Ranjita in San Jose, California said: hey freinds, how r u? Hi Ranjita, Sorry to tell you but you are still not eligible to take ASCPi because of your lack of experience. You need at least 5 yrs, which has to be in all aspects of lab not only Micro. I suggest you take an MLT program (2 yrs) and pass this exam and work 2-3 yrs as MLT then challenge the MLS exam. This will be a tough route to take but this is the only option you have. You can take AMT MT exam but it will be useless because many employers do not recognize this (sorry for those AMT cert including myself but I have both ASCP and AMT cert.) Hope this info help you a bit. There are few agencies that you can obtain MT cert. (AAB, AMT, HEW etc...)Only ASCP is probably well known on all of these certification agencies. Good luck! |

Toulip in Dobbs Ferry, New York said: Hello everyone!I have some serious questions! If somebody wants to apply for the NY licensure does he have to give the MLS/ASCP exam only or he can also choose the ASCP technologist certification in microbiology or hematology for example? Moreover, does the NYSED accept the ASCPi certificate for the new york state licensure? Finally, what is the difference between the different kinds of ASCP technologist certification?I know that the educational requirements differ but if I am M(ASCP) certified or H(ASCP) certified and not MLS(ASCP) does this affect my career? Please HELP!!!Good luck with your exams! If you are H(ASCP), you can only work in that particular department Hematology or Coag, same for M(ASCP) but MLS(ASCP) basically allows you to work as a generalist (all depts w/no limitations). Not alot of hospitals hire M(ASCP) or H(ASCP) because they want someone that can do everything for the same price. Career wise, it would be a little hard to find job with that certification but Micro is becoming a hot career so that maybe something you should take advantage. I hope these info help you a bit with your concerns |

There is a NY state exam as well which is for people that have not gone through an NAACLS accredited program. I think that is what he/she was asking. I believe the exam is the same difficulty as the actual ASCP. |

Im planning to retake ASCP exam....I failed on the first time. Im just wondering, if the passing score is 400 out of 1000, is the passing score for a NY state licensure for ASCP much higher? Because when I got my score, its says 75 is the passing score and got some grades above 75 but some are lower than 75 especially my Laboratory operations. is it still equal for 400 score to pass? thanks |

I took my exam today at 10:30am and I passed!!!!! I've been looking at this board for most of this year and what everyone has said about the exam is true. The test is more analytical than anything. When I got halfway done I thought I was going to fail. My test seemed like it was mostly Micro and Blood bank which I'm glad cause those are my favorite subjects. I graduated from my program in december, but I didn't take the test till now. I didn't really study, only the last two weeks. I used the patsy jarreau book only. You just have to have a good understanding of the subject matter to answer the question. On most questions I was able to eliminate two wrong answers. I got questions on parasites, mycology, micro (slant reactions with a pic), No panels but lots of blood bank questions that were on HDN, reverse type/forward type (one involved a subgroup of A), I got lots of positive DAT scenarios, for chemistry there was lots of questions on bilirubin (pre-hepatic, post-hepatic, cirrhosis....etc...). There was like one lab operations, and at the end of the exam I got like 2 immunology questions. In hemo I got some really crappy blurry pics (identifying RBC inclusions, WBC inclusions, identifying blasts, metamyelocytes) They asked questions about the stains like PAS, peroxidase, non specific/specific esterase. I felt that I overdid it with the studying and I was freaking out for nor reason.

Hello everyone! I have been reading posts on here without posting myself. I wanted to thank everyone for their contributions to me passing the MLS ASCP today. I was a bit worried about passing because I knew the test would be hard and I only studied for 8 days. I know thats not a long time in days but I did put over 5 hrs each day into it. I had to hurry and take it for a commissioning package so it was do or die. I have been out of school for about 3 years and I was literally starting from scratch in some areas. Study hard, pray harder and it will work out! I used the polansky cards, old school notes, the NCA answer and review book and thats it. I am grateful! |

Just analyze each question thoroughly and then rule out. |

what is the passing score? Is the same score in LabCE? |
|
MLS in Seattle, Washington 4 months ago |
vmCLS in San Jose, California said: what is the passing score? Is the same score in LabCE? Labce grading is the traditional method which means if you don't answer it correct, then you won't get any points at all. In ASCP grading, your grade is primarily based on which answer you pick. For instance, What is 2+2 = ? a. 6, b. 7, c. 4, d. 3.8 Obviusly A and B can be ruled out easily, correct! but if you pick A or B then you won't get any points at all but if you pick C, you will get the whole credits (assuming 10 points) but if you pick D, you will still get points (probably 2 points at least). Does this make any sense at all?
ASCP exam is not as hard as you think. If you can rule out at least 2 possible answers then you have a chance of passing this exam. Most of the time you will feel that your failing the exam due to the difficulty of each question but don't be afraid because you are actually passing the exam unless you really don't know how to rule out then that's totally different story. Most questions you would get around this month is probably more on Micro, Immunology/Serology and Blood Bank. If you can master these sections, then you are ready to go. also, if you are going to schedule, your date make sure you are really ready. For instance, you've been studying for almost 1 mos using LabCe then your practice exam is somewhere around 80% above then you can go ahead and schedule your exam in 2 days but no later than 2 days and don't study too much. Just study at least for 1 mos max. 2 weeks would be ideal if you are going to spend 5-7 hours practicing the labce exams. Hope these info help you a bit. |

My only concern, how do you know that they will focus more on Immunology, micro and Blood bank for this month? I really appreciate your help. |

allen las vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada said: heyyyyyy guys i do have bachelor degree in chemistry 124 cridet 4 years do i have to take cls program to be set as ASCP exam for MLS ? PLEASE HELP Yes you still have to take the CLS program and pass the MLS ASCP exam. If you do have some laboratory experience, you are also qualified to take C(ASCP) exam but you can only work on Chem dept but it will be a tough way to find a job because hospital labs mostly hire generalist in exception to M(ASCP). Another way for you to become MLS would be take a 2 yr MLT program then pass the MLT ASCP exam work for 2 or 3 yrs then challenge the MLS ASCP exam. You got your degree here in U.S right. If you received your degree outside the country, then it would be a totally different rules and criteria. Hope these info help you out. Good luck! |

Also how you know that they (ASCP) will focus on Micro/immunology for this Month? Should i focus more on these subjects? Yes, it is possible to have 2-3 possible answers but the points vary to one another. Points are also based on the difficulty of the question. It doesn't matter how many right answers you got but if those questions were fairly easy you won't accumulate 400 points. If you have more difficult questions, this simply means your on the right track. The question gets harder and harder if you keep answering the question correctly but if you don't then the difficulty level decreases.
= Study for 2 weeks straight using labce under review mode not test mode. = It is important for you to pick the review mode and never the test mode otherwise you are wasting your time. If you feel that you want section by section you can do so but it will take you longer to connect concepts if you know what i'm taking about.
Hope this help you my friend in your upcoming big day. |

Jen32 in Arlington, Texas said: I wasn't aware that you got ANY points for answering incorrectly. Yes, you do get points for picking the least likely answer but this does not apply to all the question especially for easy level question. Your goal is to obtain 400 points as much as possible which is why ruling as least 2 least likely answers can help you pass the exam. So, I suggest that take 2-3 minutes analyzing each question especially the wordings they used because this can give you clues and can help you rule out for most of the part. |

I really appreciate your help. I know why they put more Blood bank, Immunology/Serology, and Micro because of the statistics. You probably studied statistics before correct then you know what i'm talking about. You will get 1 or 2 (max) lab management question(s), For Chem and Heme questions: mostly what next step or action would you do.....case to case basis. If you work as generalist, you don't need to study much for CHEM or HEME or COAG but if you don't have any exp. at all then i would suggest you do the labce section by section and spend 1 wk on each section to pass the ASCP exam. For micro, pay attention also to processing part, diff stain methods....Acid fast stain methods...etc... If you are afraid of taking ASCP exam, and willing to spend $130 to give you confident then I would suggeset you taking an MT AMT exam. Although AMT certification is not fully recognize by many employers out there, it is also nice to understand how other certification agency works. AMT MT exam has 210 questions for 3 hr. Questions are too easy if you have an experience as a generalist but it can be tough if you don't have any experience at all. It is also easy to rule out and this will help you improve "ruling out". Once you get certified on this, you have to pay $90 every yr to maintain your certification on top of that you need to do CE points to maintain your certification every 3 yr like ASCP CMP. ASCP you don't need to be a member but you must earn 36 points to maintain your certification and additional 36 points if you other certification within ASCP. I am both AMT and ASCP certified. |

I have been looking at this blog for awhile now, I found it very helpful with everyones honest input. MLS in Seatle has the best explanation on the test. After taking the exam this past Saturday, I felt with every answer that I was failing. But it must be that each answer is actually weighted, because I do not know how else I would of passed. I used the Labce, Polansky Cards, Harr book, and the green BOR book. I over studied - stressed out. It is true, if you know the basics, and use the rule out method, you will be fine, and don't stress over it! - It seemed I had ALOT of Micro and ALOT of Quality Control, I feel Micro is my weakest, because where I work,we do not do alot of Micro at all. Somehow I made it through, so let me just say if I can do it ANYONE can!!! Thanks to all, and Good Luck to you who are going to be taking the exam soon, please do not stress, (I know easier said than done) If you are thinking about taking it - JUST DO IT!!!

swisa in Newburgh, Indiana said: The amount of time you need to put into it depends on how much you remember from school and how well you can apply it. I studied for a week around 6 hours a day. I took and passed my program final. Then took 3 days off and studied all over again for 3 days for around 6 hours a day to review everything. I passed with a 598. Personally, I think studying more than 6 hours a day is too much. I took the registry 1 week out of school with minimal studying after graduating. I can email anybody who wants them some study guides. They were given to the students in my class by my instructor to study from for our program final. They were enough to prepare me for my program final and registry test. E-mail me if you would like me to send them to you. caferguson4@usieagles.org. That week after school I studied my study guides and played the free practice quiz from labce.com. The labce quiz will help you practice thinking critically about the question. The questions are easier from labce, but it'll help. For example questions from my registry exam, look above. Those would be considered some of the harder questions. The main thing is not to study so much and end up forgetting everything you study. You'll already be pretty freaked out once you sit there ready to take the test. Study as well as you can. Relax! If you end up failing the first time, schedule yourself more time to study before you take it again. Can you send me your study guides?thanks. My email is fxo_salem@yahoo.com |

I am still confused, SORRY! I contacted the NYSED and they said to fill out form one and get school to fill out form two! from then they allow if I can take there state exam and then once passed then I get a license. Are you saying that the majority of hospital labs in NY will require ASCP and NY license, but I need five years US domestic experience to qualify for this! So do you think if I applied for the NY license and came to states with the appropriate work visa (which is no major issue from Ireland) I could secure work in NY or would it be a waste with no ASCP! thank you again its very daunting process and I would much prefer to have everything as much organized from this side of things as possible. |

The hospitals where Ive got an interview that require ASCP and NY license is Westchester Medical Center, Mt Sinai Hosp, Albany Medical Center, hospitals in Poughkeepsie area, Hudson, Dutchess county NY area...they all require ASCP and NY license if your applying to other hospital, that Im not sure about their requirement but mostly u can see their requirement is ASCP. MLS in Seattle, Washington said: Great analysis! You hit the nail on head with your approach to studying with LabCE: the key is to use it as a resource for UNDERSTANDING the material. That means that whether you get the question wrong or right, know WHY you got it wrong/right. Understand the rationale behind the correct answer, that's why review mode is the only way to go. When you're in the 75-85 percent range (understanding the questions, not just memorizing the ones you may have already seen) then you're ready for ASCP. |
