Thanks. It just seems like a hugh task. THings like Micro- organizims have didferent names and everything.LOL

lol .. yea im not such a big fan of microbiology either.. mae it easier on yourself by creating a chart for the tests to id the organism and know the key facts to what it can cause and appearance... hmm.. some people say nca is less difficult.. do look into that aswell..

Anu the NCA might be harder than the ASCP. 180-200 questions in two hours. They are recalculating the score, so you will not get a immediate score, they will give you the score after a couple of months with the new calculated passing score.

You can take the C ASCP that is not the specialist exam that is just a technologist in chemistry exam. The ASCP sc is the specialist in chemistry exam. Remember you only have 5 times to pass it through route 1 (naacles acred program)

Hello Jennifer, I am 43 years old and graduated in CLS in 1999. I have yet to get my
ASCP certification for Medical Technology. I did take my MLT ASCP in 1991 and passed.
I have been out of the field for a while and am discouraged by what I have been reading.
I am scheduled this testing peroid, but have yet to choose a specific date. I have until
July, but am extremely anxious. I have been studying from the cards, A Concise Review of
CLS, and the Harr book. I fear it may not be enough. Any advice for this old person who
graduated almost 10 years ago? Do you really think it is impossible???

Not impossible, I did it in one year as a 47 year old, now the problem is finding a job, the market is real tight here in Wichita, for both clinics and Hospitals, stay in there, I plan to volunteer in a lab until an opening comes up, the instrumentation has changed, much robotics, and automated processing in chem, blood bank has moved forward with Echo and Galileo systems, but the basics are the same, just takes a bit of time to learn the machines, in my experience, the fewer the FTE's, the better the labs like it. The exam wasn't that bad, get a friend to quiz you...good luck

The MT ASCP exam is hard to pass once you have graduated for a while, they key is to take the exam right after you graduate.

I don't recommend you take the new combined exam once ASCp and NCa merge in a couple of months. Noone will know how hard that test will be.

I've taken both the NCA and the ASCP exams and passed both...looking back, I'd say the NCA exam was a LOT easier than the ASCP exam...and contrary to what someone else on the forum stated, you do get instant results for both exams. You can find out immediately at the end of both exams whether or not you passed. The NCA exam also gives you a score and tells you how many questions you got correct in each section even when you've passed. I took the NCA exam after I'd already passed the ASCP exam because I had already paid for both exams ahead of time and thought oh what the heck I might as well go ahead and do the exam since I paid for it. I didnt even read for the NCA and just relied on what reading I had done for the ASCP exam and even so I passed the exam and got a really high score. The questions on the NCA were less analytical than the ASCP, more or less factual rather than investigative. If you take a look at the NCA review book by Susan Becks and try to answer the questions in the book you'll get a good feel for what the NCA exam is like...if you dont find the questions in the book too hard, chances are you'll be just fine on the exam.

Oh, and I also think ASCP allows you the option of taking only certain sections ie only chemistry if you choose to do so. I remember someone at my work place mentioning that they took only the microbiology section of the exam. So do look into that option.

Good luck!

hi,SD. Thank you for shareing the experence you have.
Where could I choose for only one part at real exam? At the first screen of the exam or the computer automatically to choose for you? I remember someone in this forum mentiones that she/he had not choose the option before she/he take the exam, however, the system gave her/him almost one part(ie.chemistry)in the exam.

It needs to be stated in this thread that it is possible to easily pass the ASCP exam even if you dont take it immediately after your clinicals. I took it almost a year after and did not come even close to failing. Some in this thread make it seem like you HAVE to take it RIGHT after your clinicals and if you dont it will be impossible to pass later. Sure it may be best to take it soon after but dont make it sound so impossible to pass if you dont.
The ONLY thing I studied was the purple and yellow "Bottom Line Approach" book. The one with the cartoons. And i mean I studied the hell out of that book. I studied casually for about a month for 2 hours every night in front of the TV. Then I buckled down and studied hard in my office for two hours every night for another month.

ASCP exam was fairly okay and i could compare it with AMT. The difference was that AMT gave all general questions and not much of lab correlations, as compared to ASCP. I had 5 cell panel tests (basics..), 2 mixing studies and microscopic pics like for the IFE of ANA Abs and it wants you to identify if what kind of Ab it is and in which autoimmune disease it is seen, then they also had me identify an M6 (Di guglielmo Syndrome). Another was a graph for HAV and it want you to identify each curves that was labelled. For chemistry and Clinical microscopy, they were all correlations. Blood Banking- master the basics in transfusion, crossmatching, bloodtyping as well as the ABO discrepancies because the questions are situational. As for Micro, I had pics of TSI rxns, so know all the basiccharacteristics of Enterobacteriaciae. and what disease will they fit in.

Hi..I'm taking the technologist exam in Micro (ascp) not the MLT..look on ascp web site and you'll see the different areas and the routes you need to be eligible. for any technologist exam you need a Bachelor's degree but there are different routes to get to be elible.

Phan in Richmond, Virginia said: HI everyone, I'm preparing to retake the ASCP MT exam for the 3rd time in three weeks and I am freaking out. Sigh' My first time I was very weak at Chemistry and they asked me almost all Chem questions. The second time I actually studied a lot in Chem but it doesn't seem to have a lot of Chem Qs but instead, it has a lot of Blood Bank Qs. OmG, I dont know what to study anymore! Dont get me wrong, I did study all of the other subject too. And then I decided to take the NCA to see if its easier, it has 180 questions to take within 3 hrs. Thats too many questions too little time for me! On top of that, they didn't even give me my score, just told me to wait a couple of WEEKS for my results because they are trying to recalculate the passing scores. O.M.G, I have to worse luck ever!

I just left the testing center for the SECOND time and failed AGAIN! This test is in no way predictable, people say study this, study that and the simple truth is that you must know everything. I have been working in a lab for three years and they had some lab tests on some of their questions I have never even heard of. There were also no antibody panels to speak of on either test. None. And that green book, and their practice exams mean nothing. So, it was usless for me to even pour over the study material for that. The actual test is nothing like those practice tests or books they sell. And the pictures they have on that test are ridiculous. I could take a better picture of a slide. I am serious, those are the worst photos of cells I have ever encountered. I am actually suprised that a company like ASCP can even put such crappy pictures on a test. I really find it funny that we are asked to answer these questions, when NO ONE will ever ask us these in our actual jobs. I love it when they say, "Patient presented with a fever, etc..." Yeah, like lab techs will EVER be told this information, or ever asked how to interpret results! The thought is laughable.

The best time to take the ASCP is right after you graduate. Stats indicate a higher pass rate taking the test after you graduate from a NAACLS acred program. People who try to take it years after graduation or trying to bridge from a mlt to my will have a difficult time passing. Then they take a easy test like the AMT and say it is equivilant when some states do not even recognize that cert.
