it was just clinicals and school that kind of gets you down because your never paid for the rotations. This is very easy work.

Hey Rohan I'm going to UMDNJ for 15 months to get a CLS degree and have a choice to intern at various hospitals and was going to choose to intern in the city. Are $28-30/hr salaries common at the hospitals in the city?

is the pay as bad as everyone says?? i am in my 3rd year of college will prolly graduate in winter 2013 then i have to do my intership, so prolyl wont start working for another 2 years, but i will graduate hopefully with no loans, my car is paid off this year, and i will stay with my parents until i can save enough money. but everyone here seems to be treating like theyre making $10!! is 20-25 an hour really that bad?

I've been working temp jobs with my B.S. in Biology and would love a stable 20-25 an hour job with benefits. With no loans or bills you shouldn't have to move back in with your parents on that salary. I'm doing CLS for that reason (and have parents both in the NYC area and Cali where pay is higher than what you've stated)I've heard however pay increases in this field aren't the best, so many people with years of experience might find themselves with a mediocre salary down the road. You might want to get a part-time MBA later on though if you wanna work your way into management.

CLS 2013!

What do people feel is the best graduate degree to be considered for a Lab management position? An MBA, Masters of Clinical Research Management, or a Masters in Health administration? Or possibly another degree option I did not mention? I cant wait forever for the DCLS and would like to get ahead of others for consideration for a management position.

I have a question, what is the difference from a mono and lymph?

Anyone that confuses a mono with a lymph is retarded. I am in an mlt program and we had to do normal/abnormal diffs till our eyes were bleeding. I am an excellent tech, smarter than most MT's. It is a shame you try and make yourself feel better by putting us down. Urine microscopy I am a pro I love seeing all that E.coli floating around. Mac, CNA, BAP plates with a .001 loop. Greater than 100,000 small gray entire probably entero, get the pyr out. What staph latex? ok neg? lets do a tube coag to make sure. Don't want that S. aureus getting away as a CNSS. HMMM Out of linearity better make a dilution. See where I'm getting at standards haven't been lowered, there is just more opportunites. I would never ask my parents to get loan in excess of 100,000 so I could my MT degree that crazy when i can get an AAS for 15,000 work for two years while obtaining a BA, and the sit for my MT at a fraction of the cost. More than one way to do things. And all this 19.50 an hour isn't good money, 47K is very much???? Really go to Lowe's and see if you make 19.50/hr NOT A CHANCE!!!!! open your eyes ppl. Be happy you get to eat today.

Starting salaries in Manhattan seem to be around 25-27/hour at most hospitals (hematology and blood bank). Other than 10% shift differentials, some also offer $1/hr ASCP differentials (since you only legally need the NY license). This is based on very recent offers I have seen from 3 major hospitals here.

MLTs aren't really hired at the major hospitals at NYC from what I've, and if they are limited in what they can do.

Thank God for NY's regulations. If only Jersey were the same...
