Wow! Congrats! So do you find the book of Anna ciulla more helpful since its easier to understand than other books like Harr? Though almost everybody suggested Harr. Please..Need your advise..Thanks

I passed with ciulla, but if I would be in your case, i will read the 2 books, ciulla and harr. there is no harm reading or reviewing more books. at least 2 so not not to confuse your study. good luck to you.

are you taking the ASCP for CA CLS licensure? i higly recommend the American Medical Academy (AMA) CLS review classes. helped me a lot in passing both the ASCPi and AAB certification exams just last july 2009. now i'm working as a CLS and currently interviewing for a much better CLS job. the AMA review class is a worthy investment for your becoming a CLS. you can check out their website www.americanmedicalacademy.org/clsmt.php. don't delay. i heard their class is starting this sunday, sept 13.

may you be blessed and pass the ASCP exam.

Don't worry. Just be sure that you have met all their requirements needed before applying for ASCP, otherwise, you will not be eligible to sit for the exam. And fees are non-refundable. Of course, study :) But I'm sure you can ace the exam!

or is it better idea directly appling for CA instead of applying for ASCPi?

The exam was really hard in the beginning, but once i got used to the questions, it was pretty much downhill. I used the LSU, A bottom line approach and the Valerie Dietz Polandsky review cards, and trust me, that should do it, too much review from different review books will just confuse you.. The questions are not based on memorization, you have to memorize the concepts and apply them.

I have the Polandsky cards and the Ciulla and ASCP book but it's been a LONG time since I was in school (1991)and all this info just seems so mind boggling!!! I have until Dec 20th to take the exam and am going to try and study some each day and focus more on the Polandsky cards as sometimes Q&A confuses me. Thanks for replying and again congrats on a job well done!!!!

L. Tech in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina said: Congrats!!! I just got my eligibility letter and will be taking it soon. What did you use to study and how was the exam?

Hi, I just passed the exam last Saturday, about 2 weeks after my training program ended. I took 4 days off for Labor Day and did absolutely no studying, then I studied for 10 days using BOR 5th ed. and the Polansky flash cards. I agree with cls12, the exam was difficult in the very beginning, to me not because the actual questions were difficult, but because of the type of questions, and how they are phrased. Once I got used to the that, it was ok. The questions are not straightforward; most of them are troubleshooting questions. They require critical thinking. The few straightforward questions I got asked were about obscure things.
The 10 days of studying did not help me in the exam. There were 10 of us in our class, and we all passed, and we also all agreed that we could have taken the exam right after our program ended (with no additional studying) and still passed. We all "overstudied." To me the biggest factor was the quality of our training program, because it was very rigorous and prepared us well. We had a 215 question comp final (used Harr and CLS Review A Bottom Line Approach) that is meant to prepare us for the ASCP. We got tests and practicals almost weekly in our rotations as well as testing in lectures. You remember more than you think you will. Our program average score is in 600-700 range, with some students in the 800 range. The quality of the training program, and prior clincal lab experience, is so important.
The MPS is so low (400) that mostly everyone will pass, with the average being in the 400-500 range. Usually the only people that fail are ESL people, because they have a hard time understanding what the questions are asking. So don't stress. Almost everyone panics beforehand but ends up passing. If you have a solid background, you will do fine.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the BOR 5th edition is useless. There are tons of mistakes in it, alot in the UA/BF and Immuno sections in particular. #304 in the Hemo section there is supposed to be a picture of a platelet aggregation curve and it isn't even there. Alot of the explanations aren't very thorough either. The Polansky flash cards and Harr are probably better investments of your time.

I didn't take a review class...I took the exam almost right after my training. So you are saying you graduated from your training program 13 years ago? I think it will be alot tougher to pass the exam that way. So I agree a review class might help you, but I don't know of any. Have you been working in a medical lab during the 13 year gap? That might help. Please don't give up :)

Listen, $hitrasharma, you need to calm down and stop using the Caps Lock key. If you had bothered to read my post you would know that I went through a training program and did not need some overpriced review class. If all you have been doing the last 10 years is working in hemo in India you are most likely going to need more than just a review class.

Thank you for your post. Did you take any questions about Molecular Diagnostics and Laboratory regulations/management? Did you try any online exerise text before the real one?
Would you mind tell me where did you take your training program? I just know that SJSU has one.

Yes I totally forgot, ASCP has practice tests you can buy. I did them to see how much studying I needed to do before the exam. I also did some mock exams using the CD-ROM that comes with the Harr book. The real exam doesn't have much molecular on it...I didn't get any molecular questions and at the most if you get any it will be 1 or 2 I think, its not a huge part of the exam. I only got 1 management type question and it was really easy.
San Jose State has a large CLS trainee program, they have lots of affiliate hospitals. I heard the interview is really bad, 20 people in a room staring at you. It might be easier to get into their program vs. others, their minimum GPA is on the lower side, 2.5 I think. I know someone with a pretty low GPA who got in last year lol

Just took the test yesterday, and passed.

I studied with these books:
1. Clinical Laboratory Science Review: A Bottom Line Approach, 3rd ed.
2. Clinical Laboratory Science Review (Harr, Clinical Laboratory Science Review), 3rd ed.
3. and the BOR review book, 4th ed.

I studied the "bottom line book" cover to cover, taking breaks to test my knowledge with the BOR review book, taking notes, and discussing some concepts with classmates. I took into consideration the overall exam percentage of the sections that I covered. Hemo, Chem, Micro, Blood Bank are the big 4.

When I got home, I'd practice taking the test with the CD that came with the Robert Harr book.

The questions on the exam were a lot like the questions in the BOR book, but mostly without "keyword" clues in the questions, and with much more obscure information. Out of 100, I only really knew 5-6 questions. It's a challenging test.

Good luck to you all.
